[Effects of dissolved organic matter on napropamide adsorption and transport in soil system].

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can affect the environmental behaviors of herbicides in soil. Batch adsorption and column experiments were conducted to measure the sorption and leaching of napropamide in soils in the presence of DOM derived from green manure (GM) and sewage sludge (SS). DOM reduced sorption of napropamide significantly onto the tested soils, consequently which facilitated the transport of napropamide exhibited by soil column experiment. The sorption inhibition and the increased mobility of napropamide caused by DOM of GM origin were more significant than that of SS origin for the same soil. Within the selected concentration range of the napropamide and DOM in this study napropamide sorption isotherm could be described well by the Freundlich equation. In comparison with the control, DOM of GM and SS origins could reduce napropamide adsorption by 22.9% and 11.3% in the yellow-brown soil and 9.5% and 6.5% in the calcareous soil, respectively. Correspondingly, in the presence of DOM the leaching losses of napropamide in soil column increased by 73.42% and 26.87% in the yellow-brown soil and 43.54% and 28.29% in the calcareous soil, respectively.

Formation of environmental persistent free radicals in soil of ammunition demolition site: Roles of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene and heavy metals.

Environmental Persistent Free Radicals (EPFRs) are a particular type of contaminant present in soil. This study investigated the formation process, environmental behavior, and main influencing variables of EPFRs in soils contaminated with heavy metals and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) from an ammunition demolition site. The results showed that the concentration of total organic carbon (TOC) in the soil was negatively correlated with EPFRs (r = -0.29). In contrast, the content of TNT and copper was significantly positively correlated with EPFRs (r = 0.90 and 0.78, respectively), indicating that TNT acts as a precursor macromolecule in the formation of EPFRs in this type of contaminated soil. Transition metal Cu may be an essential carrier in EPFR production. In order to explore the possible formation mechanism of EPFRs, a simulation experiment was carried out under different temperature and light conditions. The results showed that the photolysis process of TNT was impacted by external energy sources such as heat and light. TNT was firstly adsorbed onto the surface of a transition metal (Cu), and then EPFRs were formed through further electron transfer. This is the first study to detect significant levels of EPFRs in the soil at ammunition demolition sites.

Metabolism of cyanide by Chinese vegetation.

Cyanide is a high-volume production chemical and the most commonly used leaching reagent for gold and silver extraction. Its environmental behavior and fate is of significant concern because it is a highly toxic compound. Vascular plants possess an enzyme system that detoxifies cyanide by converting it to the amino acid asparagine. This paper presents an investigation of the potential of Chinese vegetation to degrade cyanide. Detached leaves (1.5 g fresh weight) from 28 species of 23 families were kept in glass vessel with 100 ml of aqueous solution spiked with potassium cyanide at 23.5 degrees C for 28 h. Cyanide concentrations ranged from 0.83 to 1.0 CN mg l(-1). The disappearance of cyanide from the aqueous solution was analyzed spectrophotometrically. The fastest cyanide removal was by Chinese elder, Sambucus chinensis, with a removal capacity of 8.8 mg CN kg(-1) h(-1), followed by upright hedge-parsley (Torilis japonica) with a value of 7.5 mg CN kg(-1) h(-1). The lowest removal capacity had the snow-pine tree (Credrus deodara (Roxb.) Loud). Results from this investigation indicated that a wide range of plant species is able to efficiently metabolize cyanide. Therefore, cyanide elimination with plants seems to be a feasible option for cleaning soils and water contaminated by cyanide from gold and silver mines or from other sources.

Short-term distributions of reduced sulfur compounds in the ambient air surrounding a large landfill facility.

In order to explore the environmental behavior of reduced sulfur compounds (RSC) as malodorous components emitted from diverse source processes, the distribution characteristics of four sulfur (S) compounds - hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), dimethyl sulfide (DMS: (CH3)2S), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS: (CH3)2S2) - were investigated in a municipal landfill area. In the course of this study, their ambient concentration levels were measured during two time periods from 13 individual spots selected as a function of distance from the center of the landfill site. The results generally indicated the absolute dominance of H2S over the other S compounds investigated (up to 5 km radius) such that their mean values were found as 1415 (H2S), 148 (DMS), 20.6 (CH3SH), and 14.4 ppt (DMDS). When our data were compared in terms of either varying distance from the source or relationship with meteorological conditions, the H2S data sets were most evident to reflect the potential effects of strong source processes in the landfill environment, relative to other S gases (or to volatile organic compounds measured concurrently). The results of this study further indicated the relatively good correspondence between the measured H2S concentration level and humans' intuitive sensory of odor and nuisance.

