Effect of including relationships in the estimation of genetic parameters of beef calves.

Variances and covariances for birth weight, gain from birth to weaning (ADG), and 205-d weight were obtained from a sire-dam model and a sire-maternal grandsire model for a herd of Angus and a herd of Hereford cattle. Estimates of direct additive genetic variance (sigma 2A), maternal additive genetic variance (sigma 2M), covariance between direct and maternal additive genetic effects (sigma AM), permanent environmental variance (sigma 2PE), and residual variance (sigma 2e) were obtained both with and without the inverse of the numerator relationship matrix (A-1) included. Estimates of heritability for direct genetic effects (h2A), maternal genetic effects (h2M), and the correlation between direct and maternal effects (rAM) for birth weight were .37, .18, and -.01 in Angus and .53, .23, and -.19 in Herefords, respectively, for the analyses without A-1. For the analyses with A-1, estimates of h2A, h2M, and rAM were .42, .22, and -.12 for Angus and .58, .22, and -.13 for Herefords, respectively. Estimates of h2A, h2M, and rAM for ADG were .43, .15, and -.44 in Angus and .52, .38, and -.03 in Herefords, respectively, without A-1. With A-1, estimates of h2A, h2M, and rAM were .57, .15, and -.32 for Angus and .58, .39, and -.05 for Herefords, respectively. Estimates of h2A, h2M, and rAM for 205-d weight were .49, .15, and -.46 for Angus and .58, .43, and -.06 for Herefords, respectively, without A-1. With A-1, estimates of h2A, h2M, and rAM were .63, .16, and -.36 for Angus and .66, .43, and -.08 for Herefords, respectively. Estimates of h2A were higher with A-1 than without A-1, but estimates of h2M were similar. Using variances and covariances obtained from analyses including A-1 generally gave higher estimates of direct breeding values than using variances and covariances obtained from analyses not including A-1. Both Pearson product-moment and Spearman rank correlations were high (.99) between estimates of breeding values from the two analyses, although some changes in rank did occur.

Testicular development, daily sperm production and epididymal sperm reserves in 15-mo-old Angus and Hereford bulls: effects of bull strain plus dietary energy.

Bull calves (n = 143) were obtained from two strains of Angus and two strains of Hereford cattle for which replacements were selected on the basis of superior feedlot growth performance on either high- or medium-energy diets. From weaning to slaughter at 15 mo of age, bulls were fed either the high-energy (80% grain + 20% forage) or medium-energy diet (100% forage) corresponding to their strain. Bulls in high-energy diet groups had a greater (P less than .05) scrotal circumference at 12 mo, but not 15 mo of age, than bulls in medium-energy diet groups. Compared with Hereford bulls, Angus had greater (P less than .01) scrotal circumference (36.1 vs 33.9 cm) and greater (P less than .05) paired testes weight (570 vs 464 g) at 15 mo of age. Daily sperm production per gram testicular parenchyma (DSP/g) was affected by strain-diet (P less than .01) but not by breed. Bulls in medium-energy diet groups had 12% greater DSP/g than did high-energy diet bulls (17.4 X 10(6) vs 15.5 X 10(6)). Daily sperm production (DSP) was 9% and 30% greater (P less than .01) for medium-energy diet bulls in 1980 (8.2 X 10(9) vs 7.5 X 10(9)) and 1981 (8.0 X 10(9) vs 6.2 X 10(9)), respectively, compared with high-energy diet bulls. The effect (P less than .01) of breed on DSP was attributed to breed differences in paired testes weight.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Animal Nutritional Physiological Phenomena↗

[Breed and sex differences in the temperament of calves in a cow-calf operation].

Behavioural traits related to temperament were studied in German Angus (Aberdeen Angus x German dual purpose breeds) and German Simmental cattle. Temperament was defined as the animal's behavioural response to handling. 498 calves (279 German Angus, 219 German Simmental) were tested with two different restrain tests. The animals were tested three times individually during a fixation procedure (days of live: 5, 19, 33) or weighting (days of live: 62, 138, 193). LSQ-means were calculated with a model including breed, year and sex as fixed effects and the sire as a random. Furthermore a regression on the age of the calf was included. Behaviour of the animals were recorded. Significant differences in the recorded parameters were found between the breeds on day 19 and 33 for one test and day 62 for another test. German Angus and male calves were less difficult to handle regarding the different parameters. Both tests could be used to show differences between the breeds.

