Abstract

According to the author's opinion aesthetics in nursing is interaction with people and environment. Balance between respect of a human being and presence of the form, colour, rhythm and peace of environment is related to it. The aim of aesthetics is to bring pleasure, joy, comfort, hope and beauty and in addition to all this, to strengthen self-experience of a human being. Aesthetic atmosphere at its best can encourage a human being to use images which is psychic activity that gives deeper understanding concerning her events of life and their personal meaning. Aesthetics can promote health of a human being and improve the quality of life--when one thinks of patients and personnel.

Technical tricks to improve the cosmetic results of breast-conserving treatment.

The paper describes different manoeuvres and surgical details that may help the general surgeon to improve the aesthetic outcomes after breast-conserving treatment for cancer. Among them, the pre-operative planning, the position of the patient in the operative room, the mobilisation of the glandular tissue when the tumour has been removed. All these manoeuvres contribute to achieving better symmetry with the healthy breast and to improve the final aesthetic result, minimising the surgical conflict between large resections and defects for optimal control of local disease and the consequent breast deformities.

Reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex: an update.

Along with continuing progress in reconstructive surgery of the breast numerous techniques of nipple-areola reconstruction have been developed. With time and experience some methods have been discredited to historical significance only while others have evolved to widely accepted concepts used by surgeons all over the world, which in turn contributed new ideas and modifications. In addition to those favourite techniques others are reserved as second-line alternatives in specific situations. The principle criterion for a pleasing nipple-areola complex is symmetry regarding several parameters: colour, texture, size, and projection. The purpose of this manuscript is to review and discuss the concepts and techniques of nipple-areola reconstruction that have evolved over the past decades. Furthermore, those principles and techniques are pointed out that fulfil best the criteria of an ideal nipple-areola complex with emphasis on different techniques of breast reconstruction and individual conditions of the patient.
