There does not as yet exist a clearly unifying concept of brief psychotherapy with children. Various forms of shortened treatment have been reported as successful. The technique described in this paper is a form of individual therapy based on psychoanalytic principles, especially those of ego psychology. It is primarily recommended for children who have suffered a real of symbolic object loss. Distinctive features include the early definition of a focus, a predetermined time limit, and careful attention to termination issues. The goals are relatively ambitious. When successful the therapy results in persistent psychodynamic changes. Case examples are used to illustrate how these positive results may occur through the medium of identification with the therapist, which permits a resolution or lessening of ambivalent dependence. This in turn allows the treatment experience to act as a model for future relationships with limited givers.

In this paper, we consider the effect of attachment disruptions on severe adjustment problems in school-age boys. Three groups of 9-11-year-old boys were sampled based on their degree of risk for adjustment difficulties: (1) boys in regular classrooms, (2) boys in regular classrooms who are at risk due to poverty, and (3) boys who have been placed in special education classrooms as a result of serious emotional disturbance (SED). Attachment disruptions were categorized according to the severity of major separations from the biological mother. SED children experienced significantly more severe disruptions of their relationships with their biological mothers and fathers than either the high-risk or comparison boys. Teachers' ratings indicated that both the high-risk and SED boys experienced more externalizing symptoms than comparison boys in regular classrooms. However, SED children were most clearly discriminated from their high-risk and comparison counterparts by higher levels of dissociative symptoms. Regression analyses indicated that children who had experienced maternal attachment disruptions were more likely to show dissociative symptomatology in the classroom setting and were more likely to develop dependent relationships with their teachers after risk group status, child age and family structure were controlled. Implications of these findings for the treatment of SED children are discussed.
The role of the family home as an attachment object was investigated in 57 preschool age children coping with the stress of a parental divorce. Results indicated that preschool age children of divorce exhibited an increased level of attachment to the family home as compared with children matched for age and socioeconomic status from intact family units who moved away from the family home. In addition, preschool age children who moved from the family home but show a high attachment to it demonstrate better behaviour adjustment than both the groups of children of divorce who showed low attachment after moving from the family home and the group who remained living in the family home after divorce (p less than .05).

Unstained frozen hydrated samples of myosin subfragment 1 (S-1) cross-linked to actin with the zero-length cross-linker 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide have been examined by electron microscopy in an effort to probe structural states of the attached cross-bridge. The cross-linked complex in the absence of ATP has a rigor-like appearance. In contrast, both in the presence of ATP and after the N, N'-p-phenylenedimaleimide (pPDM) bridging of the reactive thiols of S-1, the covalently attached cross-bridges of the acto X S-1 complex appear more disordered and no longer assume the characteristic rigor 45 degrees angle with the actin filaments. The images both in the presence and absence of ATP bear a striking resemblance to those obtained by negative staining of the cross-linked acto X S-1 complex (Craig, R., Greene, L. E. & Eisenberg, E. (1985) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S. A. 82, 3247-3251). The actin-bound pPDM S-1 complex, formed by treating the cross-linked complex with pPDM in the presence of ATP, is an expected analog of the weakly bound cross-bridge state. The disordered appearance of S-1 molecules of the cross-linked complex in the presence of ATP and after pPDM treatment may reflect the structural state of the weakly bound cross-bridge.

We have measured the orientation of a region of the myosin head, close to the junction with the rod, during active force generation. Paramagnetic probes were attached specifically to a reactive cysteine (Cys 125) of purified myosin light chain 2 (LC2) and exchanged into myosin heads in glycerinated rabbit psoas muscle. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to monitor the orientation of the probes. Previous work has shown that the LC2 bound spin probes are significantly ordered in rigor and muscle in the presence of adenosine diphosphate (ADP). In contrast, there is a nearly random angular distribution in relaxed muscle. We show here that during the generation of isometric tension, all of the LC2 bound spin probes (98 +/- 1.6%) show an angular distribution similar to that of relaxed muscle. These findings contrast with results obtained from probes attached to Cys 707 on the cross-bridge, located close to the actin binding site, where, during active force generation, a proportion of the spin probes were ordered as in rigor, whereas the remaining probes were disordered as in relaxation. To test the hypothesis that this ordered component is due to modification of Cys 707, we measured the spectra obtained from probes attached to LC2 in fibers modified at Cys 707. The modification of Cys 707 did not produce an ordered component in these spectra. The absence of an ordered component at the LC2 site limits the populations of some states in active fibers. An actin/myosin/ADP state is thought to be the major force-producing state. Our present results show that the populations of states with ordered probes on LC2 are < 2% in active fibers; thus, the major force-producing state is different from the one obtained by addition of ADP to rigor fibers.
This paper is a clinical one, relating to a four-year analysis of a 28-month-old girl who developed an autistic syndrome as a reaction to the violent abduction of her parents which she had seen. The reality of the violence of the political situation in the country helped blur the distinction between fantasy and reality for both analyst and patient. The author introduced melodic singing (after the failure of singing with lyrics) as a means of communication with the little girl. Her eventual recovery seems to have been possible because of the soundness of her upbringing during the first two years of her life.

