Incorporation of crystallographic temperature factors in the statistical analysis of protein tertiary structures.

A method to identify statistically significant differences between equivalent atoms in two closely related protein X-ray crystallographic structures is described. This method uses the linear relationship found between the logarithm of the distance between equivalent atoms and their mean temperature factor to determine, by linear regression, the expected difference and variance.

Self-efficacy perspective on oral health among Turkish pre-adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between toothbrushing and dietary self-efficacy and oral health status and behaviour related to it among Turkish pre-adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of Turkish school pre-adolescents aged 10 to 12 (n = 611) by oral health examinations (OHE) and self-administered health behaviour questionnaire (PHBQ). The PHBQ, including new Toothbrushing (TBSES), and modified Dietary Self-Efficacy (DSES), was designed to survey pre-adolescents' oral, dietary and general hygiene behaviour by psychosocial factors. An OHE based on World Health Organization criteria was implemented. The participation rate was 97% (n = 591), and 95% (n = 584) for PHBQ and OHE. Multiple linear regression analysis, descriptive statistics, factor and item analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, chi-square test, and Student t-test were applied. RESULTS: Pre-adolescents, mostly with regular toothbrushing habits (69% at least once a day) and high levels of irregular dental visits (79%) had as their mean DMFS figure 3.77 +/- 3.37. Principal component analysis for TBSES and DSES revealed that four factors met the Kaiser Criteria, accounting for 50.2% of total variance. Scales with good internal consistency and test-retest stability were associated with professionally (DMFS) and self-assessed dental health (p < 0.05). A similar tendency appeared between self-assessed gingival health and DSES (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Self-efficacy beliefs were associated with oral health and related behaviour among pre-adolescents. Further research is needed for implementation of scales to enhance oral health.

[Informative value of immunologic indicators at different periods of acute myocardial infarction].

To elucidate the mechanisms responsible for reorganization in the immune system in patients in the acute period of myocardial parameters for immune status were examined in 40 patients with acute myocardial infarction. The findings were processed by statistic methods of factor analysis. The value of factor exercise with the same parameters varied with the period of the disease. On the first day of myocardial infarction, immune complex concentrations were found to be mostly affected by this process. On day 7, chemiluminescence underwent changes, so did circulating antibody titers on day 30. Evidently, it is advisable to bear in mind the aforementioned relationships while studying the effect of immune responses on the course and prognosis of myocardial infarction.

[Study of 187 portacaval anastomoses. Statistical analysis of prognostic factors. II. Comparative study of the results of anastomoses with and without interruption of the portal trunk. Discussion].

The authors report a comparative retrospective study of 124 end-to-side portal anastomoses and 63 side-to-side anastomoses. The influence of a certain number of clinical and pathological factors on mortality and immediate and long-term survival, were statistically verified. The quality of the functional result result was analysed in each group of operated patients. Comparison of the results of trunkular anastomoses with or without interruption of the portal vein, showed both as regards, post-operative and late mortality, that the functional results were definitely in favor of end-to-side anastomosis. Thus side-to-side anastomoses gave 40,4 p. 100 of good results and 59,6 average or poor results, as against 60 p. 100 gave rise to portal systemic encephalopathy in 17 p. 100 of cases as against 35 p. 100 in the case of the side-to-side anastomosis. Only the sub-group of operated patients with hepatic vein thrombosis seemed to benefit from side-to-side anastomosis.

Statistical analysis of the factors affecting the outcome of extradural haematomas: 115 cases.

115 traumatic extradural haematoma cases who were treated surgically at Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty Neurosurgery Department between 1987 and 1992 are evaluated. When factors affecting the outcome were examined, a strong correlation was found between the result and Glasgow coma scale (GCS) (p < 0.00001). The existence of a fracture, the interval between onset of haematoma symptoms and intervention and the existence of an intracerebral haematoma together with contusion accompanying intradural haematoma, affect the outcome in a negative direction. There was no statistical correlation between the outcome and the age of patient, localization of the haematoma and aetiology.

Risk factors in retinopathy of prematurity. a multivariate statistical analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze risk factors in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four hundred forty-seven surviving very-low-birth-weight infants (birth weight </=1,500 g) were enrolled in a retrospective study. Clinical data underwent multivariate analysis using stepwise logistic forward regression. RESULTS: For 402 of the babies a complete dataset of 38 possible risk factors was available. Multivariate analysis showed 10 factors to be independently significant variables. Low birth weight, low gestational age, artificial ventilation for more than 7 days, high volume of blood transfusion and surfactant therapy were risk factors associated with higher rates of ROP. Necrotizing enterocolitis, maternal pre-eclampsia, lung maturation by antepartum betamethasone application, vitamin E and phototherapy were accompanied by a lower incidence of ROP. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms several risk factors recognized by previous statistical analysis. In addition, this study reveals maternal pre-eclampsia, which is associated with chronic intrauterine stress, as a statistically independent factor and as having an influence on the incidence of ROP.
