Changing Faces: Taking up Macgregor's challenge.

Abstract

I had the good fortune to initially present the thoughts written here at the Psychosocial Interest Group of the American Burn Association Annual Meeting in New York City in 1997. The paper begins with a personal introduction and proceeds to describe how Frances Cooke Macgregor's work inspired my colleagues and myself to develop a series of programs to address the rehabilitation challenges inherent in living with any kind of facial disfigurement. It is our sincere hope that the programs developed by our organization, Changing Faces (based in the United Kingdom) will contribute to the rehabilitation of people living with disfigurement throughout the world. We especially look forward to learning how what we have learned can be adapted to and disseminated in the United States as we establish collaborative relationships with the dedicated group of burn professionals there.

Individual response profiles of male Wistar rats in animal models for anxiety and depression.

Previous work has shown that systematic individual differences between male Wistar rats can be detected in tasks like the elevated plus-maze, or the open field. Here, we investigated whether individual profiles of anxiety, as measured with the plus-maze, may predict behavioral response profiles in other tasks where anxiety, aversion, or depressive behaviors are important. Male Wistar rats were initially screened: (A) in an open field; and (B) in an elevated plus-maze. Based on their plus-maze behavior, that is, the time spent in the open arms, the animals were divided into two subgroups with either 'low' or 'high' anxiety (LA or HA) levels. These subgroups were exposed to other experimental anxiety paradigms, namely object burying and two-way active avoidance, and an animal model of depression, the forced swim test. In the plus-maze, the percentage of time spent on, and the number of entries into the open arms were lower in HA than in LA rats. In the object burying task, HA rats showed more burying behavior of Tabasco-coated marbles, and in the active avoidance task, they showed slower acquisition of avoidance learning and higher escape latency as compared to LA rats. Finally, LA and HA rats behaved similarly in the forced swim test; however, the percentage changes of immobility time between test days 1 and 2 were negatively correlated to open field behavior, namely locomotor activity and center entries. On the other hand, the frequencies of rearing in the open field, which can also gauge functional differences between rats (for example responsiveness to novelty, psychomotor activation), were not substantially related to the behavioral profiles in the tests of anxiety and depression. These results show that individual differences of anxiety in the plus-maze can be predictive of behavior in other anxiety models, but not in forced swim test, indicating that they may be determined partly by similar functional and physiological mechanisms.

The positive effects of postnatal handling on defensive burying are more obvious in a situation that enlarges the potential coping responses.

A recent study reported few effects of postnatal handling in the defensive burying test. Since the importance of testing conditions has been emphasised in this paradigm, the lack of handling effects in this test could be attributed to the testing situation. Our experiment was carried out to test whether postnatal handling in DA/HAN strain rats have positive effects in two situations of the defensive burying test: a no-hide situation, in which avoidance of the probe was not possible, and a hide situation, in which animals were allowed to avoid the probe by sheltering in a hiding compartment. Our results showed no difference between control and handled rats defensive reactions in the no-hide situation. However, the general coping style of handled rats was different, mostly by a higher level of exploration of the apparatus and of the probe. In the hide situation, the time spent burying the probe was significantly lower in handled rats and they also spent less time in the hiding compartment. Those results, along with approach/avoidance behaviours directed towards the probe demonstrate that postnatal handling do have some positive effects in the defensive burying test. In addition, our results also point out that testing situations in which complex coping strategies are available are appropriate to test the effects of early stimulation such as handling.

Six-year follow-up of preventive interventions for children of divorce: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Compared with their peers with nondivorced parents, adolescents with divorced parents are more likely to have mental health problems, drop out of school, and become pregnant. The long-term effects of intervention programs for this population are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of 2 programs designed to prevent mental health problems in children with divorced parents. DESIGN AND SETTING: Six-year follow-up of a randomized controlled trial of 2 intervention programs (mother program: 11 group and 2 individual sessions; mother plus child program: mother program and 11 group sessions for children) and a control condition (books on postdivorce adjustment), which was conducted in a large metropolitan US city from April 1998 through March 2000. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 218 families (91% of the original sample) with adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years were reinterviewed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Externalizing and internalizing problems, diagnosed mental disorders, drug and alcohol use, and number of sexual partners. RESULTS: Eleven percent of adolescents in the mother plus child program (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.8%-18.2%) had a 1-year prevalence of diagnosed mental disorder compared with 23.5% (95% CI, 13.8%-33.2%) of adolescents in the control program (P =.007). Adolescents in the mother plus child program had fewer sexual partners (mean [SE], 0.68 [0.16]) compared with adolescents in the control program (1.65 [0.37]; P =.01). Adolescents with higher initial mental health problems whose families were in the mother plus child program had lower externalizing problems (P =.007) and fewer symptoms of mental disorder (P =.02) compared with those in the control program. Compared with controls, adolescents whose mothers participated in the mother program and who had higher initial mental health problems had lower levels of externalizing problems (P<.001); fewer symptoms of mental disorder (P =.005); and less alcohol (P =.005), marijuana (P =.02), and other drug use (P =.01). CONCLUSIONS: In adolescents of divorced parents, the mother program and the mother plus child program reduced symptoms of mental disorder; rates of diagnoses of mental disorder; levels of externalizing problems; marijuana, alcohol, and other drug use; and number of sexual partners.