Physiological responses of Bos taurus and Bos indicus cattle to prolonged, continuous heat and humidity.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the physiological responses of Bos taurus (Angus cross, n = 6) and Bos indicus (Brahman, n = 6) cattle to prolonged heat and humidity, as can occur during live export by sea. Each experiment was carried out in climate-controlled rooms, where heifers were exposed to 15 d of sustained heat and humidity. The treatment was designed to be representative of a long-haul, live-export voyage leaving a southern Australian winter and traveling to a Middle Eastern summer. Wet bulb temperature (WBT) was used to give a combined measure of dry bulb temperature and relative humidity and was increased over several days, culminating in 5 d at 32 degrees C WBT between d 7 and 11. By d 11, the respiratory rate and core body temperature increased (P < 0.001) compared with values at lower ambient temperature on d 1 and 2 when climate-controlled rooms were not operating. Feed intake of Bos taurus was reduced (P < 0.001) by d 11, whereas that of Bos indicus did not change (P = 0.14). Despite no diurnal variation in climatic conditions, core body temperature of both Bos taurus and Bos indicus continued to show a circadian amplitude of approximately 1 degrees C throughout the hottest period. This amplitude increased during the recovery period after heat was removed (up to 1.8 degrees C for Bos indicus and 1.6 degrees C for Bos taurus). Water intake for both Bos taurus and Bos indicus increased when WBT increased (P < 0.01 on d 11). Significant acid-base and blood electrolyte imbalances occurred in both Bos taurus and Bos indicus, with changes in Bos taurus being more substantial and prolonged. The increase in respiratory rate coincided with a decrease in the partial pressures of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate in venous blood. However, during the hottest period, average daily venous blood pH remained unchanged. When the heat load was reduced after d 11, the blood pH decreased, indicating metabolic acidosis. Blood pH declined from 7.44 to 7.36 for Bos taurus (P < 0.001) and from 7.44 to 7.38 for Bos indicus (P < 0.001). Other parameters measured include heart rate; packed cell volume; plasma and urine Na, K, and Cl; urine pH; and specific gravity. Our results suggest that Bos taurus cattle experience significant physiological changes during exposure to prolonged and continuous high heat and humidity, with alterations persisting for some days after the heat-stress conditions subside. Bos indicus experience similar but less pronounced physiological changes.

The history of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus in Australia and achievements in its control.

For more than 100 years, tick fever and the cattle tick have caused tremendous financial loss to cattle producers around the world. Since Australia became infected with the disease and infested with its tick vector in the mid-19th century, a great deal of research effort has been directed towards their effective control by Australian farmers, administrators and scientists. Such research has yielded information which has facilitated the development of various control strategies that have equal application in other countries afflicted with the same problem. It has been demonstrated that integration of a variety of these strategies is necessary for long-lasting control.

Comparison of three oxytetracycline regimes for the treatment of persistent Anaplasma marginale infections in beef cattle.

Anaplasmosis, caused by the tick-borne rickettsia, Anaplasma marginale, is an economically important disease of cattle in the United States and worldwide. Cattle that recover from acute infection become carriers in which low or microscopically undetectable A. marginale rickettsemia persists. Tetracycline antimicrobials are currently the only drug used in the US for treatment of acute anaplasmosis. There are currently no drugs specifically licensed for elimination of persistent infections. This study tested the efficacy of three oxytetracycline treatment regimens to clear A. marginale from cattle that were persistently infected. Forty Angus x Simmental steers, aged 6-12 months were experimentally infected with A. marginale. After the steers recovered from acute infection, seroconverted, and were confirmed infected using nested PCR followed by DNA hybridization, the carrier status of each animal was ascertained by sub-inoculation of blood into a separate, splenectomized Holstein calf. The steers were then blocked by bodyweight and randomly assigned as follows to four treatment groups: Treatment A, 300 mg/ml solution of oxytetracycline (Tetradure LA-300, Merial Canada Inc.) administered at 30 mg/kg, by intramuscular (i.m.) injection on day 0; Treatment B, the same 300 mg/ml solution of oxytetracycline administered at 30 mg/kg, i.m. on day 0 and again on day 5; Treatment C, a 200 mg/ml solution of oxytetracycline (Liquamycin LA-200, Pfizer Animal Health) administered at 22 mg/kg, intravenously (i.v.), q 24 h for 5 days (a treatment dose that corresponds with current Office International des Epizooties (OIE) recommendations for treatment prior to export). The fourth group consisted of untreated infected control cattle. All steers were still nested PCR and cELISA positive at 60 days after treatment. Infection was confirmed by subinoculation of blood into a splenectomized Holstein calf. These results demonstrated that the treatment regimens tested failed to clear A. marginale infections in carrier cattle.

