[Ultrastructural analysis of villous tumors of the large intestine (with the use of a computer)].

As a result of an analysis of the literature and the authors' electron microscopic data on 23 cases of rectal villous tumors, a standardized complex of ultrastructural features and their variants were determined. The said characteristics were used in the development of formal criteria for evaluation of the results of electron microscopic investigation of villous tumors displaying different degrees of dysplasia of the epithelium. A suitable algorithm of automatic data processing was worked out. The program in FORTRAN was read in a D3-28 mini-computer. The use of an automatic system for verification of diagnostically controversial data is suggested.

Improvement in microscope photometry by voltage to frequency conversion: analogue measurement and digital processing.

A system for digital measurement of microscope photometric signals, based on Voltage to Frequency Conversion (VFC) and suitable for automatic data processing, has been devised. Advantages and disadvantages are illustrated with special emphasis on the comparison between photocurrent measuring and photon counting techniques. A statistical analysis of the results allows the calibration of VFC net counts versus detected photons. A biological application is reported; this shows the suitability of the system even to low light levels.

[MapDraw: a microsoft excel macro for drawing genetic linkage maps based on given genetic linkage data].

MAPMAKER is one of the most widely used computer software package for constructing genetic linkage maps. However, the PC version, MAPMAKER 3.0 for PC, could not draw the genetic linkage maps that its Macintosh version, MAPMAKER 3.0 for Macintosh, was able to do. Especially in recent years, Macintosh computer is much less popular than PC. Most of the geneticists use PC to analyze their genetic linkage data. So a new computer software to draw the same genetic linkage maps on PC as the MAPMAKER for Macintosh to do on Macintosh has been crying for. Microsoft Excel, one component of Microsoft Office package, is one of the most popular software in laboratory data processing. Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is one of the most powerful functions of Microsoft Excel. Using this program language, we can take creative control of Excel, including genetic linkage map construction, automatic data processing and more. In this paper, a Microsoft Excel macro called MapDraw is constructed to draw genetic linkage maps on PC computer based on given genetic linkage data. Use this software, you can freely construct beautiful genetic linkage map in Excel and freely edit and copy it to Word or other application. This software is just an Excel format file. You can freely copy it from ftp://211.69.140.177 or ftp://brassica.hzau.edu.cn and the source code can be found in Excel's Visual Basic Editor.

Structure of the soft palate and composition of the oral mucous membrane in monkeys.

The soft palate of monkeys (M. irus, mulatta, fasciculata; 2.3 +/- 0.4 kg in weight) was studied morphologically and stereologically. After fixation by perfusion, the tissue was disected free, divided in halves and the halves into 5 segments each, and processed for light, transmission- and scanning electron microscopy. Morphometric techniques and a newly developed computer program for automatic data processing (Mumana) were employed in order to estimate, at the light microscopic level, the volumetric composition of the oral soft palate mucosa. The latter showed a different composition in anterior and uvular segments, without significant differences between male and female animals, but with slight changes possibly due to age. The main constituents of the oral soft palate mucosa were glandular and connective tissue, and lymph follicles, the latter being associated with the glandular duct system. The epithelial lining of the oral and nasal aspects were described, and taste buds embedded in island of orthokeratinizing stratified epithelium were demonstrated. The association between lymph follicles and the glandular duct system was discussed in relation to similar structures in man, and in relation to the hypothesis that they are concerned in local antigen recognition.

Topics in library technology: labeling techniques.

Labels which do not fit on the spines of books should be placed on the upper rather than lower left corner of the front cover, because the upper corner becomes visible first when a volume is tilted from the shelf. None of the past methods of marking call numbers on the spines or covers of books-direct hand lettering by pen, brush, or stylus; affixing cold release characters; embossing by hot type; or gluing labels which are handlettered, typed, or printed-nor even present automatic data processing systems have offered all the advantages of the relatively new Se-Lin labeling system: legibility, reasonable speed of application, automatic protective covering, permanent bonding, and no need for a skilled letterer. Labels seem unaesthetic to some librarians, but their advantages outweigh this consideration. When only one or a few copies of the same call number are required, Se-Lin is the best system now available for libraries marking over 1,000 books a year.

[Biostatical and biomathematical evaluation of morphometric data--illustrated on the example of the relationship between axon diameter and thickness of the myelin sheat. I. 1st data evaluation step: empiric regression].

Application of the biostatistical procedure of empirical regression on a first data processing stage is demonstrated by examples from morphometrical research concerning the connection between axon caliber and thickness of myelin sheat of nerve fibers. This mathematical kind of describing connections between continuous random variables offers advantages which are discussed under the aspects of information compressing, of automatic data processing, and of providing objective basis for the process of data handling and decision making of further evaluations.

[Measurement of the carotid intima-media thickness. An innovative technique for assessing cardiovascular risk].

ASSESSMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR RISK: Measurement of the intima-media thickness in the carotid artery is optimized by coupling high-resolution ultrasonography with automatic data processing systems, allowing improved precision. Although the optimal site of measurement remains controversial (common carotid, bifurcation, internal carotid), there appears to be a consensus on need for bilateral automatic measurement. The intima-media thickness is considered a marker of atheromatous disease and its diffusion. This parameter probably integrates the deleterious effect of different cardiovascular risk factors accumulated over decades. In addition, several prospective observation studies have reported a positive relationship between measurement of the intima-media thickness of the carotid artery and risk of cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction and stroke). DETECTION AID: Although the results issuing from epidemiology observation studies are still too preliminary, to evaluate the positive and negative predictive value for occurrence of clinical events in relation to different levels of thickness, this simple rapid and noninvasive measurement could be a useful tool for subjects with high cardiovascular risk. PERSPECTIVES: Measurement of arterial parameters, determined by high-resolution ultrasonography, will probably shortly become an integral part of the evaluation strategies for cardiovascular risk. Future comparative studies will provide an assessment of the comparative predictive value of these different parameters (quantitative structural analysis versus quantitative and qualitative analysis of the structure versus structural and functional analysis of the arteries).

A computerized cancer patient information system.

The purpose of this study was to realize a computer system for cancer data automatic processing. A clinical research in oncological practice is usually time consuming and often not reliable or deceiving because of a number of various errors. Until now, only a few information systems have been specifically designed for cancer data processing, and these have a limited capacity of autonomous data elaboration. Our system, based on an original computer program, can compile, store and process essential data on cancer diseases, with a high degree of reliability and high speed of elaboration. Input and output of this system are simplified and user oriented, without limitations for the subject at study on clinical research, and no particular training of the physicians involved is necessary.

A computer program for automated data evaluation to support in vitro higher-throughput screening for drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics attributes.

With the advances in analytical techniques, higher-throughput screening for drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK) attributes has become an integral part of drug discovery. However, as the number of compounds increases, the volume of data that needs to be processed and evaluated increases exponentially. As a result, a major challenge for the analytical chemist is how to quickly process the vast amount of data so as to keep up with the throughput of the screening assay. We have developed a customized computer program for automated evaluation of the liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometric (LC/MS/MS) data generated from the in vitro DMPK screening assays. This program performs automatic data processing and quality control. It identifies analytical anomalies, such as low internal standard intensity and poor reproducibility of replicates. All analytical anomalies for individual compounds are summarized into an 'E-Log' in a color-coded format for reviewing. With the use of this program and other supporting software, data processing and evaluation for up to 100 compounds are accomplished in several minutes.

Computer use in nursing management.

Nursing interest in computer use is on the increase; to date, however, its focus has been on clinical applications. Manually processing the volume of information needed to effectively and efficiently manage a modern nursing department becomes more difficult daily. This paper investigates published nursing management computer applications. It points to the need to look beyond the simple administrative to true management information systems, and outlines a role for the nurse administrator in preparing and implementing automatic data processing (ADP) plans.

[Rational interpretation of the lateral teleradiograph by means of the principle of magnetostriction].

A new method for the pick up and processing of cephalometric data from teleradiographs was reported. The possibilities for error with the method were objectified by comparative measurements using traditional methods; no significant differences or disadvantages could be established in comparison with other methods of measurement. The errors due to the projection and technical imperfections in the roentgenograms remained unaltered in the assessment. The basic advantage therefore is the efficient function, which is particularly effective when combined with automatic data processing systems.

[Experience in the development of information systems at the canton level].

In the aim of need and necessity of stronger orientation and more efficient aim realization 35 Strategy SZO (health information system) country members should have the health information system able to provide information support to their National strategy "Health for All until 2005". Such a health information system should provide the information support for the planning process, monitoring and health evaluation, health care and work in public-health services sector. The experiences in the work of information system organization in Tuzla Canton Public Health Institute should be seen from two aspects: Aspect of the information system significance in the framework of the social-medical, epidemiological, hygiene-ecological and other activities of the Institute; Aspect of the information system development within the Public Health facilities of Canton in relation to the automatic data processing important for registration, tracking and recognition of success and population health care needs. From the aspect of establishing the information system in the area of Tuzla Canton and the Public Health Institute role, there is a need for adequate high technology technical equipment, with the task to enable practical realization of defined projects and in such a way, varied acceleration of work giving as a result usable information. The canton Public Health Institute needs as follows: necessary resources for free information system work; to provide free computer access to all; to ensure connection with other PHI through communications. In this way the canton Public Health Institute information system would be connected with other information systems in the field of health. In would be a base for development of integrated health information system. The information system is desirable aim for the work of Public Health Institute, method of selection and leading content of modernization. Analysing the Bill of Law on Health Care, a defectiveness has been noticed, since the information system is not regulated. Therefore, the need to be issued by Lay is of great importance. A statement that all projects on local information systems, started before war or during the war have been stooped, joins to the aforesaid, and also a series of independent information system in different health segments, which are not connected into one, unique information system. In any case, this disparaged the quality of medical decision making and therefore, providing of high-quality services at all levels of health work.
