The effects of aerobic exercise and T'ai Chi on blood pressure in older people: results of a randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects on blood pressure of a 12-week moderate-intensity aerobic exercise program and a T'ai Chi program of light activity. DESIGN: A randomized clinical trial. SETTING: A suburban clinic in the Baltimore, MD, area. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-two sedentary older adults (45% black, 79% women, aged > or = 60 years) with systolic blood pressure 130-159 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure < 95 mm Hg (not on antihypertensive medication). INTERVENTION: Participants were randomized to a 12-week aerobic exercise program or a light intensity T'ai Chi program. The goal of each condition was to exercise 4 days per week, 30 minutes per day. MEASUREMENTS: Blood pressure was measured during three screening visits and every 2 weeks during the intervention. Estimated maximal oxygen uptake and measures of physical activity level were determined at baseline and at the end of the intervention period. RESULTS: Mean (SD) baseline systolic and diastolic blood pressures were 139.9 (9.3) mm Hg and 76.0 (7.3) mm Hg, respectively. For systolic blood pressure, adjusted mean (SE) changes during the 12-week intervention period were -8.4 (1.6) mm Hg and -7.0 (1.6) mm Hg in the aerobic exercise and T'ai Chi groups, respectively (each within-group P < .001; between-group P = .56). For diastolic blood pressure, corresponding changes were -3.2 (1.0) mm Hg in the aerobic exercise group and -2.4 (1.0) mm Hg in the T'ai Chi group (each within-group P < .001; between-group P = .54). Body weight did not change in either group. Estimated maximal aerobic capacity tended to increase in aerobic exercise (P = .06) but not in T'ai Chi (P = .24). CONCLUSIONS: Programs of moderate intensity aerobic exercise and light exercise may have similar effects on blood pressure in previously sedentary older individuals. If additional trials confirm these results, promoting light intensity activity could have substantial public health benefits as a means to reduce blood pressure in older aged persons.

Spatial organization of frequency response areas and rate/level functions in the developing AI.

The current study was conducted to extend our understanding of changes in spatial organization and response properties of cortical neurons in the developing mammalian forebrain. Extracellular multiunit responses to tones were recorded from a dense array of penetrations covering entire isofrequency contours in the primary auditory cortex (AI) of pentobarbital anesthetized kittens. Ages ranged from postnatal day 14 (P14), shortly after acquisition of normal auditory response thresholds, through postnatal day 111 (P111), when the kittens were largely mature. Spatial organization of the AI was tonotopically ordered by P14. The tonotopic gradient decreased with chronological maturation. At P14 the gradient was about 3.5 kHz/mm. By P111 it had declined to about 2.5 kHz/mm, so that the cortical region encompassing a fixed 3- to 15-kHz frequency range enlarged along its posterior-anterior dimension. Response properties of developing AI neurons changed in both frequency selectivity and intensity selectivity. The mean frequency tuning bandwidth increased with age. Initially, tuning bandwidths were narrow throughout the entire AI. With progressive maturation, broader bandwidths were observed in areas dorsal and ventral to a central region in which neurons remained narrowly tuned. The resulting spatial organization of tuning bandwidth was similar to that reported in adult cats. The majority of recording sites manifested nonmonotonic rate/level functions at all ages. However, the proportion of sites with monotonic rate/level functions increased with age. No spatial organization of rate/level functions (monotonic and nonmonotonic) was observed through P111. The relatively late development of bandwidth tuning in the AI compared with the early presence of tonotopic organization suggests that different developmental processes are responsible for structuring these two dimensions of acoustic selectivity.

