Vena contracta imaged by Doppler color flow mapping predicts the severity of eccentric mitral regurgitation better than color jet area: a chronic animal study.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate the relation between the color Doppler-imaged vena contracta and the severity of mitral regurgitation (MR) in a chronic animal model of MR. BACKGROUND: The vena contracta, which is defined as the smallest connection between the laminar flow acceleration zone and the turbulent regurgitant jet, has been reported to be a clinically useful marker for evaluating the severity of valvular regurgitation. METHODS: Six sheep with chronic MR produced by previous operation severing the chordae tendineae were examined. MR jet flows and vena contracta widths were imaged using a Vingmed 775 scanner with a 5-MHz transducer. Image data were directly transferred in digital format to a microcomputer for off-line measurement. MR was quantified as peak and mean regurgitant flow rates, regurgitant stroke volumes and regurgitant fractions determined using mitral and aortic electromagnetic flow probes and flowmeters balanced against each other. RESULTS: Vena contracta width correlated well with regurgitant severity determined by electromagnetic flowmeters (r = 0.95, SEE = 0.05 cm, p < 0.0001 for peak regurgitant flow rate; r = 0.85, SEE = 0.08 cm, p < 0.0001 for regurgitant stroke volume; r = 0.90, SEE = 0.07 cm, p < 0.0001 for regurgitant fraction). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the vena contracta width method is useful for predicting the severity of MR. It is simple and conveniently available with high resolution equipment. The quantitative comparisons in the present study lay the foundation for future clinical and research studies using this vena contracta technique.

Report on a group form for the measurement of color-word interference: speed of color discrimination test.

Although there have been some suggestions towards the development of a standardized form for a group version of Stroop's color-word interference test yet, to some extent, a group form has not been applied in psychological research. In this study the equivalence of group and individual procedures as well as some standards for psychological tests of the group form were examined. The results show that the interference score does not comply with the requirements of psychological tests and the equivalence of the interference scores of the group and individual procedures could not be determined. For further research experimental analysis of convergent and discriminant validity is suggested.

Reported head injury and sex differences in color naming, color matching, and digit-string matching.

It was hypothesized that the observed sex differences on three speeded tasks could be accounted for in terms of the greater incidence of head injury in men than in women. In two studies of 64 male and 66 female college students significant sex differences were found on digit-string matching and color-matching tasks. When the data from those 39 subjects with reported histories of head injury were eliminated from the analysis or head-injury reports were statistically controlled, significant sex differences remained. Digit-string matching times were significantly correlated with reported head injury in both studies, suggesting that this test is sensitive to residual effects of head injury.

Diagnosis of acute intestinal ischemia by color Doppler sonography. Color Doppler sonography and acute intestinal ischemia.

Detection of acute intestinal ischemia is a diagnostic challenge. Color Doppler sonography of the abdomen may contribute to its diagnosis by showing lesions of the gut wall associated with occlusion or stenosis of the mesenteric vessels. Our overview of the sonographic findings of acute intestinal ischemia is presented as well as a proposition of algorithm for the working up to the diagnosis based on recent clinical experience.

Applications of single-color and double-color oligonucleotide primed in situ labeling in cytology.

Interphase cytogenetics is mostly performed with use of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), using long DNA probes of several hundred or thousand base pairs in length. Recently, oligonucleotide primed in situ labeling (PRINS) was established for staining centromeres and telomeres of chromosomes in metaphase spreads by Taq-polymerase-mediated incorporation of labeled nucleotides. We investigated the use of PRINS in intact interphase cells of various cytologic preparations, targeting chromosomes 1, 8, and 9. Examining cell smears (n = 3), touch preparations (n = 20), and cytospins (n = 11) of non-neoplastic and neoplastic tissues, PRINS was as sensitive and reliable as the FISH method in assessing the exact chromosome number. Aneuploidy in tumor cells was confirmed by double-color PRINS in a part of the specimens. The PRINS reaction, which requires heating of the cell preparations to as high as 96 degrees C, did not affect the cytomorphologic details. Because PRINS is much faster and approximately 10 times less expensive than FISH, this method allows an increased application of interphase cytogenetics in diagnostic cytopathology.
