Indoor dampness and molds and development of adult-onset asthma: a population-based incident case-control study.

Previous cross-sectional and prevalent case-control studies have suggested increased risk of asthma in adults related to dampness problems and molds in homes. We conducted a population-based incident case-control study to assess the effects of indoor dampness problems and molds at work and at home on development of asthma in adults. We recruited systematically all new cases of asthma during a 2.5-year study period (1997-2000) and randomly selected controls from a source population consisting of adults 21-63 years old living in the Pirkanmaa Hospital district, South Finland. The clinically diagnosed case series consisted of 521 adults with newly diagnosed asthma and the control series of 932 controls, after we excluded 76 (7.5%) controls with a history of asthma. In logistic regression analysis adjusting for confounders, the risk of asthma was related to the presence of visible mold and/or mold odor in the workplace (odds ratio, 1.54; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-2.32) but not to water damage or damp stains alone. We estimated the fraction of asthma attributable to workplace mold exposure to be 35.1% (95% confidence interval, 1.0-56.9%) among the exposed. Present results provide new evidence of the relation between workplace exposure to indoor molds and adult-onset asthma.

Integrated analysis of plasma metabolomics and proteomics reveals the biological characteristics of damp-heat and stasis-toxin syndrome in colorectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the biological attributes of core syndromes in colorectal cancer, namely, the damp-heat and stasis-toxin syndrome (SRYD). METHODS: Between October 2021 and October 2022, a cohort comprising 40 patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosed with damp-heat and stasis-toxin syndrome (SRYD group), 40 patients with CRC without this syndrome (non-SRYD group), and 40 healthy controls (Normal group) was recruited at Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine. Untargeted metabolomics analysis was conducted on plasma samples from all 120 participants, while differential protein analysis using four-dimensional data-independent acquisition proteomics was performed on 20 randomly selected samples per group. A combined analysis of proteomics and metabolomics data followed, and the identified potential diagnostic biomarkers were subsequently used to train and validate multiple machine learning models. RESULTS: Proteomic analysis revealed 130 differential proteins in the colorectal cancer with damp-heat and stasis-toxin syndrome (CRC-SRYD) group, enriched in pathways including complement and coagulation cascades, as well as nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signaling. Metabolomic analysis identified 584 differential metabolites within the same group, showing enrichment in pathways such as primary bile acid biosynthesis, central carbon metabolism in cancer, and glucagon signaling. Integrated pathway analysis indicated heightened activity of the NF-κB signaling pathway in the CRC-SRYD group. A biomarker panel, comprising 6 proteins and 9 metabolites selected through the ReliefF algorithm, was used to construct a diagnostic model with random forest, achieving an accuracy of 93.33%, sensitivity of 80.00%, and specificity of 100%. CONCLUSION: This study systematically elucidates plasma metabolomic and proteomic alterations in patients with CRC, establishing a robust diagnostic model for CRC syndrome (CRC-SRYD). Further investigation is warranted to clarify the underlying molecular mechanisms and biological foundations.

[A rabbit model of cervical spondylosis established by stimulation of wind, cold and dampness].

OBJECTIVE: To make an animal model of cervical spondylosis (arthralgia syndrome type) with stimulation of wind, cold, and dampness. METHODS: Twenty-four 8 months old male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly allocated into four groups: normal control group, light stimulation group, moderate stimulation group and severe stimulation group. The wind speed was 10.8-13.8 m/s, the temperature was (5+/-0.5)degrees centigrade, and the humidity was 100%. The rabbits of light, moderate, and severe stimulation groups were kept in the above-mentioned environments for 4 hours everyday, and for a total of 32, 64, and 128 hours, respectively. The intervertebral discs were stained with HE method, and observed with a light microscope. Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)), 6-ketone-prostaglandin F1alpha (6-K-PGF(1alpha)) and thromboxane B(2) (TXB(2)) contents were measured by ELISA. Fas and Bcl-2 expressions were examined by immunohistochemical avidin-biotin peroxidose complex technique. Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) mRNA expressions were examined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The nucleus pulposus of rabbits in the light and moderate stimulation groups shrunken, and in the severe stimulation group, the anulus fibrosus loosed or ruptured, and the cartilage end-plate became proliferated. Compared with rabbits in the normal control group, the PGE(2) content rose in the light stimulation group, the contents of PGE(2), 6-K-PGF(1alpha), and TXB(2) increased, the expressions of IL-1beta and TNF-alpha mRNAs and Fas were up-regulated, and the expressions of TGF-beta mRNA and Bcl-2 were down-regulated in the moderate and severe stimulation groups. The expression of Fas was up-regulated mostly and Bcl-2 was down-regulated mostly in the severe group. CONCLUSION: Moderate and severe stimulations of wind, cold and dampness can lead to degeneration of cervical intervertebral discs of rabbits. The model corresponds to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine about arthralgia syndrome caused by wind, cold and dampness.

[Attention deficit disorder, hyperkinetic disorder and DAMP in children. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis].