Net energy of ensiled wet corn gluten feed in corn silage diets for finishing steers.

Two trials were conducted to determine the NE value of ensiled wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) in corn silage finishing diets for beef cattle. In Trial 1, 96 Angus-crossbred yearling steers were fed corn silage-based diets containing 0, 20, 40, or 60% ensiled WCGF. Increased dietary WCGF resulted in improved DMI (linear, P less than .05), ADG (linear; P less than .05), and feed/gain (linear, P less than .05). Levels of WCGF had no (P greater than .05) effect on fat thickness, marbling, quality grade, carcass protein, and carcass fat. In Trial 2, four Angus-crossbred yearling steers were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine the effect of feeding 0, 20, 40, or 60% WCGF on DE and ME values. Level of WCGF had no (P greater than .05) effect on dietary DE and ME values. Regression equations were developed for predicting NEm (Y = 1.51 + .0009X; R2 = .22) and NEg (Y = 1.04 + .0028X; R2 = .35) in which Y = predicted diet NE values in megacalories/kilogram and X = percentage of dietary WCGF. The NEg value increased .06 Mcal/kg for each 20% increase in WCGF. Predicted NEm and NEg values for WCGF are 1.60 and 1.32 Mcal/kg, respectively.

The effects of hair density of beef cattle on Haematobia irritans horn fly populations.

We show the relationships that exist between the amount of hair and quantity of sebum on cattle skin and the population density of the horn fly, Haematobia irritans. Brahman and Chianina steers had means of 2390 and 1587 hairs per cm2, respectively, significantly more than the mean number of hairs on Angus, Brahman x Angus Crossbred, Charolais, and Red Poll steers. The Chianina steers had > 30% more sebum present on their skin and hair (0.58g/929 cm2) than the Angus, Charolais, and Red Poll steers at the Beef Cattle Research Station Savoy, Arkansas. The Brahman steers had a significantly greater amount of sebum present on the skin (1.51 g/929 cm2) than the Crossbred and purebred Angus steers (0.55 and 0.25 g/929 cm2, respectively) at the South Central Family Farms Research Centre Booneville, Arkansas. The Brahman and Chianina steers had means of 61.9 and 17.0 horn flies per steer, respectively, during the fly season, whereas the Angus, Crossbred, Charolais and Red Poll steers had fly season means that ranged from 76.9 to 265.8 flies per steer. Regression analysis showed that an increase of 100 hairs per cm2, was associated with a reduction of 11 horn flies in the Angus II, 5 in Angus I, 20 in Charolais, 37 in Red Poll, and 0.4 in Chianina steers at the Savoy Station and a reduction of 6.6 horn flies for the Angus, Brahman, and Crossbred steers at the Booneville Centre. Regardless of cattle breed, an increase of 1.0 g of sebum per 929 cm2 output by the steer was associated with 478.5 additional hairs per cm2 on the animal. Each increase of 0.25 g of sebum per 929 cm2 resulted in a decrease of 9.2 horn flies per steer. We conclude that some of the factors responsible for fly-resistance in cattle are hair density and the corresponding amount of sebum present on cattle skin and hair.

Splanchnic metabolism of nutrients and hormones in steers fed alfalfa under conditions of increased absorption of ammonia and L-arginine supply across the portal-drained viscera.