Effect of early enteral feeding on apolipoprotein AI levels and high-density lipoprotein heterogeneity in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND/AIM: We have previously shown that infants receiving total parenteral nutrition have low apolipoprotein AI levels which are associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) class distributions as in lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase deficiency. This study investigates the influence of early enteral feedings on apolipoprotein AI and HDL subclasses. METHODS: Apolipoprotein AI and HDL distributions were determined in 15 total parenterally fed preterm infants (TPN group) receiving early feedings, in 28 enterally fed preterm infants (ENT group), and in 26 term infants at birth and on day 5. The HDL subclasses were determined by gradient gel electrophoresis. RESULTS: In the TPN group, the apolipoprotein AI levels increased significantly postnatally (from 73 +/- 16 to 104 +/- 23 mg/dl) to levels found in the term and ENT groups on day 5 (88 +/- 16 and 96 +/- 19 mg/dl). The HDL subclass distributions at birth and on day 5 were similar in both TPN and ENT groups with more large HDL(2b) and less small HDL(3c )than in term infants. Whereas the HDL subclass distribution of term infants remained unchanged, in TPN and ENT infants, a shift from HDL(2b) to HDL(3c) was observed, with no difference between term and preterm infants on day 5. CONCLUSION: In contrast to exclusively parenterally fed infants, infants receiving early enteral feedings exhibited a significant rise of apolipoprotein AI and HDL subclass distributions as fully enterally fed preterm infants.

Increased cholesterol efflux in apolipoprotein AI (ApoAI)-producing macrophages as a mechanism for reduced atherosclerosis in ApoAI((-/-)) mice.

The concentration of apolipoprotein (apo) AI in the artery wall is thought to enhance cellular cholesterol efflux and protect against atherosclerosis. It has been shown that although macrophages do not make apoAI, they respond to it by increased cholesterol efflux. We hypothesized that macrophage production of apoAI would increase cholesterol efflux and reduce atherogenesis. In this study, we produced mice expressing human apoAI under the control of the macrophage-specific scavenger receptor-A promoter (mphi-AI). Human apoAI was detectable in the serum HDL fraction of mphi-AI transgenic mice at concentrations too low to affect serum cholesterol or HDL levels. Immunoblotting showed the presence of human apoAI in transgenic macrophage culture supernatants, mostly as lipoprotein-free protein, with a small component associated with HDL-like particles. Atherosclerosis studies using apoAI((-/-)) mice transplanted with mphi-AI bone marrow showed that in the absence of macrophage-derived apoE, local expression of apoAI reduced diet-induced lesions in the proximal aorta. Additionally, mphi-AI macrophages showed a 40% increase in cholesterol efflux compared with control macrophages. These data support the hypothesis that apoAI production by macrophages in the artery wall is protective against atherosclerosis. This protection is likely mediated by increased cholesterol efflux and decreased foam cell formation in vivo.

Kinetic parameters for high density lipoprotein apoprotein AI and cholesteryl ester transport in the hamster.

These studies were undertaken to determine the kinetic characteristics of high density lipoprotein (HDL) apo AI and cholesteryl ester transport in the hamster in vivo. Saturable HDL apo AI transport was demonstrated in the kidneys, adrenal glands, and liver. Saturable HDL cholesteryl ester transport was highest in the adrenal glands and liver. In the liver and adrenal glands, maximal transport rates (J(m)) for receptor dependent uptake were similar for the protein and cholesteryl ester moieties; however, the concentration of HDL necessary to achieve half-maximal transport (K(m)) was 20- to 30-fold higher for apo AI. Consequently, at normal plasma HDL concentrations, the clearance of HDL cholesteryl ester exceeded that of HDL apo AI by approximately 10-fold in the adrenal glands and by approximately fivefold in the liver. At normal HDL concentrations, the majority of HDL cholesteryl ester (76%) was cleared by the liver whereas the majority of HDL apo AI (77%) was cleared by extrahepatic tissues. The rate of HDL cholesteryl ester uptake by the liver equaled the rate of cholesterol acquisition by all extrahepatic tissues suggesting that HDL cholesteryl ester uptake by the liver accurately reflects the rate of "reverse cholesterol transport." Receptor dependent HDL cholesteryl ester uptake by the liver was maximal (saturated) at normal plasma HDL concentrations. Consequently, changes in plasma HDL concentrations are not accompanied by parallel changes in the delivery of HDL cholesteryl ester to the liver unless the number or affinity of transporters is also regulated.

In vivo evidence for the role of lipoprotein lipase activity in the regulation of apolipoprotein AI metabolism: a kinetic study in control subjects and patients with type II diabetes mellitus.

