Abstract

The ultimate goal of the cone method of colostomy irrigation is to return patients with colostomies to their former role in society with confidence in themselves to the extent that having a colostomy is not considered a handicap. The results have generally been excellent. We believe all patients with stomas should be afforded the opportunity to attempt colostomy irrigation.

Elective colostomy in the patient with a spinal cord injury: an ET nurse's perspective.

The patient with a spinal cord injury presents significant challenges to the nurse seeking to promote an optimal state of physical wellness and maximum independence with self-care. This article describes the nature of spinal cord injuries and their long-term effects on the gastrointestinal system. The preoperative and postoperative needs that the WOC nurse must consider when designing a care plan for the patient with a spinal cord injury and a colostomy are discussed, as well as the indications and efficacy of elective colostomy surgery as a management alternative for the neuropathic bowel.

New technique for mesh repair of paracolostomy hernias.

Paracolostomy hernias are common and require treatment when symptomatic. Traditional methods of repair have high recurrence rates. We describe a new technique using polytetrafluoroethylene mesh, which offers preservation of stoma site, lack of recurrences, ease, and safety.