Effects of increased ammonia and/or arginine absorption on net splanchnic (portal-drained viscera [PDV] plus liver) metabolism of nonnitrogenous nutrients and hormones in cattle were examined. Six Hereford x Angus steers (501 +/- 1 kg BW) prepared with vascular catheters for measurements of net flux across the splanchnic bed were fed a 75% alfalfa:25% (as-fed basis) corn and soybean meal diet (0.523 MJ of ME/[kg BW(0.75).d]) every 2 h without (27.0 g of N/kg of DM) and with 20 g of urea/kg of DM (35.7 g of N/kg of DM) in a split-plot design. Net flux measurements were made immediately before and after a 72-h mesenteric vein infusion of L-arginine (15 mmol/h). There were no treatment effects on PDV or hepatic O2 consumption. Dietary urea had no effect on splanchnic metabolism of glucose or L-lactate, but arginine infusion decreased net hepatic removal of L-lactate when urea was fed (P < 0.01). Net PDV appearance of n-butyrate was increased by arginine infusion (P < 0.07), and both dietary urea (P < 0.09) and arginine infusion (P < 0.05) increased net hepatic removal of n-butyrate. Dietary urea also increased total splanchnic acetate output (P < 0.06), tended to increase arterial glucagon concentration (P < 0.11), and decreased arterial ST concentration (P < 0.03). Arginine infusion increased arterial concentration (P < 0.07) and net PDV release (P < 0.10) and tended to increase hepatic removal (P < 0.11) of insulin, as well as arterial concentration (P < 0.01) and total splanchnic output (P < 0.01) of glucagon. Despite changes in splanchnic N metabolism, increased ammonia and arginine absorption had little measurable effect on splanchnic metabolism of glucose and other nonnitrogenous components of splanchnic energy metabolism.

Effects of alpha-tocopherol on metmyoglobin formation and reduction in beef from cattle fed soybean or cottonseed meal diets.

Hereford-Angus crossbred heifers were fed a cottonseed meal-based diet containing gossypol (14 mg free gossypol x kg body wt(-1) x d(-1); CSM), a soybean meal-based diet (SBM), or alpha-tocopherol-supplemented diets (4,036 IU vitamin E x heifer(-1) x d(-1) for 90 d; CSM+E and SBM+E). The effects of diet on color stability and aerobic metmyoglobin reducing ability of beef longissimus lumborum (LL) and psoas major (PM) were evaluated. The CSM containing gossypol did not affect alpha-tocopherol concentration, a* value, or hue angle value of beef muscles obtained from control or vitamin E-supplemented cattle compared to their SBM counterparts. Vitamin E supplementation increased endogenous alpha-tocopherol concentrations and color stability in LL and PM muscles compared with controls from either diet (P < .05). In the aerobic metmyoglobin reducing ability study, LL and PM muscles were stored in 1% O2:99% N2 (a pigment-oxidizing atmosphere) for 48 h and subsequently stored aerobically for an additional 48 h. Within the LL, alpha-tocopherol supplementation delayed metmyoglobin formation in LL exposed to 1% O2 (P < .05). Within the PM, no differences in metmyoglobin formation were found between controls and vitamin E treatments in SBM or CSM diets. Relative aerobic metmyoglobin reduction was the same (P > .05) in LL and PM muscles within SBM or CSM diets for control and vitamin E treatments. Alpha-tocopherol did not seem to affect metmyoglobin aerobic reducing ability in LL and PM muscles.

Synchronization of parturition in beef cattle with prostaglandin and dexamethasone.

