The study is to explore the possible relationship between the level of trace element zinc in serum and periodontitis with Kidney deficiency. The level of serum zinc in 40 cases of periodontitis and in 19 normal controls was examined by atomic absorption spectrum analysis. The results indicated that there was only a descending trend of serum zinc in periodontitis group as compared with normal group. But further analysis revealed that according to the severity of periodontitis and the theory of Syndrome differentiation in TCM, it showed that the drop of serum zinc had not only a negative correlation with the severity of periodontitis, but also was co-related to whether there was Kidney deficiency or not. Serum zinc of periodontitis with Kidney Deficiency group was significantly lower than that of normal control group as well as the group of periodontitis without Kidney deficiency (P < 0.05). The data suggested that the decline of serum zinc level is closely related to the occurring and development of periodontitis with Kidney Deficiency.

Observation was made on the effect of different acupuncture manipulation on plasma estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), E2/T and cortisol (C) in 78 patients with kidney deficiency. The results showed that the level of E2 and T in women was lowered by both reinforcing manipulation (RFM) and reducing manipulation (RDM). E2/T index was lowered by RDM but not by RFM, and there was significance (P < 0.05) between the RDM group and RDM group in E2/T, but no significance between the man's groups. The level of C was decreased by RDM but not by RFM. The results suggest that the different manipulation effects are different on the level of sex hormones in women and the C content in patients with kidney deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: To observe therapeutic effect of "reducing south and reinforcing north" needling method on hypertension of type of yang-hyperactivity due to yin-deficiency, METHODS: Ninety cases of hypertension were randomly divided into a treatment group (n=59) treated with "reducing south and reinforcing north" needling method, and a control group (n=31) treated with capoten and aspirin. Their therapeutic effects on symptoms and blood pressure were compared. RESULTS: The total effective rate was 93.2% in the treatment group and 77.4% in the control group, the treatment group being better than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, systolic pressure and diastolic pressure in the two groups decreased (P<0.05), but with no significant difference between the two groups in the therapeutic effect of reducing blood pressure (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: "Reducing south and reinforcing north" needling method and oral administration of capoten and aspirin have similar effect in reducing blood pressure, and the treatment group is better than the control group in improving symptoms.

This paper sums up the clinical epidemiological investigation data on risk factors (RF) of coronary heart disease (CHD) among 743 office workers, with an average age of 61.0 +/- 8.0. The investigation involved factors relating to history, physical examination, biochemistry, blood rheology and TCM Syndrome Differentiation. According to the results of the computerized single-factor correlation analysis, the incidence of CHD in RF exposed group was obviously higher than that of unexposed one, 65 RF such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipemia, smoking, body weight, HDL-C/TC, blood viscosity etc. were recorded. Using multivariate regressive analysis it revealed that hypertension, diabetes, total cholesterol, heavy cigarette smoking, overweight, diastolic pressure, cortisol, TCM senile index, Blood Stasis Syndrome, Qi Stagnation Syndrome, Qi Deficiency Syndrome and Heart Deficiency Syndrome were the main RF. The result concerning RF of Western medicine (WM) was in conformity with that at home and abroad. In addition, some TCM-RF were selected which couldn't be replaced by WM-RF. These indicate that there are TCM-RF and WM-RF in the development of CHD and it is better to adopt the method for preventing and treating CHD with combined TCM-WM. As to TCM-RF of CHD, the authors consider that there are both the factors of Deficiency and Excess, so preventing and treating CHD should aim at reinforcing the Deficiency and reducing the Excess.
