Vechsler technique was applied to study 30 children with hemophilia aged 5 to 15 years. Tentative data showed no mental retardation in patients. Instead, their intellectual development was higher than that of control subjects (50 healthy adolescents). This issue should be further investigated and the data be used in education, choice of profession and occupation in these patients, i.e., their combined rehabilitation.

In order to promote the optimum exercise of the profession, the occupational group developed disciplinary standards of its own. To protect itself from socially improper procedures, from default and from its consequences, society developed standards of civil law. When a veterinarian is insufficiently equipped for adequate treatment of a patient, this patient will be referred to a veterinary surgeon who has acquired the necessary accomplishments in the section concerned; high standards of attainment will be imposed on this veterinarian. The fact that the referring veterinarian and the one to whom the patient was referred each retain their own responsibilities, is illustrated in examples. All this may result in a further improvement in quality of veterinary health care in the Netherlands.

This first part of a two-part article examines how occupational therapy was represented in the media during the formative years of the profession, 1917-1925. Through an examination of 44 articles published in The New York Times during these years, three common themes emerged: restoration of persons with disabilities to social usefulness, the many facets of occupational therapy, and achieving public recognition of occupational therapy. This analysis indicates that the media portrayed occupational therapy as a small but important profession primarily concerned with restoring patients to economic and social usefulness. This favorable portrayal was in keeping with the values of the times and may have contributed to promoting public acceptance of the profession.
Occupational therapy is a predominantly female profession; 93% to 95% of occupational therapists are women. The implications and ramifications of this reality have seldom been directly addressed. In this article, beliefs about balance, activity, environment, and autonomy are explored from the perspectives of occupational therapy, feminism, holistic health, and medicine. The assertion that occupational therapy has more in common philosophically with feminism and holistic health than it does with medicine is supported. This awareness provides a new framework for examining current issues of concern to the profession, such as support for purposeful activity, existence outside the mainstream of power holders, and problems and powers inherent in being seen as a women's profession. Recommendations are made that occupational therapists commit more money and energy to encourage, facilitate, and support female leadership; develop innovative strategies for keeping members who take time out to raise families informed; support more holistic and feminist reorganization of work settings; instill awareness of these issues in our students; and address our strengths as a women's profession. All occupational therapists must also confront their own anti-women prejudice.

This national Internet-based study tested occupational commitment in predicting RN intent to leave the nursing profession. Results showed that occupational commitment was increased by educational level and experience. Findings suggest opportunities for policy changes that may increase retention of registered nurses.
The present study examined biographical factors of occupational independence including any kind of nonemployed profession. Participants were 59 occupationally independent and 58 employed persons of different age (M = 36.3 yr.), sex, and profession. They were interviewed on variables like family influence, educational background, occupational role models, and critical events for choosing a particular type of occupational career. The obtained results show that occupationally independent people reported stronger family ties, experienced fewer restrictions of formal education, and remembered fewer negative role models than the employed people. Implications of these results are discussed.
Dental personnel are exposed to a high number of sensitizing chemicals such as acrylics, metals, anesthetics, fragrances, and antimicrobials. Although these chemicals usually cause allergic contact dermatitis, they also may cause immediate contact reactions. Usually the diagnostics involve patch testing, but prick testing needs to be performed to confirm immediate allergy. This article reviews the important causes and diagnostics of skin allergy in dental personnel. Special attention is given to the acrylates and methacrylates.