The effectiveness of dexamethasone and prostaglandin in combination for induction and synchronization of parturition in cattle was evaluated in 100 pregnant Angus, Hereford, Charolais and Simmental cows. Cows were distributed equally by breed, day of gestation and cow age to one of three treatments: 1) Control, 2) Dexamethasone (25 mg) plus prostaglandin F(2alpha) (25 mg) or 3) Dexamethasone (25 mg) plus fenprostalene (1 mg). Hormones were administered simultaneously from 275 to 283 d of gestation. Gestation length at calving for control cows differed significantly (P < 0.01) among breeds: Angus, 278.5 +/- 0.9; Hereford, 283.1 +/- 1.1; Charolais, 283.2 +/- 1.5; and Simmental, 285.4 +/- 1.2 d. For hormone-treated cows, 80% of the calves were born between 30 and 46 h after the hormone injections; overall mean was 37.6 +/- 1.1 h. Calving response did not differ (P >0.1) between cows treated with prostaglandin F(2alpha) versus fenprostalene (36.5 +/- 1.6 vs 38.6 +/- 1.6 h) or among cow age, day of gestation, or breed. Also, duration of labor, calving difficulty and calf viability did not differ between calves born at an induced or spontaneous parturition. The incidence of placenta retained for >24 h was higher for induced than spontaneous parturition (21.0 vs 0.0%), but it did not differ (P >0.1) between cows treated with prostaglandin F(2alpha) or fenprostalene (19.2 vs 22.6%). An acceptable degree of synchrony of parturition was attained by the administration of prostaglandin F(2alpha) or fenprostalene in combination with dexamethasone. The higher incidence of retained placenta in treated than control cows did not affect subsequent fertility. The longer biological half-life for fenprostalene than for prostaglandin F(2alpha) provided no improvement in increasing synchrony of parturition or decreasing frequency of retained placenta.

Changes in proportions of empty body depots and constituents for nine breeds of cattle under various feed availabilities.

Mature cows (146) representing Angus, Braunvieh, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Pinzgauer, Red Poll, and Simmental breeds were slaughtered to contribute to the investigation of the effect of various feed availabilities on body composition. Weights recorded when cows were placed on feed were used to set daily diets at four rates of intake within each breed (55, 76, 96, and 111 g DM/[kg wt.75.d]). Cows remained on their assigned daily feed allotment throughout the study (3 to 5 yr). On the day of slaughter, shrunk live weights were recorded. Chemical determinations of protein (nitrogen x 6.25), ether extractable lipid, ash of dry matter, and moisture for hide and offal were obtained for all cows. Chemical determinations of these same constituents were obtained for the carcass soft tissue of 98 cows. Relationships among estimator traits carcass ash, warm carcass weight, resistive impedance, and carcass water from the 97 carcasses were used to predict the carcass constituents for the remaining 49 cows. Within breed, relationships between proportions of fat and empty body (sum of fat, ash, water, and protein from the three body pools of hide, offal, and carcass) were used to estimate empty body weight at 251 g fat/kg (standard reference body weight) for each of the nine breeds. Proportions of offal, carcass, hide, chemical constituents, and selected abdominal and thoracic organs relative to empty body weight from cows that attained weight stasis were regressed on one minus the ratio of individual actual empty body weight to breed standard reference weight. Among mature cows attaining weight stasis at various feeding rates, the proportion of offal remained constant, proportions of fat in carcass, hide, and offal increased with increasing feed level, and proportions of water and protein decreased. Significant variation (P < .01) attributable to breed in proportions of carcass, offal, hide, chemical constituents of the hide and offal, water, and protein of the carcass and selected organs was observed.

Endoparasites in calves of beef cattle herds: management systems dependent and genetic influences.

Prevalences and intensities of excretion of faecal stages of Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium parvum, Eimeria spp., Strongyloides papillosus and strongyles were determined in a German upland area in German Angus (GA) and German Simmental (GS) suckler of beef cattle herds covering two winter housing periods and the grazing season between them. Influences of the housing systems applied (maintenance on deep litter with (DL+) and without run-out (DL--), on slatted floor (SF) or by winter run-out yarding (WO)), breed differences and genetic influences by the sire were determined by statistical analyses; levels of IgG antibodies to E. bovis antigen were measured by ELISA. G. duodenalis was observed with a maximum prevalence of 38% in 4 weeks old calves, a cumulative incidence of 58% 9 weeks after birth and with generally low intensities. C. parvum infections were relatively rare with cumulative incidences of 20--25% in week 5 after birth. Highest prevalences were associated with housing system DL-- and a long-lasting calving period. Cumulative incidence of Eimeria spp. was almost 100%. E. bovis predominated by far followed by E. ellipsoidalis/zuernii. Mean maximum intensity of 1000 OpG occurred in week 7 after birth. Up to an age of the calves of 7 weeks >75% of all oocysts belonged to E. bovis. Prevalences and excretion intensities were lowest under the housing conditions SF and WO. Maternal antibodies in calves to E. bovis antigen were directly and inversely correlated with mean OpG values in GA and GS calves, respectively. S. papillosus was common with a cumulative incidence of 53% 9 weeks after birth and occurred independent of the housing system. Mean strongyle egg prevalence was 50% with 50--100 EpG by means throughout the grazing season. Egg excretion intensity in the early months of grazings was correlated with the age of the calves at turnout to pasture. Under the conditions of housing system DL-- GA calves could better control S. papillosus infections than GS calves whereas the latter were generally more effective in controlling the protozoa. Results of ANCOVA suggest significant paternal influences on S. papillosus infections in both breeds and on the protozoal infections in GA calves. The former could be disclosed independent of the housing system whereas environmental factors played an important role in the latter cases.

