[Scientometrics and bibliometrics of biomedical engineering periodicals and papers].

This investigation was made to reveal the current status, research trend and research level of biomedical engineering in Chinese mainland by means of scientometrics and to assess the quality of the four domestic publications by bibliometrics. We identified all articles of four related publications by searching Chinese and foreign databases from 1997 to 2001. All articles collected or cited by these databases were searched and statistically analyzed for finding out the relevant distributions, including databases, years, authors, institutions, subject headings and subheadings. The source of sustentation funds and the related articles were analyzed too. The results showed that two journals were cited by two foreign databases and five Chinese databases simultaneously. The output of Journal of Biomedical Engineering was the highest. Its quantity of original papers cited by EI, CA and the totality of papers sponsored by funds were higher than those of the others, but the quantity and percentage per year of biomedical articles cited by EI were decreased in all. Inland core authors and institutions had come into being in the field of biomedical engineering. Their research topics were mainly concentrated on ten subject headings which included biocompatible materials, computer-assisted signal processing, electrocardiography, computer-assisted image processing, biomechanics, algorithms, electroencephalography, automatic data processing, mechanical stress, hemodynamics, mathematical computing, microcomputers, theoretical models, etc. The main subheadings were concentrated on instrumentation, physiopathology, diagnosis, therapy, ultrasonography, physiology, analysis, surgery, pathology, method, etc.

[Biomathematical evaluation of morphometric data--presented illustrated on the example of the relationship between axon diameter and thickness of the myelin sheath. II. Nonlinear approximations].

After the process of measuring morphometrical characteristics performing empirical regressions as a first stage of data processing is treated in the foregoing part I of the paper. The morphometrical datas have to characterize a functional relationship between two variables X and Y, in the cases in question this is the connection between axon caliber and thickness of myelin sheat of nerve fibres. Based on the results of empirical regression the second data processing stage consists in performing nonlinear approximations of the measured courses by a suitable chosen mathematical function. For this purpose the generalized logistic function is chosen for a quantitative and qualitative description of the connection between axon caliber and myelin sheat thickness. The numerical procedure and the various possibilities of the ALGOL-program for performing the approximation task are sketched. The results of this second data processing stage are discussed under the aspects of information compressing, of automatic data processing, and of providing an objective basis for the further process of evaluation and interpretation.

A technique for monitoring respiratory responses in guinea pigs.

A piezoelectric crystal was used to detect respiration rates and pulmonary retractions of guinea pigs in response to intratracheal administration of histamine. Voltage output from the crystal was displayed on a recorder for visual processing and interfaced to a microcomputer for automatic data processing. Using intratracheal instillation of histamine, this system accurately reproduced the visual observations of respiratory responses in guinea pigs.

[Ultrastructural analysis of villous tumors of the large intestine (with the use of a computer)].

As a result of an analysis of the literature and the authors' electron microscopic data on 23 cases of rectal villous tumors, a standardized complex of ultrastructural features and their variants were determined. The said characteristics were used in the development of formal criteria for evaluation of the results of electron microscopic investigation of villous tumors displaying different degrees of dysplasia of the epithelium. A suitable algorithm of automatic data processing was worked out. The program in FORTRAN was read in a D3-28 mini-computer. The use of an automatic system for verification of diagnostically controversial data is suggested.
