[Conventional and 3-D cephalometry: descriptive analysis].

Today, the three dimension (3D) teleradiographic different construction enable a three dimensional studies of different mandible structures. Then we can approach the result obtained with the news images processing techniques like scanner. In this paper we present the different between the measure provided by different pictures (lateralis, frontalis, axiales) and the three dimensional measure which is real. The best 3D values correlation is obtained with the frontalis.

[Lateral cephalometry in Chinese population with esthetic face].

According to selections of both the public and the orthognathic surgeons, 100 lateral cephalograms were taken on the male and the female young adults with esthetic face and normal occlusion. Each X-Y coordinate value of 18 landmarks, 10 angular and 10 linear measurements, and 5 linear ratios were analysed. The features of the craniofacial structure of the hard tissue profile in the Chinese group with esthetic face were emphasized as follows. 1. The craniofacial structure of the esthetic group presents its typicality, which is accord with the basic principles of esthetics. 2. Great individual variation was found in the lower third of the face. 3. The profile patterns of the lower third face in the esthetic group become well-developed and chubby convexity which looks relatively straight. 4. The differences exist in the craniofacial skeleton structure between male and female.

[Cephalometry of cleft lip and palate].

This study demonstrated that there were basic differences in facial morphology between patients with cleft lip and palate and subjects with non clefting. The findings are obtained on cephalometric analysis of skull's teleradiograph L-L. These differences are for all pratical purposes confined to the maxillary complex. The mandible appear, instead, normal unless in the position in every respect in the not cleft lip and palate subjects.

A morphometric analysis of the fetal craniofacies by ultrasound: fetal cephalometry.

We present here a set of 24 standardized linear measurements that describe the growth of different craniofacial structures in the normal fetus from 16 to 36 weeks of gestation. These measurements were taken from 89 pregnant women, who had from 1 to 3 ultrasonographic evaluations during the pregnancy (16, 26, and 36 weeks of gestation). All the values presented here were obtained using the technique described by Escobar et al. The mean and standard deviation was calculated for each measurement and was used to estimate the normal growth pattern of each variable. Approximate confidence intervals for the mean of each variable were constructed for use in identifying unusually low or high values. The confidence intervals are available in graphic form by request. These data will not only contribute to an understanding of fetal craniofacial growth and development in utero, but in addition, it will help to make the diagnoses of mild craniofacial anomalies that would not be detected by the routine ultrasonographic examination. We suggest that this procedure should be included if not in all routine obstetrical ultrasound evaluations, then at least in the more extensive level II obstetrical ultrasound.

[New directions in cranio-cervico-mandibular cephalometry].

A pilot survey has been conducted on a sample of 22 adolescents in order to correlate the cranio-facial morphology and the condylar position with the mandibular posture, cranio-cervical posture and airway adequacy. Cephalograms extended to the cervical column and oblique lateral trans-cranial X-Rays with the standard projection has been adopted. The use of specific cephalometrics parameters allowed to separate the sample in sub-groups with similar variables and to obtain diagnostic indications. The utility of an analysis not only cranio-basal but extended to the cranio-cervical, intercervical, cervico-mandibular and hyoid parameters has been demonstrated.

[Mandible and its image, thought on cephalometry].

Starting with the mandible, chosen as a pretext, the author of this book thinks about the necessity of its shape as it is observed by anatomists and orthodontists; he draws conclusions which lead him to have reservations as to the kind of thinking which impel most of the methods of cephalometric analysis and argues for a new "look" in imaging.

[Tracing and measuring errors in the roentgenographic cephalometry].

In the present study, thirty cephalometric films which had been used in three different investigations using almost the same parameters were selected and divided into two groups. Twenty-three parameters in the first group and nine parameters in the second, which were used in two and three investigations respectively, were statistically compared. Paired t test was used in the first group and variance analysis in the second group. In conclusion, a lot of parameters exhibited statistically significant variability, while some of them were not.

[Cephalometry in modern orthodontic diagnosis].

By this work, the author wanted to simplify concepts and extrapolate the useful elements for an easy understanding of the problems relating to the cephalometric data. He establishes the primary objectives that must be held into consideration in every cephalometric analysis. He analyses widely the problems connected to the skeleton, to the teeth, to the soft tissues and their interrelations. He completes his work supplying precise indications of extraction therapy into wrong occlusion in which prevail alveolus-dental discrepancy.

[Application of digital image processing techniques in cephalometry].

Digital image processing methods were applied to cephalometric analysis. Conventionally taken x-rays were captured by the aid of a video-camera. Digital processing was done using the IPS-System (Kontron). The resulting average error of the method at this stage of development was comparable to that of the traditional method using a light box.