Vascular brain diseases are ranked the third as the cause of morbidity and mortality, in spite of the progress in diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive procedures. In the majority of cases of vascular brain diseases, it is ischemic brain disease, which is the final and the most severe stage of cerebral arteries atherosclerosis. Etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis is not closer defined yet, but oxidative hypothesis is distinguished among the numerous theories. Within this theory, main place is attached to oxidative modification of LDL and Lp(a), together with numerous physiopathologic facts with the central role of reactive oxidative matters, where endothelial dysfunction is the main disorder responsible for the onset of numerous impairments, such as changes in coagulation-anticoagulation system. Considering these facts, it was established the hypothesis that in patients with IBD existed changes in hemostatic system, which were in positive correlation with the degree of cerebral atherosclerosis. The study comprised 36 patients with acute IBD and 28 patients with atherosclerotic encephalopathy. Control group was comprised of 30 patients with non-vascular diseases of similar characteristics. We investigated the correlation of the changes in hemostatic system (platelet aggregation, anti-thrombin III, D-dimer, protein C, factor VII, factor VIII, PAI-1) compared to the degree of cerebral atherosclerosis (ultrasonographically) and compared to the observed groups of patients. On the basis of all, the results of this study revealed significant increase of procoagulant factors concentration in patients with IBD, and similar changes were observed in patients with atherosclerotic encephalopathy, but less pronounced. All these changes in the total sample of patients, and particularly in patients with the pronounced cerebral atherosclerosis, are of primary and chronic character.
We have investigated the effect of magnesium pyrophosphate (MgPPi) on the orientation and stiffness of myosin heads in glycerinated muscle fibers. MgPPi is known to bind to the nucleotide site of myosin and to weaken the bond between myosin and actin. The spectra of paramagnetic probes attached to the reactive sulfhydryl on the myosin head were used to monitor the orientation of the head. Addition of 3 mM MgPPi to rigor fibers resulted in a shift of approximately 50% of the myosin heads from a state in which the probes are highly oriented to a state in which the probes are disordered. Experiments in which MgPPi dissociated labeled subfragment-1 from unlabeled fibers support the conclusion that the disordered probes are on myosin heads that are not attached to actin. Addition of MgPPi causes only a small decrease in fiber stiffness, measured by step changes in fiber length. We conclude that up to 50% of the myosin heads can be dissociated from actin with little change in muscle stiffness. Thus stiffness is not a linear measure of the fraction of myosin heads attached to actin. We present a model in which one head of the pair of a myosin molecule binds more weakly to actin and can be dissociated preferentially by the binding of MgPPi.
Research since 1972 in the field of "maternal deprivation" is critically reviewed. The results are used to reassess briefly the formulations proposed in 1972 and to discuss more fully the meaning and practical implications of fresh findings on new or recently revived topics. These include the development of social relationships and the process of bonding, critical periods of development, the links between childhood experiences and parenting behavior, influences on parenting, and the possible reasons why so many children do not succumb to deprivation or disadvantage.
In a prospective longitudinal study on child development from birth to age eight 362 first-born infants and their families were investigated. The subjects were distributed across the nine cells of a two-factorial design, factor 1 representing the degree of organic, factor 2 the degree of psychosocial risk. At age 3 months mother-child interaction was videotaped and evaluated with microanalytic technique. The quality of MCI could be demonstrated to be as predictive for later cognitive development as early developmental tests. Social-emotional problems of the toddler and preschool child was predicted better by parameters of early MCI than by temperament. Disturbed interactions were associated with later cognitive retardation and enhanced behavior problems. MCI is significantly determined by neglect and rejection, which showed typical behavioral patterns. The early separation of mother and high risk newborn itself did not lead to alterations in maternal attachment. Compared with mother daughter dyads early interaction of mother and son was characterized by more reactivity and positive emotion.
