[Distribution of praevalent morphological symptoms of the oral complex in 600 Jena school children in dependence of age and sex (author's transl)].

In this study praevalence and stage of some selected symptoms within the orofacial complex were investigated in 600 normal children living in Jena (300 boys and 300 girls). The first problem of this study consisted in registering the biological variability of 6 symptoms (bit abnormality, protrusion of the lower lip, diastema, palatal height, size of the tongue, fissured tongue) in a normal group, and secondly to find correlations between these symptoms. The results are listed for the age groups according to sex. The supposed causes that may lead to the development of these symptoms are discussed. Our results were compared with those of the literature. Difficulties and incompletion are involved in recording of the mentioned symptoms and their value of diagnosis.

The dentist and the dentition.

The role of the dentist on interdisciplinary teams has expanded from therapeutics to comprehensive diagnosis, relying heavily on expertise in anatomy, pathology, and genetics. Along with this expansion has come a need for other health professionals to understand the diagnostic side of dentistry. Since alteration of tooth structure and eruption patterns are a significant component of many birth defects, it behooves those interested in such problems to become acquainted with the material in the remainder of this volume.

[Opocephalic triocephalus in a calf].

This describes the malformation in the skull of a newborn calf. The facial bones are missing, the ears seem to be placed at the upper end of the neck. One single eye is placed on a pillar in the middle, which is about five centimeters long, protruding forward; the mouth, which has the shape of an anus-like opening, is beneath the eye.

Pediatric oral pathology. Soft tissue and periodontal conditions.

Pediatric patients can present with various intraoral lesions that require accurate diagnosis, treatment or reassurance, and possible referral for a dental evaluation. Periodic review of oral soft-tissue pathology can help the medical team to easily recognize common and rare abnormalities affecting children. Recent years have brought new insights into the causes and treatment of periodontal diseases of children, making prevention or treatment of many formerly untreatable conditions possible. Early detection of these oral conditions may be life saving.

Partial duplication of the face: case report and review.

Complete or partial facial duplication is a rare congenital malformation. A spectrum of structural abnormalities varying in degrees of severity has been described in affected individuals. We present discordance for facial duplication between monozygotic twins in which maxillary and mandibular duplication was present in one. The involved twin showed the following findings: ocular hypertelorism, bifidity of the nose, duplication of the maxilla, macrostomia, cleft of the lower lip, hamartoma of the vomer, supernumerary teeth, duplication of the mandibular teeth, bifidity of the tongue, and hamartoma of the floor of the mouth. Surgical management of the facial anomalies is discussed. A review of the literature and discussion of this rare malformation are presented.
