Magnetic fields on British trains.

Abstract

People on trains can be exposed to static and alternating magnetic fields which are higher than background levels in most homes and many workplaces. Quantification of such exposure may be of interest for epidemiological purposes but it is also important to ensure that exposure guidelines are complied with. This article describes the types of electric trains and trams in use in the UK and the results of measurements of static and alternating magnetic flux density. Many of the data have been supplied by the operators of the systems described. The measurements summarised in this article are indicative of the magnitudes of magnetic field exposures to be encountered on British trains, but without concomitant frequency information, they are not sufficient to allow demonstration of compliance with exposure standards.

Long-lived charge-separated states in bacterial reaction centers isolated from Rhodobacter sphaeroides.

We studied the accumulation of long-lived charge-separated states in reaction centers isolated from Rhodobacter sphaeroides, using continuous illumination, or trains of single-turnover flashes. We found that under both conditions a long-lived state was produced with a quantum yield of about 1%. This long-lived species resembles the normal P(+)Q(-) state in all respects, but has a lifetime of several minutes. Under continuous illumination the long-lived state can be accumulated, leading to close to full conversion of the reaction centers into this state. The lifetime of this accumulated state varies from a few minutes up to more than 20 min, and depends on the illumination history. Surprisingly, the lifetime and quantum yield do not depend on the presence of the secondary quinone, Q(B). Under oxygen-free conditions the accumulation was reversible, no changes in the normal recombination times were observed due to the intense illumination. The long-lived state is responsible for most of the dark adaptation and hysteresis effects observed in room temperature experiments. A simple method for quinone extraction and reconstitution was developed.

ELF magnetic fields in a city environment.

Some epidemiological studies indicate an association between extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) exposure and cancer risks. These studies have mainly taken residential and occupational exposure into consideration. Outdoor environments are often considered as low level areas, but in this paper we show that this is not true in a city environment. We have mapped the ELF magnetic flux densities along certain stretches of sidewalk in central Göteborg City, Sweden. About 50% of the investigated street length shows flux densities of the same order of magnitude (0.2 microT and above) as those associated with increased risks of cancer in epidemiological studies. We conclude that the outdoor exposures in a city environment also should be considered in exposure assessments and risk evaluations. These elevated flux densities are probably due to stray currents. We also found strong magnetic flux densities (> 1.0 microT) close to ordinary distribution pillars, power substations, shoplifting alarms, and other electrical devices.

Operating principle of an electron monochromator in an axial magnetic field.

Electron monochromators which are operated within an axial magnetic (guiding) field are especially suitable for the production of monochromatic electrons at low energies. Although in principle the technology of such devices has an appreciable historic background, we have discovered experimentally important new features, which cannot be understood using the previously published theories of operation. An in-depth study of the electron trajectories in a crossed electric and magnetic field using Simion1 showed a number of possible pitfalls, which have to be avoided in construction and operation. From our simulations we derived a novel design and operational method, which is currently under evaluation. We have already demonstrated that using this novel design an electron energy resolution of about 50 meV is realistic.