The aim of this study was to delineate the role of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity in the kinetic alterations of high density lipoprotein (HDL) metabolism in patients with type II diabetes mellitus compared with controls. The kinetics of HDL were studied by endogenous labeling of HDL apolipoprotein AI (HDL-apo AI) using a primed infusion of D(3)-leucine. The HDL-apo AI fractional catabolic rate (FCR) was significantly increased (0.32 +/- 0.07 vs. 0.23 +/- 0.05 pool/day; P < 0.01), and HDL composition was changed [HDL cholesterol, 0.77 +/- 0.16 vs. 1.19 +/- 0.37 mmol/L (P < 0.05); HDL triglycerides, 0.19 +/- 0.12 vs. 0.10 +/- 0.03 mmol/L (P < 0.05)] in diabetic patients compared with healthy subjects. HDL-apo AI FCR was correlated to plasma and HDL triglyceride concentrations (r = 0.82; P < 0.05 and r = 0.80; P < 0.05, respectively) and to homeostasis model assessment (r = 0.78; P < 0.05). Postheparin plasma LPL activity was decreased in type II diabetes (6.8 +/- 2.8 vs. 18.1 +/- 5.2 micromol/mL postheparin plasma.h; P < 0.005) compared with that in healthy subjects and was correlated to the FCR of HDL-apo AI (r = -0.63; P < 0.05). LPL activity was also correlated with HDL cholesterol (r = 0.78; P < 0.05), plasma and HDL triglycerides (r = -0.87; P < 0.005 and r = -0.83; P < 0.05, respectively), and homeostasis model assessment (r = -0.79; P < 0.05). In addition, the LPL to hepatic lipase ratio was correlated with the catabolic rate of HDL (r = -0.76; P < 0.06). These results suggest that a decrease in the LPL to hepatic lipase ratio in type II diabetes mellitus, mainly related to lowered LPL activity, could induce an increase in HDL catabolism. These alterations in HDL kinetics in type II diabetes proceed to some extent from changes in their composition, probably linked to an increase in triglyceride transfer from very low density lipoprotein particles, in close relationship with LPL activity and resistance to insulin.

The 3'-flanking region shared by the human apolipoprotein AI and CIII gene regulates gene expression in cooperation with 5'-flanking elements.

The genes of the apolipoproteins AI and CIII are localized in opposite orientation on chromosome 11 in close vicinity, separated from each other by a non-coding intergenic region of 2.1 kb. The interdependence of their expression has been studied in cotransfection experiments in Hep G2 cells. An expression vector harboring the intergenic region with CAT as reporter gene and likewise pUC 19 derivatives with the putative cis-elements were constructed. Inhibition of gene expression by 5'-flanking elements of the apo AI and CIII gene was observed. Four proteins have been identified in nuclear extracts of Hep G2 cells that bind to several sequences of the intergenic domain but not to the 5'-flanking regions of apo AI or CIII gene. These proteins might be responsible for the silencer effect. The pathway of the regulation of apo CIII and AI expression derived from the experiments described here is supported by mutations in the intergenic region, leading to the phenotype of hypertriglyceridemia, and the stimulatory effect of cholesterol on apo AI transcription in Hep G2 cells.

AI-integrated digital breeding for crop improvement.

Crop breeding increasingly depends on the effective integration and interpretation of large, heterogeneous datasets spanning genomic, phenotypic, multi-omics, and environmental layers. Conventional breeding approaches are often insufficient to capture the complex relationships among these data or to support timely selection decisions. Digital breeding can help address this limitation by complementing field experimentation, mixed models, and genomic prediction with the integration of biological data and computational prediction throughout the breeding process. In particular, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has improved the analysis of high-dimensional datasets and broadened its application to trait prediction, selection, and breeding design. Here, we review recent developments in AI-enabled digital breeding, encompassing genomic, phenomic, and multi-omics data generation and analysis, predictive modeling, explainable and generative AI, and data-driven breeding decision support. We further discuss emerging AI applications, their current contributions to crop research and breeding, and the major considerations affecting their reliable and practical implementation. Collectively, this review provides a structured understanding of the roles of AI across the digital breeding process and offers guidance for future methodological development and practical application in crop improvement.

The relationship of AIS to peak virtual power.