The exceedance patterns of air quality criteria: a case study of ozone and nitrogen dioxide in Seoul, Korea between 1990 and 2000.

In this study, the environmental behavior of two major airborne pollutants, ozone and nitrogen dioxide, was investigated with respect to their exceedance patterns of air quality criteria. For this purpose, we used data sets collected from a total of 31 air quality monitoring stations dispersed across the Seoul metropolitan city between 1990 and 2000. In the case of NO(2), the frequency of hourly exceedance data sets exhibited little changes in the early 90s. However, it increased dramatically after 1995, probably in compliance with a rapid increase in the total number of automobiles. Likewise, the daily exceedance of O(3) in the early 90s was not significant, approaching 100 cases (except in 1994). However, its total quantity began to surpass 300 cases since around 1996. Comparison of those exceedance data was also made among spatially divided data groups. In the case of NO(2), the occurrence of exceedance data was dominated by the western part of the city in both magnitude and frequency. On the other hand, that for O(3) was characterized by notably strong occurrences in the eastern counterpart. The overall results of our analysis of the NO(2) and O(3) exceedance data sets indicate an inextricable linkage between the two pollutants in association with geographical and meteorological factors.

[Assessment of occupational exposures to industrial hazardous substances. IV. A proposed method based on one-sided tolerance limits].

Occupational exposures to potentially hazardous substances may vary considerably because of interday environmental behavioral fluctuations in the contaminant concentration. Such occupational exposures including those of non-monitored days can be theoretically evaluated by the following three ways: 1) assessment of geometric mean and geometric standard deviation, 2) assessment of arithmetic mean, and 3) assessment of upper limits of daily exposure distribution. In our previous report, an evaluation method on 95% upper limit or arithmetic mean of exposures was proposed. The method is useful, particularly, in case where only one or two days are being monitored, but may provide an approximate estimate because of statistical assumption. A sampling and decision scheme using one-sided tolerance limits (OTL) proposed by Tuggle (1982) can precisely evaluate the upper limits of exposures. However, many cases would be evaluated as "no decision," unless the sample size is extremely large in number. We developed a revised method based on OTL for assessment of occupational exposures. The characteristic features of this method can be summarized as follows: 1. Upper limits of lognormally distributed 8-h exposure concentrations can be evaluated in comparison with an established standard. 2. A third OTL factor was introduced into Tuggle's scheme in which two OTL factors were used. A comparison between the upper limits of exposures and the standard can be made at 50% confidence level with the factor. The factor was calculated using non-central t-distribution. 3. The usefulness of the third OTL factor in the assessment of occupational exposures was confirmed by examining the performance characteristics of the method.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Fate of nonylphenol ethoxylates and their metabolites in two Dutch estuaries: evidence of biodegradation in the field.

The environmental behavior of nonylphenol ethoxylates (A9PEO) and their metabolites was investigated in field studies in the two Dutch estuaries Western Scheldt and the Rhine estuary. Using liquid chromatography-electrospray mass spectrometry (LC-ES-MS) analysis after solid-phase extraction, A9PEO, nonylphenol (NP), and the carboxylated metabolites (A9PEC) were determined in surface water and sediments. Maximum dissolved concentrations of 2.3, 0.9, and 8.1 microg L(-1), respectively, were found. In sediments, maximum concentrations of 242 and 1080 ng g(-1) for A9PEO and NP were observed. In almost half of the sediment samples, concentrations of A9PEC in sediments were below the detection limit. Occasionally relatively high values were observed, with a maximum of 239 ng g(-1). Metabolites of the carboxy alkylphenoxy ethoxy acetic acids (CAPEC) type could not be detected in any of the sediment or water samples. In the Scheldt estuary, dissolved concentration profiles showed nonconservative behaviorfor all detected compound groups. While A9PEO and NP concentrations strongly decreased along the salinity gradient, this decrease was weaker for the A9PEC metabolites. The increasing concentration ratio of A9PEC/A9PEO clearly illustratesthe important role that aerobic biodegradation plays in the estuarine fate of these compounds. It is concluded that the oxidative hydrolytic degradation pathway is the main degradation route in this nonstratified estuary. At high salinities, where concentrations drop to background levels of around 50 ng L(-1), this ratio decreases to about unity. Simple model calculations show that this can be explained if continuous diffuse discharges (e.g. from the intensive shipping in the estuary) are assumed. For the stratified Rhine estuary the water concentration profiles are less pronounced, possibly due to more complicated and turbulent water flows and point sources from the Rotterdam harbors.

