The essential oil of Origanum vulgare L. ssp. vulgare growing wild in vilnius district (Lithuania).

The plants of wild Origanum vulgare L. ssp. vulgare were collected in 10 localities of Vilnius district (Lithuania) in 1995-1999. The main constituents of the essential oils from 8 localities were beta-ocimene (14.9-21.6%), germacrene D (10.0-16.2), beta-caryophyllene (10.8- 15.7%) and sabinene (6.6- 4.2%). The essential oils from two localities contained only three above compounds as major components: germacrene D, beta-ocimene and sabinene or beta-caryophyllene, beta-ocimene and germacrene D. Three chemotypes of essential oils were identified. The main chemotype was beta-ocimene germacrene D-beta-caryophyllene. The terpenic hydrocarbons made up 52.8-80.6% of the essential oils. The 42 identified components made up 85.6-98.0% of the essential oil.

Estimation of metal uptake efficiencies from precipitation in mosses in Lithuania

The main sources contributing to heavy metal content in mosses in Lithuania were examined by a comparison of heavy metal concentrations in moss and corresponding deposition levels calculated from bulk deposition analysis. Bulk deposition was collected in open areas as well as under the canopy of trees. Uptake efficiencies in moss were calculated for Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, V and Zn. All elements in moss except Pb and Cd appeared to be more or less influenced by sources other than air pollution. The general order of this influence on the heavy metal content in moss was observed as follows: Ni < V < Cr < Zn < Fe < Mn. The contents of Mn and Zn in moss were greatly influenced by leaching from the canopy while Pb was the only element which showed a net metal retention by the canopy. Concentrations of Fe and Cr in moss were dominating due to contribution from soil dust.

Biological control of trichostrongylid infections in calves on pasture in Lithuania using Duddingtonia flagrans, a nematode-trapping fungus.

The effect on the pasture contamination level with infective trichostrongylid larvae by feeding the nematode-trapping fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans at two dose levels to first time grazing calves was examined in Lithuania. Thirty heifer-calves, aged 3-6 months, were divided into three comparable groups, A, B and C. Each group was turned out on a 1.07 ha paddock (a, b and c). The paddocks were naturally contaminated with infective trichostrongylid larvae from infected cattle grazing the previous year. Fungal material was fed to the animals daily during a two month period starting 3 weeks after turnout. Groups A and B were given 10(6) and 2.5x10(5) chlamydospores per kg of live weight per day, respectively, while group C served as a non-dosed control group. Every two weeks the heifers were weighed and clinically inspected. On the same dates, faeces, blood and grass samples were collected. From mid-July onwards, the number of infective larvae in grass samples increased markedly (P<0.05)on paddock c, whereas low numbers of infective larvae were observed on paddocks a and b grazed by the fungus treated groups. However, the results indicate that administering fungal spores at a dose of 2.5x10(6)chlamydospores per kg live weight per day did not significantly prevent parasitism in calves, presumably due to insufficient suppression of developing infective larvae in the faeces. In contrast, a dose of 10(6) chlamydospores per kg lowered the parasite larval population on the pasture, reduced pepsinogen levels (P<0.05), and prevented calves from developing parasitosis.

Awareness and practice of patient's rights law in Lithuania.

BACKGROUND: Patient's rights law is intended to secure good medical practice, but it can also serve to improve understanding between patients and medical staff if both were aware of their rights. METHODS: Awareness and practice of the new patient's rights law in Lithuanian health care institutions was explored through a survey of 255 medical staff and 451 patients in the four Kaunas city medical units in 2002. Participation rates were 74% and 66%, respectively. RESULTS: Majority of the medical staff (85%) and little over one half of the patients (56%) had heard or read about the Law on Patient's Rights (p < 0.001). Only 50% of professionals compared to 69% of patients thought information for patients about diagnosis, treatment results and alternative treatments is necessary (p < 0.001). A clear discrepancy was indicated between physicians informing the patients (80%-98% of physicians) and patients actually knowing (37%-54%) their treatment prognosis, disease complications or possible alternative treatment methods. CONCLUSION: These results suggest a need for awareness-raising among patients to improve the practical implementation of the Patient's Rights Law in Lithuania.

