Hospitals can cut materials costs by managing supply pipeline.

Materials management costs are affected by all the members of the supply pipeline--the manufacturer, the distributor, and the hospital. Hospitals need to develop closer relationships with distributors. By reducing the number of distributors it deals with and by shifting part of its inventory to a principal vendor, the hospital can reduce its inventory and cut materials management costs.

Building an efficient supply chain.

Realizing at last that supply chain management can produce efficiencies and save costs, hospitals are beginning to adopt practices from other industries, such as the concept of extended supply chains, to improve product flow. They're also investing in enterprise planning resource software, radio frequency identification and other technologies, using quality data to drive standardization and streamlining processes.

Computer provides definite linen distribution and control mechanism.

For the past 10 years or so, large laundries have been concerned with productivity. While productivity has increased 10 to 20 percent, the linen replacement cost in these same laundries has more than doubled. It will not suffice for these laundries to point toward the hospitals they serve and imply that linen service and control is solely a hospital management problem. As long as proven technology is available, these laundries have an inherent responsibility to provide hospital management with the data necessary to pinpoint and correct linen consumption and replacement problems.