Evaluation of the impact of fuel hydrocarbons and oxygenates on groundwater resources.

The environmental behavior of fuel oxygenates (other than methyl tert-butyl ether [MTBE]) is poorly understood because few data have been systematically collected and analyzed. This study evaluated the potential for groundwater resource contamination by fuel hydrocarbons (FHCs) and oxygenates (e.g., tert-butyl alcohol [TBA], tertamyl methyl ether [TAME], diisopropyl ether [DIPE], ethyl tert-butyl ether [ETBE], and MTBE) by examining their occurrence, distribution, and spatial extent in groundwater beneath leaking underground fuel tank (LUFT) facilities, focusing on data collected from over 7200 monitoring wells in 868 LUFT sites from the greater Los Angeles, CA, region. Excluding the composite measure total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHG), TBA has the greatestsite maximum (geometric mean) groundwater concentration among the study analytes; therefore, its presence needs to be confirmed at LUFT sites so that specific cleanup strategies can be developed. The alternative ether oxygenates (DIPE, TAME, and ETBE) are less likely to be detected in groundwater beneath LUFT facilities in the area of California studied and when detected are present at lower dissolved concentrations than MTBE, benzene, or TBA. Groundwater plume length was used as an initial indicator of the threat of contamination to drinking water resources. Approximately 500 LUFT sites were randomly selected and analyzed. The results demonstrate MTBE to pose the greatest problem, followed by TBA and benzene. The alternative ether oxygenates were relatively localized and indicated lesser potential for groundwater resource contamination. However, all indications suggest the alternative ether oxygenates would pose groundwater contamination threats similar to MTBE if their scale of usage is expanded. Plume length data suggest that in the absence of a completely new design and construction of the underground storage tank (UST) system, an effective management strategy may involve placing greater emphasis on UST program for ensuring adequate enforcement and compliance with existing UST regulations.

Socioeconomic, environmental, demographic and behavioral factors associated with occurrence of diarrhea in young children in the Republic of Congo.

This study is the result of a cross-sectional survey undertaken in five regions of the Republic of Congo. A sample of 612 women having children under 3 years of age was interviewed to determine the socioeconomic, environmental, demographic and behavioral factors associated with the occurrence of diarrhea in young children. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine which variables predict the occurrence of diarrhea in a multivariable context. Most of the statistically significant variables were those suggesting behaviorally mediated modes of transmission. These include: type of weaning food fed to the child, maternal age, sex of the child, maternal sickness and method of refuse disposal. Male children had a more than two-fold odds of experiencing recent diarrhea than did female children among those greater than 1 year of age. Although breastfeeding status was not statistically significantly associated with diarrheal disease, children under 1 year of age who were already weaned had a greater odds of disease than those who were still breasted. Due to the pattern of extended breastfeeding in this population, this relationship was difficult to assess. Urban residence also was highly associated with diarrheal disease occurrence. Urban residence is likely to reflect a host of socioeconomic, environmental and behavioral factors. These findings underscore the potential impact of educational interventions on the occurrence of diarrheal disease among young children.

A clinician's view of the molecular genetics of age-related maculopathy.

Molecular genetic studies of age-related maculopathy (ARM), including family-based linkage studies and case-control association studies, have yielded valuable insights into the risks of developing this condition and potential disease-causing mechanisms. Variants in the complement factor H gene and LOC387715 have consistently been shown to be major risk factors for ARM. Additional genes, and environmental, behavioral, and dietary factors, also play a major role in ARM pathogenesis. The present studies are a starting point toward our understanding of the causes of ARM and for future therapeutic studies. As clinicians, we can already begin to use our knowledge of ARM genetics to counsel and care for our patients at risk.

Consensus statement for the prevention and management of pain in the newborn.

