Experimental study on the role of Shengfaling tincture in promoting blood circulation and hair growth in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Shengfaling tincture in promoting blood circulation and hair growth in rats. METHOD: Rat models of acute blood stasis, hair depilation and qi-deficiency was respectively established, and in each group, the rats were again divided into 3 subgroups which were subjected respectively to treatment with Shengfaling at normal concentration, Shengfaling at half the normal concentration or with 65% ethanol as the control. Observation of the hair growth and blood tests were performed in all the rats. RESULTS: It was observed that the viscosity ratios of the whole blood and of the plasma, along with the whole blood viscosity and hematocrit, were significantly reduced (P<0.05) in rats with acute blood stasis. In rats with hair depilation, the hair growth was faster in Shengfaling-treated groups than in the control (P<0.001), and a significant reduction in both blood viscosity and hematocrit was observed in rats with qi-deficiency which received Shengfaling treatment (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Shengfaling Tincture acts to promote blood circulation and hair growth in rats.

Measurement of total circulating blood volume following subarachnoid haemorrhage: methodological aspects.

The total circulating blood volume (TCBV) and total body/venous haematocrit ratio (Htb/Hv) was determined by simultaneous measurement of the red cell volume (RCV) and the plasma volume (PV) in 10 subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) patients, 10 supine bedresting control patients and 20 ambulant out-patients. The mean Htb/Hv of the SAH patients, 0.866, was found to be significantly lower than that of the supine controls, 0.908, and the ambulant patients, 0.909, (p less than 0.01). Using the ratio 0.866 the total circulating blood volume of the SAH patients was calculated from either their RCV or their PV and compared with their measured TCBV. Expressed as a percentage of measured TCBV the mean errors of these single volume determinations were 2.84% and 1.76% respectively. The significance of these changes in the Htb/Hv ratio of SAH patients is discussed in relation to the circulatory disturbances they suffer.

[State of central and regional hemodynamics in riveters depending on the type of blood circulation].

Tetrapolar rheovasography was used to medically examine 54 riveters, of equal age and duration of work, who were exposed to the complex action of low-intensity vibration and noise. The central, cerebral and peripheral hemodynamic indices were assessed depending on the blood circulation type with dew account of the current views on the hemodynamic norms. Identified were differences in the absolute figures of most indices of central and cerebral hemodynamics depending on the blood circulation type. The 'levelling' of the peripheral blood circulation indices was performed by initial vibration disease pathologic developments in vascular tension. It can be concluded that the hypokinetic type of blood circulation is a risk factor which should be taken into account in selecting the occupational criteria for riveters.

A fall of plasma osmolality created at dialyzer and its possible effect on circulating blood volume.

A mathematical analysis of fluid exchange during hemodialysis therapy was performed in order to determine which factors affect the circulating blood volume, and hence the circulatory stability. It was found that both fluid removal and also the fall of plasma osmolality during the passage of blood through the dialyzer can affect the circulating blood colume profoundly. The later was found to accelerate the decrease of circulating blood volume by an indirect action on capillary refilling. Some treatment systems such as those involving recirculation or ultrafiltration were found to show a small fall in osmolality with a correspondingly small fall in blood pressure. This result seems to be compatible with clinical experiences reported earlier and may explain why some methods of treatment are accompanied by stable circulatory function in spite of rapid removal of large amounts of fluid.

Circulating blood volume in burn resuscitation.

Circulating blood volume (CBV) was prospectively measured in patients with almost solely smoke inhalation injury (Group I: 10 patients) and in patients with severe cutaneous burn (Group B: 6 patients) consecutively until 96 hours after injury, to assess the effect of either injury on intravascular volume status by the pulse dye-densitometry method. All participants were treated by an ordinary fluid regimen based on the Parkland formula with an hourly urine output of 1.0 to 2.0 ml/kg for the resuscitation endpoint. CBV was also measured in 15 elective surgical patients for a control value (76.7+/-9.0 ml/kg). The level of CBV values in Group I was low, ranging from 54.4+/-6.9 ml/kg to 59.6+/-6.2 ml/kg (from 70.9% to 77.7% of control value), while in Group B from 48.5+/-5.5 ml/kg to 55.6+/-17.3 ml/kg (from 63.2% to 72.5%) until 72 hours after injury. There was no significant difference in CBV values between the two groups throughout the study period. We could elucidate the existence and extent of intravascular volume depletion in spite of optimal fluid treatment in both solely smoke inhalation injury and solely severe cutaneous burn. Almost solely inhalation injury was found to decrease CBV to less than that of severe cutaneous burn, which presumably led to the increased fluid requirement. Concerning the resuscitation endpoint in early burn treatment, this depletion in CBV must be taken in mind. Hourly urine output is speculated to be an effective and practical clue to manage a burn patient within permissive hypovolemia.