Effect of electrical stimulation on thermal shrinkage temperature of bovine muscle collagen.

The effect of beef carcass electrical stimulation on the thermal stability of intramuscular collagen was determined. Differential scanning calorimetric determinations of thermal shrinkage temperature revealed that electrical stimulation lowered the shrinkage temperature of collagen by an average of .6 C in the population of cattle studied. No difference between Hereford x Angus crossbreds and Charolais crossbreds were found, but the extent of the reduction of collagen shrinkage temperature caused by electrical stimulation was greater in animals that did not receive high grain diets or received grain for only a short period than in those fed grain for up to 210 days. Furthermore, panel tenderness and Warner-Bratzler shear tests showed that stimulation-induced tenderization was also greater in animals fed no grain or fed grain for a short time. No evidence of stimulation effects on myofibrillar proteins was observed from data on sarcomere length or myofibrillar fragmentation index. The reduction of thermal stability of bovine intramuscular collagen by electrical stimulation may result from a decrease in the number or strength of the collagen cross-links.

Bone, blood and faecal response to an acidogenic lick for range cattle using different concentrations of ammonium chloride.

Thirty Brahman-Angus cross heifers at breeding age on extensive grazing were used to test the effectiveness of NH4Cl as an acidogenic agent at 15,18, 21 and 26 % of a dicalcium phosphate lick (A+), compared to a lick of 5 parts dicalcium phosphate and 3 parts salt (A-). Blood and faecal phosphorus (P), faecal calcium (Ca) and faecal magnesium (Mg) were significantly (P<0.05) higher in A+ compared to A-animals at different stages of the experiment. Bone P did not increase in response to NH4Cl but bone Ca was significantly (P<0.05) higher in A+ animals offered 18% NH4Cl and significantly (P<0.05) lower at 15 and 26%. Bone Mg in A+ animals was significantly (P<0.05) higher at 15 and 18% NH4Cl and lower at 26% NH4Cl compared to A- animals. Percentage ash in bone increased linearly from 62.5 to 64.9% in A+ animals as NH4Cl was increased in the lick from 15 to 21% and then decreased to 63.3% but was significantly (P<0.05) greater than the percentage ash in A-animals when the NH4Cl was increased to 26%. Bone mineral status was only marginally improved by adding NH4Cl to the lick in this study but blood P was significantly (P<0.05) improved in A+ compared to A- animals when the lick contained 15, 21 and 26% NH4Cl. Based on bone mineral results reported here, it is recommended that, when NH4Cl is used as an acidogenic agent in licks for range cattle, the amount in the lick should not exceed 21%.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloidosis in Argentinian cattle caused by Senecio selloi.

A herd of 135 Aberdeen Angus cows were grazing on pastures containing abundant Senecio selloi in the eastern region of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Some undiagnosed deaths were observed during 1989. In 1990 the death count raised to 38 animals, all of them showing the same clinical signs and gross and histopathological lesions. The time from the start of signs to death varied from 2 to 6 d. The most conspicuous signs were distention of the abdominal cavity and moderate icterus of mucous membranes. At necropsy, large amounts of fluid were in the abdominal cavity, there were lesions in the digestive tract, kidneys and mesenteric lymph nodes, and the liver was enlarged and fibrous. Histopathology showed the hepatic parenchyma replaced by fibrous tissue with marked megalocytosis. The signs and lesions were consistent with those produced by pyrrolizidine alkaloids. An abundance of Senecio selloi resulted in a diagnosis of poisoning from this plant. This is the first report of toxicity due to this plant species in Argentina.
