The commodification of international migration: findings from Thailand.

"The organisation of international contract-labour migration within Asia has been increasingly dominated by commercial agencies acting as intermediaries between workers and foreign employers. The principles underpinning the gatekeeping role of such agencies in the East Asian migration system are examined. A consideration of the international labour recruitment system in Thailand is based on survey work among agents, community leaders and recently returned migrants."

The determinants of infant mortality in Malaysia: a graphical chain modelling approach.

"A graphical chain modelling approach is used to study the determinants of neonatal and post-neonatal mortality in Malaysia. This approach provides an easily interpretable empirical description and illustrates explicitly the conditional independence structure between each pair of variables. The interpretation can be read directly from a mathematical graph. Besides examining the direct association of each determinant on mortality, we also examine the effects of socio-economic determinants on intermediate determinants to understand the pathways through which the socioeconomic determinants affect the chance of mortality. The data anlaysed come from the second Malaysian Family Life Survey, fielded between August 1988 and January 1989. "

Regionalization, economic restructuring and labour migration in Singapore.

"This paper documents the impact of economic development on changes in employment and labour migration in Singapore. High export-led growth and the relaxation of immigration policies in the late 1960s enabled employment of substantial numbers of unskilled foreign labour in manufacturing, construction and domestic service sectors....Economic development in the 1990s, characterized by the regionalization drive which relocates relatively resource-intensive operations of Singapore-based companies overseas, has led to increased retrenchments and a moderation of demand for foreign workers. The upgrading of remaining production operations in Singapore is expected to increase demand for workers with higher skill levels. Emigration of highly educated and skilled professionals from Singapore became a national concern in the late 1980s. However, with regionalization, the new challenge in the 1990s has become one of encouraging Singaporeans to temporarily take up overseas positions." (SUMMARY IN FRE AND SPA)

People for sale: the need for a multidisciplinary approach towards human trafficking.

The article addresses the question of how to develop appropriate measures to tackle trafficking in women, based on the findings of a study of trafficking between the Philippines and Belgium. It argues that there is no easy or unidimensional solution to human trafficking, since it is influenced by a complex set of factors, often working in combination with one another. It concludes that control measures alone cannot stop the flow of trafficking in women and that a legal approach which relies solely on one type of legislation would be too narrow. An effective strategy must combine and balance punitive measures with protection of human rights, stricter border control and the removal of the root causes of irregular movements. Measures must be agreed and coordinated between origin, transit and receiving countries.

Possible protective immunity in human opisthorchiasis.

Chronic infections with the liver flukes Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis affect over 30 million people in southeastern Asia. With ongoing exposure, reinfection readily occurs following curative treatment and cumulative infections result in significant morbidity and a predisposition to cholangiocarcinoma. Though protective immunity has never been described in human opisthorchiasis, heterogeneity in worm burden occurs and a small number of exposed residents of endemic areas remain apparently uninfected. To explore the nature of this heterogeneity, we compared levels of serum antibody (Ab) to O. viverrini measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 83 stool egg-positive and 49 stool egg-negative residents of an O. viverrini-endemic area in Thailand. Compared to the egg-positive residents, the egg-negative group had significantly higher levels of immunoglobulin (Ig)G, IgA and IgM to adult worm homogenate (AWH) and total Ab to metacercaria homogenate (MH). Furthermore, immunoblot analyses revealed that a significantly higher proportion of sera from the egg-negative residents had IgA reactivity against a 38-kDa AWH antigen and IgM reactivity against carbohydrate epitopes of a 42-kDa AWH glycoprotein antigen. These findings support a hypothesis that the egg-negative group includes individuals who may be immunologically resistant to this usually chronic infection.

A survey of bancroftian filariasis among South-East Asian expatriate workers in Saudi Arabia.

In a survey of bancroftian filariasis among expatriate workers from five South-East Asian countries (India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Philippines) where human filariasis is endemic, 762 individuals were examined in the Abha area (Asir) of south-western Saudi Arabia. A prevalence of microfilaraemia of 3.5% and a mean mf density of 6.0/20 mm3 of blood was found among 259 Indian males only. In three out of 9 microfilaraemic cases, clinical signs suggestive of filariasis were observed. The only species identified was Wuchereria bancrofti showing strict nocturnal periodicity. Preliminary laboratory studies on the susceptibility of local mosquitoes to infection with W. bancrofti in which laboratory-bred Culex (C.) pipiens was fed directly on a microfilaraemic volunteer from Madras, South India, revealed that this species was highly susceptible to the Madras strain of the parasite with an average infection rate of 57 (range 41-75)% and a worm burden of 3.5 L3/infective mosquito. This is the first report that local Cx. pipiens mosquitoes may act as a potential vector of introduced bancroftian filariasis in Saudi Arabia. The potential danger of bancroftian filariasis importation and, more importantly, the establishment of new self-sustained foci of the disease is likely to depend upon the abundance of mf carriers and density of vector mosquitoes feeding on carriers.

Population pressure and land use change: from tree crops to sawah in Northwestern Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The author describes the role of population pressure in the current transition from tree crops to wet rice cultivation (sawah) in Northwestern Kalimantan, Indonesia. He contends that this change is occurring "because the senescent trees no longer produce enough commodities to exchange for rice to feed an enlarged population." The historical background is described, policies of the Indonesian government are discussed, and data are presented on the rate of population growth

Migration and the transformation of employment and household structures.

Data collected in Colombia and Thailand in 1977 are used to "compare the employment and household characteristics of migrants before and after the move in order to assess the degree of change which accompanies migration. Moreover, these comparisons [are] made for migration streams between places at different levels in the urban hierarchy with the intention of determining within which streams the greatest transformations occur."

Resettlement experiences and alternatives in Thailand.

Problems concerning the resettlement of those made homeless by the construction of dams to create reservoirs in Thailand are considered. The authors attempt "firstly, to examine the rationale for spontaneous and planned resettlement in Thailand. Secondly, the determinants of the success or failure of resettlers are explored with reference to selected planned resettlement projects. Finally, resettlement alternatives for prospective reservoir evacuees are proposed."
