Abstract

At this time innovation in general practice service delivery is being extensively explored and critically examined as a means of improving efficiency. It is important that general practitioners are actively involved in the debate and utilise techniques that allow detailed, logical and robust judgments to be formulated. Economic analysis is one important tool that can contribute to these judgments. The aim of this article is to provide a brief overview of the concepts and methods used.

Personal Dental Services--a practitioner's point of view.

NHS dentistry has seen many changes recently. The latest has been the introduction of Personal Dental Services. This article describes the experiences of two general dental practitioners in their practice who entered as a first wave pilot. The article explains the steps involved in generating a proposal and preparing a practice to run as a pilot. The authors have highlighted areas of particular concern for others to consider before embarking on a similar journey.

[Costs of a low payment maintenance treatment with methadone].

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the cost of methadone maintenance treatments in opioid-dependent individuals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Calculation of cost was achieved by applying an activity-based costing and management method from Conselleria de Sanitat of Catalonia, Spain (1997). RESULTS: The cost of each methadone dose was 76 ptas. First medical visits cost 4,517 ptas. Urine tests cost 760 ptas. Transportation amounted to 18,895 ptas. CONCLUSION: Such a costing method is applicable and reveals the low cost of this methadone maintenance treatment in opioid-dependent subjects.
