[The morphology of the CNS in carbon tetrachloride poisoning. 6. Histology of spinal ganglia in the lumbosacric region (experimental studies) (author's transl)].

As a further report on our investigations concerning the effects of carbon tetrachloride intoxication the histological findings in lumbosacric ganglia of 48 rabbits are presented. The substance was applied perorally as well as a subcutaneously to 24 animals in each group. Detectable alterations were weak and consisted of pathobioses and pathonecroses of the ganglion cells and, partly as a consequence of these lesions, of an activation of glial elements. In most of the test animals as well as in 10 of the 11 controls cytoplasmic vascuoles were found. From the pathogenetic point of view the impairment of elementary cell functions by anoxemia both with primary and secondary hepatorenally caused lesions may be of major importance.

[Ultrastructural localization of Mg++- and Ca++-activated adenosine triphosphatase spinal ganglia of the sheep and goat].

Light and electron microscopic investigations on the Mg++- and Ca++-activated ATPase of sheep and goat dorsal root ganglion have been carried out. Reaction products occur in plasma membranes and interfaces between neurons and sheath cells, between adjacent sheath cells and on the surface of unmyelinated fibers. Cytoplasmic protrusions of ganglion cells and numerous surface increasing invaginations of sheath membranes form close connections between neurons and sheath cells.

[Effect of epidural morphine analgesia on the NO-forming activity of nociceptive neurons of the spinal ganglia and bone marrow].

The effect of epidural morphine analgesia on NO mechanisms was studied during the primary and secondary sensitizations. The nitro-oxide synthase (NOS) activity was evaluated by the method of Home and Vincent, 1989, (identification of NADPH diaphorase). NOS and NADPH diaphorases are two double enzymes in cells with a synchronously changing activity. The NOS activity is in line with the level of the NO secretion. The enzyme was measured on a microdensitometer. The findings evidence an active involvement of NO mechanisms in the formation of primary and secondary hyperalgesia, and the injection of morphine caused a significant decrease in the count of NO-expressing neurons in the total number of cells with high and average activities of the enzyme.

[Reciprocal modulating effect of serotonin and dopamine on neurons of rat spinal ganglia].

It was found in experiments on isolated dorsal root ganglion neurons of rats that dopamine (10(-8)-10(-6) Mol/l) potentiated depolarizing neuronal responses evoked by injection of 5-hydroxytryptamine from micropipette. Similar concentrations of 5-hydroxytryptamine (10(-8)-10(-6) Mol/l) potentiated neuronal depolarizing responses evoked by dopamine. Potentiating action of monoamines on combined neuronal responses depended on concentration and was inhibited by antagonists of dopamine (haloperidol) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (deseril) receptors. This effect of monoamines had postsynaptic nature and was bound with an increase of Ca2+ and cAMP intracellular concentrations.

[Changes in the calcium action potentials of the neurons of the spinal ganglia in the rat in response to divalent cation substitution in the extracellular medium].

Rat dorsal root ganglion neurons were investigated by intracellular microelectrodes using current clamp technique. After elimination of sodium ions from the extracellular medium and addition of TEA pure "calcium" action potentials were recorded. Progressive and selective disturbance of such potentials was observed during continuous intracellular recording indicating a decrease in the calcium conductance while sodium and potassium conductances remained uneffected. Such a disturbance is supposed to be due to excessive influx of calcium, strontium or barium ions into the cell. The calcium component of the action potential was also dependent on the stimulation frequency, such dependence being different for strontium or barium solutions. Possible participation of current-dependent inactivation in the origin of this phenomenon is discussed.

[Analysis of the nature of responses of neurons of rat spinal ganglia evoked by the activation of GABA-B receptors].

The GABA application evoked fast picrotoxin-sensitive depolarization as well as slow depolarization with decreasing membrane conductivity and hyperpolarization with increasing membrane conductivity in the neurons of the rat dorsal root ganglion. The slow picrotoxin-resistant responses to GABA were initiated with phenibut. The phenibut effects were modulated by cAMP concentration and inhibited by the pertussis toxin. The reversal potential of the phenibut effects was equal to the potassium equilibrium one. The phenibut effects were reduced by increasing K+ and Ca+ extracellular concentration, and enhanced in presence of trifluoroperazine.

[Experimental diabetic neuropathy. Morphometric studies of spinal ganglia cells in short-term streptozotocin-induced diabetes].

Ganglion cells of both the left and right dorsal root ganglia L5 were investigated morphometrically in 8 diabetic rats 35 or 44 d after the administration of streptozotocin, as well as in 8 controls. The quantitative study included the analysis of mean neuron volume, maximal cell diameter, cell number per volume, by cell size class and the analysis of histograms. There were no changes in cell size. Whereas in experimental short-term diabetes the peripheral nerves demonstrate morphologic changes correlating to the biochemical abnormalities (reduced amino-acid uptake, decreased activity of Na+, K+-ATPase) no such correlations can be observed in the perikarya.
