This report describes trends in the death rate for all mental disorders, presenile and senile dementia, and alcoholic psychoses and alcohol abuse/dependence in Canada for the period 1965-1983. It is demonstrated that overall there has been an increase in the death rate for each of these causes of mortality, both for males and females, and that in the case of presenile and senile dementia the increase has been particularly rapid. The older age groups appear to be contributing most to the observed changes. Conjectures are made as to the underlying reasons for the observed trends.

A study of 51 patients with psychogenic abnormalities developed in old age has shown that the development of such disorders is a comparatively frequent outcome of neuroses and reactive psychoses with the onset in the presenile period and only as an exception takes place in patients with the onset of psychogenic disturbances in old age. Depressive development has proved most typical for advanced age. Such manifestations as chronic subdepression, diffuse hypochondria, egocentrism and rent orientations are universal for all clinical variants of senile pathological development of personality. According to a regression analysis the development of psychogenic disturbances in the second half of life is facilitated by the objective significance and persistence of traumatic situations, a low professional level of patients and a number of other socio-psychological and biological characteristics of the person.
A study of singular doses and subsequent maintenance therapy by azafen on the higher nervous activity of mental patients in presenile age (67 cases) revealed that its action depends upon the dosage of the preparation and the nosological syndrome. A depressive involutional psychoses can be controlled by azafen in doses up to 75 mg daily. By dosages of 25 mg azafen reduces or cessates completely the syndrome of changed consciousness due to disorders of brain circulation. An arrest of a depressive syndrome in manic-depressive psychosis in old age can be attained by an introduction of 150-200 mg of azafen daily.