[Restoration of blood circulation in reperfusion of ischemic tissues].

In experiment there were studied changes of the tissue blood circulation and microcirculation during postischemic reperfusion of skeletal muscles with various density of capillaries. It was established that reactive hyperemia, caused mainly by enhancement of extracapillary tissue blood flow. While persistence of durable arterial hypertension the capillaries quantity and potential volume of microcirculatory bed are reducing, negatively influencing the blood circulation restoration process during postischemic reperfusion. In chronic ischemia the potential volume of microcirculation is increasing, securing complete restoration of blood circulation in postischemic reperfusion.

[Development of the avian and mammalian heart prior to the onset of blood circulation, studied in chick and mouse embryos].

Heart development, its morphological and functional development prior the start of blood circulation were compared in chicken and mouse embryos. At beginning of neurula stage, when also somites appear, the cardiogenic mesoderm forms into tissue of epithelial type and cardiac plate is developed in wall of pleuroperitoneal cavity. In conjugated cardiac plate, primordial cardiac cavity fundaments appear in the about 30-hour old chicken embryo with 6-7 somites. First myoblasts (and spontaneous action potentials) can be observed in the ventricular part of embryos with 7 somites. Hence, muscular differentiation is expanded to atrial section. In embryo with 9-10 somites straight cardiac tube is developed, its ventricular section pulsates feebly, but it is unable for blood circulation yet. Pacemaker tissue of cardiac tube is in the atrium. At the end of second day the first curvature of heart appears and myocytes of venous sinus become pacemaker. At the end of neurula stage the blood circulation starts in two-day old embryo with 16 somites. Development of heart of mammalian embryos differs in several aspects from cardiac development of avian ambryos. In mammals transformation and differentiation of cells in cardiac plate and primordial cardiac fundaments have a cranio-caudal trend and in nearly same developmental stage as in chicken. In mouse circulation is started by curved cardiac tube of embryo with 10-12 somites (eight and half day old) at the end of neurala stage.

Prognostic value of postoperative detection of blood circulating tumor cells in patients with colorectal cancer operated on for cure.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether postoperative detection of circulating tumor cells in peripheral blood influenced the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer after radical surgery. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: In a previous study, the authors demonstrated that baseline detection of blood circulating tumor cells does not have prognostic significance in patients with colorectal cancer. However, surgical procedures may increase tumor cell detachment and mobilization. METHODS: Sixty-six patients with histologically confirmed colorectal cancer operated on for cure were included in this study. Circulating tumor cells were detected by means of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction targeting to carcinoembryonic antigen messenger RNA in peripheral blood samples obtained 24 hours after surgery. Endpoints of the study were tumor recurrence, overall survival, and cancer-related survival. Univariate (Kaplan-Meier method) and multivariate (Cox regression model) analyses were performed. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 36 months, 15 patients (23%) had tumor relapse and 14 had died (21%), 8 of them from a cancer-related cause. Cox regression analysis identified lymph node metastases and gender as independent predictors of tumor recurrence and cancer-related survival, whereas overall survival was dependent on the degree of differentiation of the primary tumor. More importantly, the presence of circulating tumor cells after surgery had no prognostic influence on tumor recurrence, overall survival, or cancer-related survival. CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative detection of blood circulating tumor cells had no prognostic significance in patients with colorectal cancer operated on for cure.

Substance P-induced increase in vascular permeability in the rat trachea does not depend on neutrophils or other components of circulating blood.

An intravascular injection of substance P is known to increase vascular permeability in the rat trachea. Electrical stimulation of the cervical vagus nerve produces a similar response, presumably by releasing substance P or other tachykinins from sensory nerve endings. In the present study, we sought to determine whether the increase in vascular permeability induced by intravascular substance P or by vagal stimulation requires the presence of neutrophils or other components of circulating blood. To eliminate circulating blood, we perfused into the aorta of anesthetized rats an oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit solution containing albumin and monastral blue, a colloidal pigment that does not cross normal tracheal blood vessels. We then injected substance P intravascularly or electrically stimulated the right cervical vagus nerve. Increases in vascular permeability were quantified by using a microspectophotometer to measure the amount of extravasated monastral blue in tracheal whole-mounts. We found that the elimination of neutrophils and other components of circulating blood did not prevent the increase in tracheal vascular permeability induced by intravascular substance P or by vagal stimulation.

Cochlear strial blood circulation.

The present immunohistologic study demonstrates that cochlear strial blood circulation is markedly damaged in guinea pigs subjected to intense acoustic stimulation. In contrast, autonomic unbalance of the inner ear induced by resection or electric stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion has no appreciable effect on cochlear strial blood flow. In consequence, although strial blood circulation in the cochlea is susceptible to pathological change in some conditions, it does not appear to be affected by autonomic unbalance alone.
