Predictably restoring endodontically treated teeth.

Abstract

Endodontically treated teeth can be restored with a wide range of techniques of varying complexity. This paper presents a straightforward technique for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth that meet certain standards. Criteria are provided for the utilization of crowns, composite resins, cast gold post cores, amalgam or composite build-ups, and passive, parallel, small diameter stainless steel posts to restore these teeth. Consideration is given to ferrule design and its importance in achieving success.

Modeling of viscoelastic behavior of dental chemically activated resin composites during curing.

Shrinkage stresses generated in dental resin composites during curing are among the major problems in adhesive dentistry, because they interfere with the integrity of the restored tooth. The aim of this study was to find a mechanical model to describe the viscoelastic behavior of a two-paste resin composite during curing, to aid our understanding of the process of shrinkage stress development. In this study, stress-strain data on Clearfil F2 during curing were obtained by a dynamic test method and analyzed using three mechanical models (Maxwell, Kelvin, and the Standard Linear Solid model). With a modeling procedure, the model's stress response was compared with the experimental stress data, and the material parameters were calculated. On the basis of the modeling and evaluation results, a model for describing the viscoelastic behavior of the shrinking resin composite was selected. The validation results showed that the modeling procedure is free of error, and that it was capable of finding material parameters associated with a two-parametric model with a high degree of accuracy. The viscoelastic behavior of the shrinking resin composite, as excited by the conditions of the test method, cannot be described by a single mechanical model. In the early stage of curing, the most accurate prediction was achieved by the Maxwell model, while during the remainder of the curing process the Kelvin model can be used to describe the viscoelastic behavior of the two-paste resin composite.

The relationship between leachability of polymerization initiator and degree of conversion of visible light-cured resin.

Recently, polymerization-initiator-induced radicals have been identified as a biohazard as well as residual monomers. The present investigation was conducted to clarify the leaching behavior of the polymerization initiator and to measure the relationship between the leached amount of polymerization initiator and the degree of conversion of visible light (VL)-cured resin. Moreover, determining a suitable ratio of polymerization initiator to the base monomer according to the above relationship was carried out. The base monomer (UDMA/TEGDMA) was activated with varying concentrations of polymerization initiator (CQ/DMPT, CQ/DMAEMA) from 0.3-0.9 wt%, respectively, which were exposed to light for 40 s. Gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GCMS) was carried out to evaluate the leached amount of polymerization initiator. The degree of conversion (DC) of the cured sample was estimated using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. As the result, it was recognized that the leachability of the polymerization initiator (CQ, DMPT, and DMAEMA) depended on the degree of conversion of the VL-cured resin. Therefore, the optimal concentration of polymerization initiator can be determined from the relation between the degree of conversion and the leached amount of polymerization initiator, which is about 0.6 wt% for CQ/DMPT (1:1 in weight) and 0.5 wt% for CQ/DMAEMA (1:1 in weight) relative to the UDMA/TEGDMA (1:1 in weight) monomer.

A preliminary comparison of the mechanical properties of chemically cured and ultrasonically cured glass ionomer cements, using nano-indentation techniques.

There is a requirement for a dental cement with properties comparable or superior to conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs) but with the command set properties of the resin-modified GICs. The objective of this work was to show that the application of ultrasound to conventional Fuji IX commercial glass ionomer cement imparts a command set, whilst improving the short-term surface mechanical properties. Nano-indentation techniques were employed to highlight the improvements in hardness and creep resistance imparted to the cement through the application of ultrasound. The instant set imparted by the application of ultrasound provides improved surface hardness and creep, particularly within the first 24 h after setting. The surface hardness of the chemically cured Fuji IX (176 M Pa) increased by an order of magnitude when set ultrasonically (2620 M Pa), whilst creep reduced to a negligible amount. Rapid setting allows for shorter chair time and an improved clinical technique, making restorations more convenient for both the patient and clinician.