A study was conducted on the effects of Zhengda Zhenhua 851-R oral liquor on the improvement of memory and fluency of language of patients suffering from Kidney Deficiency and control group. It was found that the treated group did better in memory tests and the index of mental quotient (MQ) was higher than that of control group. They had markedly higher scores in the tests of directional memory which requires one's initiative and the free recollection of pictures. The scores achieved by the treated group were significantly higher than that of control on the tests of the fluency of language and expressions, particularly with words of different categories. The results showed that Zhengda Zhenhua 851-R oral liquor obviously had the function of improving the memory and fluency of language for Kidney Deficiency patients.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between cardiac Qi deficiency Syndrome and effect of circulatory renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and endogenous fibrinolytic system in rats with heart failure (HF). METHODS: Plasma RAS levels and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) activity were measured in 2 groups of rats: the sham-operated group (Group A) and the HF with Heart Qi deficiency Syndrome model group (Group B) established by making arteriovenous fistula. Using radioimmunoassay and chromatography, plasma renin activity (PRA) and angiotensin II (Ang II) levels and PAI-I activity were determined before, immediately after and 30 days after the surgical operation respectively. RESULTS: After the operation was completed in Group B the left ventricular dysfunction revealed, left ventricular systolic pressure decreased and end diastolic pressure increased (P < 0.05), PRA and Ang II level and PAI-1 activity increased significantly, as compared with those in Group A and before modeling (P < 0.05). With cardiac function improved, the plasma PRA, Ang II level and PAI-1 activity lowered in Group B comparing with those immediately after modeling (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The activation of RAS is associated with the endogenous fibrinolyticim balance, and play an important role in endogenous fibrinolytic system dysfunction in HF with Heart Qi deficiency Syndrome and Qi deficiency-blood stasis, which was helpful to explain that cause of hypercoagulant state in HF patients and increase the risk of suffering from embolism-thrombotic diseases, and might be the pathogenetic basis of Heart Qi deficiency induced Qi deficiency-blood stasis.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the pathogenesis of ano-rectal diseases caused by deficiency of Qi, which is correlated with obstruction of pulmonary ventilation. METHODS: The pulmonary ventilatory function was measured in 100 patients with the internal piles, the interno-external hemorrhoid and prolapse of rectum, the prolapse of anus was the principal symptom of them. RESULTS: Data from the 100 patients showed that 67% of them were diagnosed with the obstruction of pulmonary ventilation, the ratio was far less in the health control group. FEV 1.0 (mean +/- s) (2011.65 +/- 875) ml, MMF (1.84 +/- 1.24) L/s and PEF (2.34 +/- 1.51) L/s in male patients, (1551.54 +/- 514) ml, (1.57 +/- 0.62) L/s and (1.85 +/- 0.92) L/s in female patients, but those values were higher in the control than in the patients. The statistical analysis was performed and the difference was significant between patients and the control group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The patients with ano-rectal diseases caused by deficiency of Qi accompanied with obstruction of pulmonary ventilation in different degree and varied sorts, it confirmed that the pathogenesis of ano-rectal diseases caused by deficiency of Qi is related with "sinking of pectoral Qi".
The function of ANP in the cardiovascular regulation is very similar with the TCM theory of "the Heart governs blood circulation". Using the method of cardiac impedance to check cardiac output and the method of radioimmunoassay (RIA) to check plasma ANP, the result showed that in the status of Blood Deficiency Syndrome, cardiac function was impaired, there were reduced kinemia and stroke volume, as well as markedly raised plasma ANP and peripheral resistance. The above-mentioned indexes were significantly different from those of normal group (P < 0.01). Using multivariate regression analysis, cardiac output was negatively correlated with the plasma ANP (P < 0.05). 23 cases with Blood Deficiency Syndrome showed normal hemoglobin, but an evidently changed cardiac output and plasma ANP were closely related with the level of the Blood Deficiency. Both parameters might serve as the objective basis to reflect the level of Blood Deficiency to facilitate the clinical diagnosis of the patient.