OBJECTIVE: To develop evidence-based guidelines for preventing or treating neonatal pain and its adverse consequences. Compared with older children and adults, neonates are more sensitive to pain and vulnerable to its long-term effects. Despite the clinical importance of neonatal pain, current medical practices continue to expose infants to repetitive, acute, or prolonged pain. DESIGN: Experts representing several different countries, professional disciplines, and practice settings used systematic reviews, data synthesis, and open discussion to develop a consensus on clinical practices that were supported by published evidence or were commonly used, the latter based on extrapolation of evidence from older age groups. A practical format was used to describe the analgesic management for specific invasive procedures and for ongoing pain in neonates. RESULTS: Recognition of the sources of pain and routine assessments of neonatal pain should dictate the avoidance of recurrent painful stimuli and the use of specific environmental, behavioral, and pharmacological interventions. Individualized care plans and analgesic protocols for specific clinical situations, patients, and health care settings can be developed from these guidelines. By clearly outlining areas where evidence is not available, these guidelines may also stimulate further research. To use the recommended therapeutic approaches, clinicians must be familiar with their adverse effects and the potential for drug interactions. CONCLUSION: Management of pain must be considered an important component of the health care provided to all neonates, regardless of their gestational age or severity of illness.

Defining, measuring, and predicting impulsive aggression: a heuristic model.

Aggression research does not lack data--it lacks a model for integrating data. One of the problems confronting aggression researchers is the extensive body of multidisciplinary data that is difficult to synthesize to generate new directions in research. This paper proposes one solution that starts by asking "what is the minimal number of categories of concepts and measurements which are necessary to describe a person?". The answer is four categories of concepts: biological; cognitive; behavioral; environmental (physical and social). One way of many for integrating these four categories of concepts is a proposed discipline neutral heuristic model that is used herein to compare two different research approaches to the study of impulsive aggression. This comparison identifies clearly the differences in the two approaches with regard to different emphases among the four categories of constructs for each program. Using the model an example of common ground between the two approaches is sought as a basis for extending aggression research. The main conclusion of one of the research programs was that central nervous arousal is related to impulsive aggression. This program demonstrated that phenytoin will reduce impulsive aggressive acts and has an effect on CNS arousal. The other research program on impulsive aggression has been at the forefront in demonstrating the well established inverse relationship between serotonin levels and aggression. The comparison resulted in the suggestion that both serotonin and phenytoin may relate to a common neurochemical substrate which interacts in part to control CNS arousal, especially at the cortical level. The proposed heuristic model made obvious the need to use synthesizing concepts (e.g. information processing or language) which can interrelate multidisciplinary concepts and data from different research programs within the four categories of constructs when comparing interdisciplinary research.

Pregnancy outcome for nomadic Turkana pastoralists of Kenya.

The outcome of an individual pregnancy is a key component of overall reproductive success and is strongly influenced by environmental, behavioral, and biological variation within populations. This prospective study examined the outcomes of 68 pregnancies among nomadic Turkana of Kenya from July 1993 to July 1994. A total of 12 women experienced pregnancy losses, and 3 women experienced live births with a subsequent perinatal death. The following characteristics are associated with increased risk for experiencing a fetal or perinatal death: severe morbidity episodes, shorter nonpregnant intervals, lower third-trimester weight, higher third-trimester summed skinfolds but limited third-trimester reduction in summed skinfolds, and higher activity levels late in gestation. Turkana newborns measured within 48 hr of birth (n = 19) weighed an average of 2,860 +/- 640 g and had a mean ponderal index of 2.72 +/- 0.46. Variation in birth weight was predicted by preterm delivery, delivery during the wet season, and maternal morbidity levels. Birth length averaged 50.8 +/- 6.8 cm and was positively influenced by full term delivery, better maternal health, and birth during the dry season. These results suggest complicated pathways linking the physical environment, subsistence requirements, heterogeneity in maternal fitness, behavior, and pregnancy outcome. The results augment the larger picture of reproductive success for Turkana nomads who live in a highly variable savanna environment.

Postcranial robusticity in Homo. I: Temporal trends and mechanical interpretation.

Temporal trends in postcranial robusticity within the genus Homo are explored by comparing cross-sectional diaphyseal and articular properties of the femur, and to a more limited extent, the humerus, in samples of Recent and earlier Homo. Using both theoretical mechanical models and empirical observations within Recent humans, scaling relationships between structural properties and bone length are developed. The influence of body shape on these relationships is considered. These scaling factors are then used to standardize structural properties for comparisons with pre-Recent Homo (Homo sp. and H. erectus, archaic H. sapiens, and early modern H. sapiens). Results of the comparisons lead to the following conclusions: 1) There has been a consistent, exponentially increasing decline in diaphyseal robusticity within Homo that has continued from the early Pleistocene through living humans. Early modern H. sapiens are closer in shaft robusticity to archaic H. sapiens than they are to Recent humans. The increase in diaphyseal robusticity in earlier Homo is a result of both medullary contraction and periosteal expansion relative to Recent humans. 2) There has been no similar temporal decline in articular robusticity within Homo--relative femoral head size is similar in all groups and time periods. Thus, articular to shaft proportions are different in pre-Recent and Recent Homo. 3) These findings are most consistent with a mechanical explanation (declining mechanical loading of the postcranium), that acted primarily through developmental rather than genetic means. The environmental (behavioral) factors that brought about the decline in postcranial robusticity in Homo are ultimately linked to increases in brain size and cultural-technological advances, although changes in robusticity lag behind changes in cognitive capabilities.

