In the urine of a ten-year-old girl mites of the species Tarsonemus minusculus (Can et Fanz.) and Cheyletus eruditus (Schr.) were found. A following examination of the bed dust from the bed of the child produced yet two further species of house dust mites Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trouess) and Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schr.). The demonstration of Tarsonemus minusculus in this area is new, just as the hitherto unknown male of this species.
A description of the prevention of pressure sores is only possible when the definition of pressure sores is clear. As with other disorders early identification of patients at risk is of great importance. Beside clinical experience, several systems of registration are available for early identification. Some of these systems are described in this article. Prevention is discussed by dividing activities into those aiming at diminishing pressure- and shear forces and those improving patient's general condition. Finally, the first symptoms of pressure sores and the significance of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention are mentioned.
The at-risk older patient must immediately be placed on a supersoft support, with heels protected with sheepskin boots. If reddened skin is found the next morning, the patient must be turned to a 30 degrees-oblique position on alternate sides every 2 hours. Any condition that greatly decreases frequency of involuntary movement or lowers critical arteriolar closing pressure is a risk factor. Without intervention, the probability that immobile patients will develop decubitus ulcers is 100%.