Sex attractants for six clearwing and tineid species (Lepidoptera, Sesiidae and Tineidae) from Kazakhstan and Lithuania.

Sex attractants for 3 Sesiidae and 3 Tineidae moth species in West-Kazakhstan and Lithuania were discovered by field screening tests of (3Z,13Z)-, (3E,13Z)- and (2E,13Z)-octadecadien-1-ols and their acetates as well as of some binary mixtures of these compounds. Total amount of chemicals was 0.3 mg/dispenser. Males of Synanthedon serica were attracted by a 5:5 mixture of 3E,13Z-18:OAc and 2E,13Z-18:OAc, Chamaesphecia bibioniformis by a 9:1 mixture of 3Z,13Z-18:OAc and 3E,13Z-18:OAc, Paranthrene tabaniformis by a 1:9 mixture of 3Z,13Z-18:OH and 3E,13Z-18:OH, Tinea nonimella by a 1:9 mixture of 3E,13Z-18:OH and 2E,13Z-18:OH, Monopis monachella by a 1:9 mixture of 3Z,13Z-18:OH and 2E,13Z-18:OH, and Nemaxera betulinella by a 9:1 mixture of 2E,13Z-18:OAc and the corresponding alcohol. The periods of attraction to the traps were registered for males of S. serica and Ch. bibioniformis and were found to occur at 15-18 and 15-17 o'clock, local time, respectively.

[Pathology of cardiovascular system among hemodialysis patients in Lithuania].

During period of February to July 2002 the data of 602 hemodialysis patients were collected from 20 dialysis centres in Lithuania in order to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors. In 34.9 percent of patients ischemic heart disease was diagnosed (myocardial infarction prior to hemodialysis, angina pectoris according to Rose's questionnaire, scar changes in ECG and/or hypokinesis zones in echocardiograms). Men were prevailing among the patients. The largest number of patients with ischaemic heart disease was on dialysis for one year, which proves that the patients start dialysis with the presence of pathology of cardiovascular system. Out of all patients, 45.3 percent were hypertensive. The majority of dialysis patients demonstrated risk factors for cardiovascular diseases: about 80 percent hypertrophy of the left heart ventricle, about a half of the patients were smokers, mainly men. Thirty-one percent of patients had overweight, 12.5 percent were obese. A half of the surveyed patients were not examined by means of echocardiography, one third did not undergo radiographic examination of thorax. It demonstrates insufficient attention to cardiovascular pathology as well as breach of the quality requirements for dialysis according to the order No 116 issued by the Ministry of Health March 15, 1999.

Antibiotic resistance in Shigella and Salmonella in a region of Lithuania.

To gather information on the antibiotic susceptibility of Shigella and Salmonella in the Baltic countries, 98 Shigella and 100 Salmonella isolates collected consecutively in 1994 were examined. All Shigella isolates were resistant to at least two of 12 antibacterial agents: 100% were resistant to oxytetracycline, 92% to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, 64% to chloramphenicol, and 64% to ampicillin. Five different resistance patterns were observed.

Survival from colorectal carcinoma in HNPCC families as compared to the general population in Lithuania--initial results.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer in HNPCC appears to have a better prognosis than sporadic colorectal cancer. Selection bias, screening, early intervention and treatment hamper efforts to confirm such a hypothesis. AIM: To evaluate survival rates in Lithuanian HNPCC patients with colorectal cancer and compare them with survival rates of sporadic cases arising from the general population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 8 patients from 6 Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal carcinoma (HNPCC) families, 3 patients had HMSH2 and 5 patients had HMLH1 mutations, who were diagnosed between 1995 and 1999. HNPCC patients characteristic (age and stage) were used to trace the records of the Cancer Registry at the same period to identify the cases corresponding the required criteria. Above 263 patients were found--106 at stage II and 157 at stage III. RESULTS: The 10-year survival was 87.5% in the HNPCC study group compared with only 44.8% in the general population group. Patients with the MSH2 gene mutation were at a greater risk of developing a second primary cancer independent from any cancer prevention and screening programs. Survival rates were also prolonged even with a greater numbers of extra-colonic cancers diagnosed at different stages. CONCLUSION: HNPCC patients with confirmed MSH2 or MLH1 mutations diagnosed with stages II and III CRC have a good 10-year survival prognoses compared with those from the general population.
