Serum antibodies to plaque bacteria in subjects with dental caries and gingivitis.

Correlations were sought between indices of gingival inflammation and dental caries experience and serum antibody titers to five species of oral bacteria. The material comprised 53 young adult males. A statistically significant, negative correlation was observed between the antibody titer to a pool of Veillonella strains and dental caries experience. Multiple regression analyses failed to reveal significant associations between periodontal disease and serum antibody titers. However, the data suggested a combined association of the titers to the strains of Veillonella and a strain of Fusobacterium with the periodontal index.

[Alimentary intake of fluorides of artificially fed infants and effect on enamel tissue].

The dietary daily intake of fluorides in the first six months of lifetime has to be taken into special consideration. The slightly toxicological permissible limits of the fluorides can cause mottled enamels. The safe amount of the dietary daily intake for babies ranged up to 0.5 mg. By use of the food-stuff "MANASAN" prepared with fluoridated drinking water the daily intake increased up to 1.01 mg F-. In 150 7-8-years old children which in the first 4 month of lifetime got "MANASAN" prepared with fluoridated drinking water we found in 40% of the children mottled enamels, the fluorosis index scores (defined by DEAN) 0.4 respectively. The caries prevalence was by 0.85 DMF surfacer index.

Oral health status of 1500 university students in Toulouse France.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the oral health status among a population of students enrolled in the first year at the Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse (France), and to compare the results with those of similar investigations. METHODS: An epidemiologic survey of 1,500 students at the Centre for Preventive Medicine at Paul Sabatier University (UPS) will enable us to obtain the prevalence of certain variables such as DMFT, sugar consumption, tooth-brushing frequency, and mouthwash use, through a structured questionnaire and a standardised oral health examination. RESULTS: The Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index of these students was 4.4 (Standard Deviation = 3.72) (D = 1, M = 0.042 F = 3,454). Of the 1500 subjects, 27.6% smoke, while 43% eat sweets on a regular basis. The female students are more careful with their dental health (tooth-brushing frequency and mouthwash use are statistically significant (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Although the result of the DMFT index is lower in comparison to similar previous studies, a decrease in dental caries seems certain. The multifactorial knowledge of the caries aetiology motivates us to search for new, more sensitive indexes.

The effect of behaviour modification techniques on oral hygiene and gingival health of 10-year-old Canadian children.

Good oral hygiene habits in children are most desirable but are difficult to establish through conventional health education programmes. This study was designed to test the efficacy of a programme based on the use of several behaviour modification strategies. A sample of sixteen classes of 10-year-old children was randomly selected and assigned to either an experimental or control group. To monitor the oral health comparability of the groups, data were collected on caries experience, sugar intake and oral hygiene behaviour several times during the study period. The programme included the following elements: (1) dental examinations, (2) periodic visits by dental hygienists to the schools to teach brushing and flossing techniques and to monitor the quality of the children's performance, and (3) 'contracts' agreed by each child with the director of the programme and with one parent, to encourage commitment and to reinforce the desired behaviour. Loë and Silness plaque and gingival indices were used to measure the efficacy of the programme. For both indices, the difference between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups were statistically significant after a 4-month intensive phase of the programme. One year after all activities had stopped, the plaque index of the experimental group was still lower than that of the control group but insufficient to maintain a significant difference on the gingival index.

[Longitudinal studies on the inhibition of caries by amine fluoride within the framework of guided and supervised oral hygiene actions].

In a 3-year, 4-year and 5-year studies, the authors tested clinically and radiographically the caries-inhibiting efficiency of topically applied amine fluoride in defined groups (fluoride group with Elmex fluid and Elmex tooth-paste for unsupervised dental and oral hygiene at home, placebo group and control group). After the fifth study year, the caries increment in the children who were 11 years of age at this time had decreased by 30.6% (DMF/T index) and 32.1% (DMF/S index).
