Two cases of olfactory groove meningiomas are presented in patients with breast cancer. Predominance of breast cancer and meningiomas in the age decades of the forties and the fifties, presence of steroid hormones receptors in both and prevalence of meningiomas in women are referred as significant correlations. Examination of the breast of women with meningiomas is recommended. Tomographic images are sometimes atypical, and a surgical intervention may be necessary.

Sonographic breast imaging has been useful in the differentiation of cystic from solid masses. It has also been helpful in the characterization of palpable breast masses in the absence of corresponding abnormalities. The authors undertook a prospective study that incorporated pulsed Doppler analysis into sonographic real-time imaging of solid breast masses. Thirty-eight patients were examined. In 12 of the patients there were positive Doppler signals, while in 26 patients there were no Doppler signals. The 12 patients showing positive Doppler signals proved to have infiltrating ductal carcinoma, while the 26 patients with negative Doppler signals proved to have benign breast disorders. Pulsed Doppler analysis as a supplement to sonographic real-time imaging shows promise for the identification of breast carcinoma.
The authors studied the results of sonography of the breast and zones of regional lymph drainage in 15,973 patients. In 154 of them puncture aspiration biopsy was conducted under ultrasonic control. Breast carcinoma was found in 23 patients, in 2 of them the tumor was not palpable. The examination was performed on the Aloka-SSD-630 apparatus. The sonographic picture was that of a structure with diminished echogenic properties, irregular notched contours, and non-uniform echo signals from the internal structures. Echography with puncture biopsy made it also possible to reveal the presence of nonpalpable axillary metastatic lymph nodes and to establish the precise differential diagnosis of benign and malignant intraductal tumors. The method of puncture aspiration biopsy under control of ultrasonic examination is highly effective in the differential diagnosis of breast carcinoma.
A comparative study of 71 patients with unilateral primary breast cancer was performed to verify a possible correlation between the mammographic findings of the cancer and the content of hormonal receptor. The Nielsen & Poulsen, and Wolfe classification were employed. Hormonal receptor content was determined using the Taylor method. The estrogen content was found to be high in type 1, intermediate in 2 and 4, and low in 3 and 5. Statistically significant difference in the estrogen receptor content was found between type 1 and others groups. Using the Wolfe classification, the hormonal content was found to be high in P1. Statistically significant difference was found between N1 and P2; N1 and DY. No relationship was found between histologic cancer type and hormonal receptor content. The Nielsen & Poulsen classification seems to be most simple and reproducible method respect of the Wolfe's parenchymal patterns. Mammographic findings could be used in selecting patients for endocrine therapy where no estrogen-receptor assay is available.
Forty four specimens from neoplastic, hyperplastic and normal human breast tissues were studied for localization of collagens and fibronectin. Affinity purified antihuman type I, III and IV collagens and antifibronectins were utilized by the indirect immunoperoxidase technique on fixed and paraffin-embedded sections. 86% of the cell cytoplasm of infiltrating ductal and 83% of the lobular cancers were positively stained for collagen type I and III. Collagen type IV, however, was detected in 100% of infiltrating ductal and 83% of lobular carcinomas. Focal cytoplasmic staining is a predominant feature for all antigens in the intraduct carcinoma while a diffuse pattern is encountered in the infiltrating types. Intact basement membranes in various lesions always stained for type IV collagen and showed variable staining for type III collagen and fibronectin. Epithelia of normal, benign, hyperplastic breast and most medullary carcinoma were negative for the three collagen types. Our results are in favour of the view that infiltrating breast carcinoma cells produce inappropriately the majority of collagens and inconsistently other proteins such as fibronectin.
Based on examinations of 133 females having the normal breast, benign and malignant tumors, the potentialities of color Doppler mapping of breast vessels are shown. Cancers showed an increased vascularity in the peritumor areas and high flow velocity (Vmax' Vmean) in the surrounding tumor vessels. These criteria are not related to the size of a malignant tumor.