All injuries require an expenditure of energy. Here it is postulated that injury severity is proportional to Peak Virtual Power (PVP). PVP is compared to AIS scores for frontal impact with belted drivers, for all types of injuries and all body regions, from the Co-operative Crash Injury Study (CCIS) and NASS-CDS databases. The excellent correlations obtained show that the AIS score is linearly proportional to Peak Virtual Power, which is proportional to delta V3 for restrained occupants, and delta V2 for unrestrained occupants. Therefore, although phenomenological, AIS appears to measure a physical quantity. It is concluded that there appears to be a "Master Curve" of AIS versus mean delta V for car occupants, implying that the amount of power for a given injury level is a constant, irrespective of injury type. There appear to be significant differences between the AIS scores for abdominal injuries between CCIS and NASS-CDS, and detailed case studies should be conducted to resolve the differences.

[T'ai chi in the elderly: practical aspects].

New approaches to health promotion for the growing geriatric population are needed. Low to moderately intense exercise programs, such as T'ai Chi seem particularly appropriate for older individuals because of many worthwhile physiological and psychological long-term benefits. T'ai Chi reduces falls and improves postural stability in older adults. It also has a positive impact on muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness and can improve mobility in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It imparts a sense of well-being and confidence, and can reduce fear of falling in older adults. This article reviews the current medical literature regarding the multiple effects of T'ai Chi. Historical aspects of T'ai Chi and its current adaptation for practice by healthy older adults are presented. Finally, a set of modified exercises is proposed that is based on underlying principles of T'ai Chi and can be applied to patients with mild to moderate cognitive impairment.

[Relationship of msp AI polymorphism in cytochrome P450c 17alpha gene with bone mass and bone size in Shanghai men of Han nationality].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of Msp AI polymorphism in the promoter region of cytochrome P450c 17alpha (CYP17) gene with bone mass and bone size in Shanghai men of Han nationality. METHODS: The CYP17 Msp AI genotype was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in 397 unrelated men (324 healthy men, 73 osteoporosis patients) aged 46-80 years of Han nationality in Shanghai. Bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone cross-section area (CSA) at lumber spine 1-4 and at any sites of proximal femur, including femoral neck, trochanter and Ward's triangle were measured by duel-energy X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS: Frequency distributions of CYP17 genotype were TC (51.1%), CC (33.8%), and TT (15.1%). The allele frequencies T and C were 40.7% and 59.3%, respectively. Allele frequencies did not deviate from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The frequencies of CYP17 Msp AI genotype did not show difference between osteoporosis cases and healthy controls. In group of all population, or in subgroups of osteoporosis patients and healthy men, CYP17 Msp AI genotype was not significantly associated with BMD, BMC, and CSA at lumber spine 1-4 and at any sites of proximal femur after having been adjusted for age, weight, and height with analysis of covariance. CONCLUSION: Msp AI polymorphism of CYP17 gene is not a genetic factor that influence the variation of bone mass and bone size in Shanghai men of Han nationality.

Response to a urate-lowering diet according to polymorphisms in the apolipoprotein AI-CIII-AIV cluster.

OBJECTIVE: The apolipoprotein AI-CIII-AIV cluster has been associated with the response to a urate-lowering diet, and polymorphisms in the apolipoprotein CIII gene have been associated with hyperuricemia and hypertriglyceridemia. We assessed the influence of polymorphisms in the apolipoprotein AI-CIII-AIV cluster on the response to a urate-lowering diet in patients with hyperuricemia. METHODS: A urate-lowering diet was followed for 2 weeks by 64 men with hyperuricemia. Plasma concentrations of triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, and uric acid, and the uric acid clearance and 24-hour uric acid urinary excretory fraction were measured before and after the diet. The data were analyzed in association with the polymorphisms of the apolipoprotein AI-CIII-AIV gene cluster. RESULTS: After the urate-lowering diet, the plasma levels of triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, and uric acid and 24-hour uric acid excretion all fell significantly. Paired sample ANOVA showed that the decrease was mainly due to the diet, except for the plasma triglycerides, which were influenced by allele X2 of the XmnI polymorphism of the apolipoprotein AI gene. CONCLUSION: The response of the biological variables to a urate-lowering diet was mainly influenced by diet. Changes in triglycerides were also influenced by the apolipoprotein AI XmnI polymorphism (p = 0.04), suggesting a gene-diet interaction (p = 0.03).

