A pilot study of the effect of exposure to child abuse or neglect on adolescent suicidal behavior.

The authors designed a pilot study to test if exposure to child abuse or neglect is associated with suicidal behavior in adolescence. Each of 159 adolescents who had attempted suicide was age- and sex-matched with two comparison subjects who had been treated for medical conditions unrelated to suicide attempts. The registry of the Massachusetts Department of Social Services was searched for the names of the subjects and comparison subjects. For both sexes prior contact with the Department of Social Services was three to six times more likely for probands than for the comparison subjects.

Tobacco use and cessation behavior among adolescents participating in organized sports.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the difference in tobacco use between adolescents who participate in organized sports and those who do not. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, this study uses data from a nationally representative sample of adolescents enrolled in public high schools in the United States. RESULTS: Those participating in organized sports were 25% less likely to be current cigarette smokers. However, smokeless tobacco use was found to be associated with participation in organized sports. CONCLUSIONS: Given the large proportion of students involved in organized sports, intervening through this venue to address tobacco use has the potential to reach significant numbers of adolescents.

[Traumatic events in childhood and suicidal behavior in adolescence].

The history of adolescents having suicidal behaviour often involves traumatic events of diverse nature and severity. Through their impact on the psyche of the individual, these events can add to the vulnerability of adolescents at this sensitive time in their development. The practitioner should be particularly attentive in the follow up of children and adolescents who have suffered trauma. In the event of suicidal behaviour in adolescence, the search for traumatic events should not be systematic and intrusive. The various consultants involved should rather try to arrange room for reflection and exchange, so that any suffering can be expressed. It is more than an event- or factual-related approach; rather, the adolescent should be allowed to reconstitute lived trauma, to regain his capacities of representation and of relationship, and to give sense to his acts.

[Aggressive behavior in adolescent groups].

Aggressive behaviour of adolescents may be based either on an inborn personality structure, or cultivated by training, i.e. the character of punishment. It is encountered in children with organic disorders of the CNS or psychotic disease. A specific case is aggressive behaviour in communities, being found in particular in communities of boys. The authors describe a typical case of an aggressor and the typical profile of the victim. Psychiatric intervention involves psychotherapeutic treatment and influencing of the social and family which should be focused on possible aggressive behaviour.
