Socio-demographic characteristics and sex practices related to herpes simplex virus type 2 infection in Mexican and Central American female sex workers.

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between HSV-2 infection and several socio-demographic and sexual practices of Mexican and Central American female sex workers (FSWs) in the Soconusco region in the State of Chiapas, Mexico. A cross-sectional study was carried out based on a sample frame of bars where FSWs were active in the Soconusco region. FSWs consented to investigations and answered a questionnaire and provided a blood sample for specific HSV-2 antibody analysis. One hundred and sixteen bars were studied and 484 women were interviewed. The overall frequency of HSV-2 infected women was 85.7%. Variables that reflected exposure to HSV-2 were significantly associated with the frequency of the infection. Additionally, variables such as education and country of origin were significantly associated with HSV-2 infection. These results suggest that this infection is highly endemic in the Soconusco, posing a health risk for the study population.

Common methylation characteristics of sex chromosomes in somatic and germ cells from mouse, lemur and human.

DNA methylation of sex chromosomes was analysed using anti-5-methylcytosine antibodies on metaphase chromosomes of somatic cells from three species: human, lemur and mouse. Germ cells were also studied in male mouse. In female cells (human and mouse), the late replicating X was always the less methylated chromosome. Compared with autosomes, the methylation of both X chromosomes was always lower in fibroblasts than in lymphocytes and the difference was always greater in mouse than in human. In human, mouse and lemur male cells, the labelling of the unique X chromosome was quite similar to that of the early replicating X from female cells. Except for the heterochromatic region of the human Y chromosome, strongly methylated, the overall methylation of the Y chromosome was low. In mouse testicular cells, a variety of DNA methylation patterns was observed according to the cell type and the state of differentiation. Finally, the only structures of sex chromosomes which remain methylated in all conditions correspond to their pseudoautosomal regions.

A study of the psychosexual characteristics of sex killers: can we identify them before it is too late?

Thirty-three sex killers were compared to 80 sexual aggressives, 23 sadists, and 611 general sex offenders on sexual history and preferences, substance abuse crime, violence, mental illness, personality, neurological and endocrine abnormalities. Compared to other groups, sex killers started their criminal careers earlier, more often had been to reform school, were members of criminal gangs, set fires, and were cruel to animals. They tended so show more sadism, fetishism, and voyeurism. They more often collected pornography, but they did not use it in their offenses. They more often abused drugs and some suffered from drug induced psychoses. Their most common diagnosis was antisocial personality disorder, but only 15.2% met criteria for psychopathy. Sex killers showed most signs of neuropsychological impairment, grades failure, and learning disabilities. Results suggest that greater emphasis be placed on studying adolescent sex offenders and conduct disordered children which may help identify potential sex killers.

Effects of stimulus characteristics and sex of subject on perceived emotion.

To determine the influence of pupil size, eye size, sex of stimulus face, and sex of subject on perceived emotion, 308 college students filled in missing features on stimulus faces. Each face was independently rated by two male judges on a continuum of negative to positive emotion. Analysis indicated that sex of subject was the only variable to affect perceived emotion. Women (n = 175) tended to draw faces that were judged to be more positive than faces drawn by men (n = 133).

Ultrastructural changes in human prepubertal prostatic epithelium grown in vitro.

Ultrastructural changes in the prepubertal human prostatic epithelium maintained in vitro are described and are compared with the ultrastructure of the same tissue before culture. In cultured cells, rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex are poorly represented and the latter also loses its polarity. Increase in cytoplasmic microfilaments is discussed in relation to possible vitamin A deficiency. Primary and secondary lysosomes, arising from autophagy and endocytosis, occur in large numbers as autophagosomes, myelin figures, residual bodies, and multivesicular bodies. Prostatic acid phosphatase activity, an important secondary sex characteristic, is influenced by sex hormones and malignancy; since this enzyme is lysosome-associated, special emphasis is placed on lysosomal changes. Some ultrastructural changes in rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, and the lysosomal system are similar to those observed after castration. This study presents ultrastructure of cultured cells which form the basis for studies involving neoplastic transformation, aging, and hormonal manipulation using an in vitro model. This is necessitated by the absence of an in vivo animal model for prostatic neoplasia; hence studies on prostatic oncogenesis, and age-related phenomenon, must be done on cells in vitro. Significance of this study is enhanced by the fact that normal human prepubertal prostate has not been studied before and normal viable prostate is generally not available for investigations.