Cold autoimmune hemolytic anemia with auto-anti-AI specificity: 51chromium survival studies.

A 65-year-old woman was found to have severe autoimmune hemolytic anemia. The patient was group A1, Rho(D) positive. The direct antiglobulin test was strongly positive with anti-C3 and negative with anti- IgG. The serum contained two distinct IgM antibodies, auto-anti-I and auto-anti-AI. Both were reactive at 22 degrees C. However, the anti-AI also was reactive in saline and in albumin at 37 degrees C. An eluate revealed anti-AI and a weak anti-I. Sequential 51Chromium survival studies were done with group OI and AI red cells. The group OI red cells survived normally (97% at 24 hours) while the group A1I red cells were removed in a "two-component" pattern characteristic of IgM complement-fixing antibodies (62% survival at one hour, 49% at 24 hours). Based on these observations, the patient was subsequently transfused without incidence with six group O units of washed red cells prior to splenectomy. Although auto-anti-AI has been previously reported, this is the first case to demonstrate the use of 51Cr survival studies to determine its clinical significance.

Situated, strategic, and AI-Enhanced technology introduction to healthcare.

We work hard on creating AI-wings for physicians to let them fly higher and faster in diagnosing patients--a task that physicians do not want to automate. What we do not work hard on is determining the ENVIRONMENT in which physicians' AI wings are supposed to function. It seems to be a job for social/business analysts that have their own separate kingdom. For the sake of all of us (potential patients!) social/business consultants and their methodologies should not be treated as a separate kingdom. The most urgent task is to achieve synergy between (1) AI/Fuzzy/Neural research, (2) Applied medical AI, (3) Social/Business research on medical institutions. We need this synergy in order to assure humanistic medical technology; technology flexible and sensitive enough to facilitate healthcare work while leaving space for human pride and creativity. In order to achieve humanistic technology, designers should consider the impact of technological breakthroughs on the organizations in which this technology will function and the nature of work of humans destined to use this technology. Situated (different for each organization), Strategic (based on an in-depth knowledge of Healthcare business), and AI-Enhanced (ended with a dynamic model) method for introducing technology to Healthcare allows identifying areas where technology can make medical work easier. Using this method before automating human work will get us closer to the ideal where there is no discontinuity between design and use of programs; where the technology matches users' needs perfectly--the world with humanistic technology and healthcare workers with AI-wings.

Rapid diagnosis of avian influenza (AI) and assessment of pathogenicity of avian H5 and H7 subtypes by molecular methods.

Avian influenza (AI) is a highly contagious viral disease of poultry that is found worldwide. There are two forms of AI: a mild form called low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI), and a severe form called highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). HPAI is associated with the H5 and H7 subtypes of AI virus (AIV) and is subject to Federal control and International reporting. A real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) assay has been developed and validated that can help in the early detection of AI outbreaks. The rRT-PCR assay can also be used to identify infections caused by H5 and H7 subtypes of AIV New isolates of AIV must be characterized as LPAI or HPAI for reporting and control purposes. The criteria for classification of an AI virus as HPAI are defined by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE); the definition includes a virulence and a molecular criterion. The virulence requirement for HPAI is defined as an AIV killing 75% or more of eight inoculated chickens within 10 days. The molecular criterion is the presence of multiple dibasic amino acids at the proteolytic cleavage site of the haemagglutinin (H) protein. All HPAI viruses isolated before 2002 fulfilled both the virulence and molecular criteria. Consequently, nucleotide sequencing of the H gene and deduction of the amino acid motif at the H cleavage site has been successfully used to assess the virulence of H5 and H7 AIVs rapidly. Since 2002, however, there have been three outbreaks of HPAI where the viruses responsible for the outbreaks have either fulfilled the virulence criterion or the molecular criterion, but not both.

[Clinical significance of apolipoprotein B and AI determinations in coronary heart disease].