The pesticide module of the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM): testing and sensitivity analysis of selected algorithms for pesticide fate and surface runoff.

The Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) is a one-dimensional, numerical model for simulating water movement and chemical transport under a variety of management and weather scenarios at the field scale. The pesticide module of RZWQM includes detailed algorithms that describe the complex interactions between pesticides and the environment. We have simulated a range of situations with RZWQM, including foliar interception and washoff of a multiply applied insecticide (chlorpyrifos) to growing corn, and herbicides (alachlor, atrazine, flumetsulam) with pH-dependent soil sorption, to examine whether the model appears to generate reasonable results. The model was also tested using chlorpyrifos and flumetsulam for the sensitivity of its predictions of chemical fate and water and pesticide runoff to various input parameters. The model appears to generate reasonable representations of the fate and partitioning of surface- and foliar-applied chemicals, and the sorption of weakly acidic or basic pesticides, processes that are becoming increasingly important for describing adequately the environmental behavior of newer pesticides. However, the kinetic sorption algorithms for charged pesticides appear to be faulty. Of the 29 parameters and variables analyzed, chlorpyrifos half-life, the Freundlich adsorption exponent, the fraction of kinetic sorption sites, air temperature, soil bulk density, soil-water content at 33 kPa suction head and rainfall were most sensitive for predictions of chlorpyrifos residues in soil. The latter three inputs and the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil and surface crusts were most sensitive for predictions of surface water runoff and water-phase loss of chlorpyrifos. In addition, predictions of flumetsulam (a weak acid) runoff and dynamics in soil were sensitive to the Freundlich equilibrium adsorption constant, soil pH and its dissociation coefficient.

Prevention policy: perspectives on the critical interaction between research and policy.

Prevention researchers should join political and professional efforts to maximize coverage for validated preventive services and programs as part of health care reform. We have a useful framework from Healthy People 2000, the Guide to Clinical Preventive Services, and preventive clinical trials. We must anticipate the clinical and community-based questions for which prevention research can provide needed answers. Cancer prevention trials, serum cholesterol and prostate-specific antigen screening, prevention of Helicobacter-related diseases, and comprehensive health promotion strategies for older adults are excellent examples of policy-laden research challenges. To assure future prevention research capability, we must invest in training in epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral, environmental, and health services research.

Genes, environment, and exercise.

The definition of the term "environment" has broadened in the past 40 years to include knowledge generated from sequencing genes. Studies on animal responses to the environment have expanded to include selective lifestyle behaviors. Environmental lifestyle components interact with susceptibility genes to pass a threshold of biological significance such that a disease requires clinical treatment. Examples of environmental-gene interactions producing cystic fibrosis and asthma are described. The contributing role of physical inactivity to the epidemic of type 2 diabetes is presented with some of its underlying effectors. A lack of contractile activity by skeletal muscle is associated with less GLUT4 protein in the sarcolemma and a lower glucose uptake into the muscle. The pathways by which contractile activity signals an increase in glucose uptake differs from insulin signaling, but is remarkably similar to how hypoxia stimulates muscle to increase its glucose uptake.

Risk factors of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. The Casteldaccia Eye Study.

A case-control study was planned as a part of the Casteldaccia Eye Study in order to investigate about risk factors of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. Cases were 44 subjects with glaucoma or intraocular pressure of 24 mm Hg or more. Controls were 220 subjects with intraocular pressure of 20 mm Hg or less and no signs of glaucoma. A number of environmental, behavioral, systemic and ocular variables were studied. Among the others we investigated the following: sunlight exposure, smoking, alcohol intake, pregnancies, systemic hypertension, diabetes, use of corticosteroids, refractive status, anterior chamber depth, lens nuclear sclerosis, iris color and texture. After univariate analysis the use of ocular corticosteroids and antibiotics, myopia, shallow anterior chamber and myopic macular degeneration were associated with ocular hypertension or glaucoma. However, the logistic regression showed that only the use of ocular corticosteroids (odds ratio = 7.79) and the myopia (odds ratio = 5.56) were independently associated.