310 patients (153 male, 157 female) of Blood Stasis were divided into various groups by Syndrome Differentiation of TCM and 35 healthy subjects were taken as control. The relationship of TCM Syndrome and function of blood platelet were studied with blood platelet counting, its volume, adherence and aggregation, plasma thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha(6k-PGF1 alpha) as indices of observation. The results were: (1) Blood platelet aggregation of Blood Stasis patients was higher than that in control (P > 0.001). (2) There were some differences of platelet aggregation among different TCM Syndromes. Platelet aggregation of Blood Stasis patients with Qi Deficiency was higher than that with other Syndromes significantly, and the aggregating rate in those patients was higher than that in control (P < 0.05). (3) The platelet aggregation and TXB2 of patient with Heart Qi Deficiency were significantly higher than those of the control (P < 0.05, P < 0.001), and they were also higher than of other groups of blood stasis patient with Spleen, Lung or Kidney Qi Deficiency.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the common TCM syndrome types of fatty liver by way of epidemic questionnaire, their occurrence ratio, and the correlation between various syndrome types and objective indexes. METHODS: A total of national wide 503 subjects with fatty liver were enrolled, the TCM syndromes, body mass index (BMI), abdominal perimeter/hip circumference, liver function, blood lipids, B ultrasonic examination and CT in them were observed and recorded. RESULTS: In the 46 symptoms investigated in total, the first ten symptoms in order of appearing rate were lassitude, obese, oral dryness, vertigo, hypochondriac distending pain, soreness and pain in loin, spiritlessness, oral bitterness, aching and weakness in knee and abdominal distention. The mostly appeared tongue figures were pale and corpulent or pale dim tongue proper, white greasy or yellow greasy tongue coating, and the mostly appeared pulse figures were taut, taut-thin and taut slippery. Statistical cluster analysis showed that syndromes of fatty liver could be typed into 4 TCM types, the asthenia Pi-Shen with Gan-stagnation type, the asthenia Pi-Shen type, the asthenia Pi with phlegm-heat type and the unclassified type. Among them the asthenia Pi-Shen with Gan-stagnation type was the commonest one, which accounted to 62.32%. CONCLUSION: The mostly appeared syndrome type of fatty liver was asthenia Pi-Shen with Gan-stagnation type. The TCM pathogenesis of fatty liver was deficiency of origin, mainly deficiency of Shen, involving Pi, with excess superficiality, the turbid-phlegm and blood stasis.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose is to conduct an epidemiological study of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and its syndrome types and symptoms of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) among adults (20-50 years old) in Hong Kong, and to discuss the TCM pathogenesis. METHODS DESIGN: Cross-sectional questionnaire survey. MEASURES: Demographic data, CDC (1994) CFS diagnostic criteria, Trudie Chalder fatigue scale, and China national standard for TCM syndrome types criteria. SUBJECTS: Twenty to fifty years old adults by convenient sampling. RESULTS: One thousand and thirteen subjects were successfully interviewed. Five hundred and eighty-five subjects (57.8%) had different levels of fatigue. Sixty-five subjects (6.4%) met CFS diagnostic criteria. In terms of TCM syndrome types, blood stasis due to qi deficiency had the highest prevalence (35.7%) among CFS. In the 54 symptoms investigated in total, the first eight symptoms in order of appearing rates were soreness of loins and weakness in knees, poor spirit, lassitude, pain, insomnia, forgetting, vessels blood stasis, vertigo and dazzle. The mostly appeared tongue figures were pale and corpulent or pale dim tongue proper, white and white greasy tongue coating, and the mostly appeared pulse figure was sunken-thin. CONCLUSION: The point prevalence of CFS among adults of 20 to 50 years old was found to be 6.4%. The most prevalent TCM syndrome type was blood stasis due to qi deficiency. The TCM pathogenesis of CFS was deficiency of origin, mainly deficiency of qi and kidney, with excess of superficiality.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between bone mineral density and Syndrome type of TCM in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for providing the base of clinical integrative traditional Chinese and western medical therapy for the disease through the Syndrome typing and determination of changes in bone metabolism and bone density. METHODS: Bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar vertebrae 2-4, femoral neck, Ward's triangle and trochanter in 27 COPD male patients, 25 male control subjects and 25 healthy persons were determined using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, patient's Syndrome type, their blood levels of total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, bone glaprotein, hydroxyproline, calcium, phosphate, urine levels of calcium/creatine and phosphorous/creatine as well as arterial blood gas were also determined. RESULTS: The BMD in COPD patients accompanied with respiratory failure or with course > 10 years was higher than that in COPD patients without respiratory failure or with course < or = 10 years, BMD in COPD patients of Fei-Pi-Shen type was lower than that in those of Fei-Pi, but the urine hydroxyprdine in the former was higher than that in the latter (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: (1) COPD is a risk factor for osteoporosis; (2) Shen Deficiency is the key and nucleus of secondary osteoporosis to COPD; (3) It is inferred that early regulation of Shen may be facilitated to prevent osteoporosis in COPD patients.
The hearing and serum trace element of 73 cases of chronic nephropathy were measured. Results showed that the incidence of hearing damage in high frequency was 68.5% with a mean hypoacusis of 35.1 +/- 6.1 dB, while in 55 patients of Kidney Deficiency type, the incidence of hearing damage in high frequency was 83.6%, it was significantly higher than that in patients without Kidney Deficiency. The serum levels of trace elements (iron and zinc) in patients with Kidney Deficiency were lower than that of normal level and in patients without Kidney Deficiency, and the decrease of serum iron was directly proportional to the degree of hearing damage. There were close relationship between the Kidney Deficiency with the hearing damage as well as the serum levels of iron and zinc.