In this report, the relative validity of serum apolipoprotein (apo) B and AI analyses in the discrimination of coronary heart disease (CHD) was evaluated, and compared with the results of serum triglyceride (TG) total cholesterol, low density and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) determinations. 101 cases of CHD, 95 cases of myocardial infarction survivors (MIS) and 177 cases of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were studied, with a control group including 266 age and sex matched healthy subjects. The results of monovariant statistics showed that apo B had highest percentage of positive results, and TG had most prominent elevation of mean values in CHD and MIS groups. Both multivariant stepwise discrimination and logistic regression analyses demonstrated the superiority of HDL-C, apo B and apo AI in detecting CHD in men; while in female subjects, apo B remained as the best discriminator, but apo AI and HDL-C lost its statistic significance. The quantitative relationships among apo AI, HDL-C and TG were discussed briefly. Since the decrease in HDL-C level in CHD were mainly due to hypertriglyceridemia, the significance of high TG level in correlation with CHD should not be neglected. AII serum lipids and apo B AI levels were decreased in AMI cases, and reached lowest values after 7 days. But the level of these variables were not changed significantly within 48 hours after onset of the episode. There was no frank correlation between the degree of serum lipid lowering and prognosis of AMI.

Association of cholesterol concentrations in low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein subfractions, and of apolipoproteins AI and AII, with coronary stenosis and left ventricular function.

We examined the association of cholesterol levels in serum lipoprotein fractions, as well as of serum apolipoprotein-AI (apo-AI) and apo-AII levels, with coronary artery stenosis (CAS) and left ventricle function in a group of 43 patients with angina pectoris (33 men and 10 women) subjected to angiography. Cholesterol level in VLDL, LDL, HDL2, and HDL3 fractions was determined after separation of these fractions by density gradient ultracentrifugation. HDL-cholesterol is the sum of cholesterol in HDL2 and HDL3. Cineangiography yielded scores for CAS and for left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF). On univariate regression CAS was correlated weakly with LDL-cholesterol (positive) and with HDL3-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol (negative), and more strongly with LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol (positive), but not with HDL2-cholesterol. LVEF was correlated positively with HDL3-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, apo-AI, and apo-AII. Of other "risk factors," none was correlated with CAS, and a history of previous myocardial infarction (PMI) was the only one significantly correlated with LVEF. CAS itself was also correlated negatively with LVEF. In multiple regression analysis with two or three independent variables, the relation of HDL(3)-cholesterol with CAS remained significant when other risk factors were taken into account. LVEF remained related positively with HDL(3)-cholesterol, apo-AI, or apo-AII, when either of them was tested in combination with other risk factors; of these only PMI made a significant independent contribution. Conclusions for this patient group (with low HDL-cholesterol): HDL3-cholesterol, and not HDL2-cholesterol, is informative for CAS; HDL(3)-cholesterol, apo-AI, or apo-AII, as well as CAS and PMI, are associated with LVEF.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Concentrations of apolipoprotein AI, AII, and E in plasma and lipoprotein fractions of alcoholic patients: gender differences in the effects of alcohol.

Previous studies have shown that plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and the two major protein components of HDLs, i.e., apolipoproteins AI and AII, were elevated in male alcoholic patients without serious liver injury. By contrast, alcohol effect on apolipoprotein E remains unclear. Apolipoprotein E is a major component of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and a minor component of human high-density lipoprotein. It plays a critical role in lipoprotein metabolism through cellular lipoprotein receptors. Furthermore, previous works were carried out mostly with male subjects, whereas alcohol effects on serum apolipoproteins in female subjects have not yet been adequately addressed. In this study, we have raised antibodies specifically to recognize human apolipoprotein AI, AII, and E, respectively, to quantify apolipoprotein concentrations in plasma and lipoprotein fractions of male and female alcoholic patients. We have also measured plasma apolipoprotein concentrations in patients who had abstained from alcohol while in the hospital. Our results showed the following: (1) plasma concentrations of apolipoprotein AI and AII were significantly elevated yet plasma apolipoprotein E decreased (33%) significantly (P < .01) in male alcoholic patients; (2) apolipoprotein AI concentrations in female nondrinking control subjects were higher than in male controls, and the concentrations of apolipoprotein AI in female alcoholic patients were not significantly elevated over those of female controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