INTRODUCTION: The aim was to evaluate the diagnostic methods and differential diagnostic spectrum in children admitted for ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder), hyperkinetic disorder, or DAMP (deficit in attention, motor control and perception), including evaluation of the factors that are of greatest value in making a diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were recorded on admission and again after 12-15 months for all children admitted for suspected attention deficit to the children's department, Gentofte County Hospital in 1999. RESULTS: Of the 68 children admitted with the same behaviour, 27 had attention deficit (14 children with DAMP and 12 with ADHD) and 41 children had other disorders, including seven with pervasive developmental disorders, ten children who were mentally retarded, and 12 with psychosocial problems. DISCUSSION: The most important diagnostic method was a psychological investigation, if necessary in combination with a neuropsychological and/or motor examination. The Danish reference programme for children with DAMP seems the most reliable of the various diagnostic systems that exist today.

[Study on effect of spleen invigorating, qi benefiting and dampness removing Chinese drugs and Western medicine on serum epidermal growth factor in chronic atrophic gastritis patients].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of various combinations of Spleen invigorating and Dampness removing recipes and western medicine on level of serum epidermal growth factor (sEGF) in patients of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). METHODS: By means of Syndrome Differentiation three groups were divided as (1) Spleen invigorating I group (SI-I); (2) Spleen invigorating II group (SI-II); (3) Dampness removing group (DR); (4) western medicine group (WM); (5) healthy volunteers served as normal control group. The changes of symptoms and sEGF level were determined and compared between groups as well as before and after treatment. RESULTS: The sEGF in various groups of CAG were higher than that in the normal control (P < 0.01). In patients of SI-I and II groups, symptoms and pathological manifestations were improved significantly (P < 0.01), and sEGF dropped markedly after treatment (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05). The level of sEGF in DR raised after treatment (P < 0.05), but the level of sEGF in WM group lowered insignificantly. CONCLUSION: Inflammation of gastric mucosa could cause responsive elevation of sEGF in CAG patients. After treated with Spleen invigorating and Dampness removing Chinese drugs, the symptoms of CAG improved, simultaneously with the restoration of sEGF. sEGF could be taken as a sensitive index of the prognosis of CAG.

Simulating periodontal effects in dental osseointegrated implants: effect of an intramobile damping element on the fatigue strength of dental implants--an in vitro test method.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop and adapt a new method for testing dental implant systems and to apply it to existing systems with and without dampers. The parameters examined were the fatigue strength of the superstructure-retaining titanium screw, the deformation of the damper, and the effect on the supporting, bone-stimulating, and embedding material. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Ten pairs of implant specimens were prepared according to standard laboratory procedure and embedded in transparent polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Five pairs were provided with polyoxymethylene dampers and five with nondamping titanium connectors. Each pair was connected with a metal beam, and cyclic loads were applied with a pneumatic-driven machine at a frequency of 2 Hz. Chewing forces of 150 to 450 N were transmitted by springs individual to each specimen. For each of the 2 x 10(5) cycles, there was a control of the retaining screw and bonding between the fixture and embedding material by registration of gap propagation in the implant-PMMA interface. RESULTS: A significant damping effect was noticed on the implant--embedding material interface. Damping did affect the superstructure, since the retaining screws were plastically deformed. The screws were unscrewed when the applied load exceeded 300 N, while the undamped system was seemingly unaffected. CONCLUSION: The study method made it possible to evaluate damping effects on different levels of implant systems, while satisfying the requirements for testing in a "clinical-like" way. PMMA was comparable to bone in supporting implants during fatigue testing.

Bounds for damping that guarantee stability in mass-spring systems.

Mass-spring systems are often used to model anatomical structures in medical simulation. They can produce plausible deformations in soft tissue, and are computationally efficient. Determining damping values for a stable mass-spring system can be difficult. Previously stable models can become unstable with topology changes, such as during cutting. In this paper, we derive bounds for the damping coefficient in a mass-spring system. Our formulation can be used to evaluate the stability for user specified damping values, or to compute values that are unconditionally stable.

[Effect of various fixation agents on ultrasound damping in normal and pathological testicular tissues].

In normal and pathological testicular tissue the influence of various fixing agents (Formalin solution, Bouins solution, Hellys solution, Carnoys solution) concerning the acoustical properties of testicular tissue was examined. By means of an ultrasound spectroscopic measurement technique the ultrasound damping was registered by calculation of the ultrasound damping coefficient alpha. The results show that the most lower alpha values were obtained by fixation with formalin solution as well in normal as in altered testicular tissue. The results of fixation according to Helly, Carnoy and Bouin did show markedly differences. Therefore, the fixation of testicular tissue using formalin solution is the best way for experimental examinations of the ultrasound damping behaviour.

Comparison of the efficacy of defibrillation with the damped sine and constant-tilt current waveforms in the intact animal.

The efficacy of defibrillation using the damped sine and constant-tile (60%) truncated exponential waveforms was determined in each of nine dogs. Two measures of efficacy were used to compare the two waveforms: 1) threshold defibrillation current and 2) percent successful defibrillation. For both measures of efficacy, shock strength was expressed in terms of delivered energy. Mean threshold energy was 0.98 J/kg for the damped sine wave and it was 1.24 J/kg for the truncated exponential waveform. Percent successful defibrillation versus energy/kg curves were constructed for each of the waveforms and were found to be essentially the same. Percent successful defibrillation increased with increasing shock intensity. For 50% success, the energy for the damped sine wave was 1.16 J/kg; for the truncated exponential wave, the corresponding value was 1.15 J/kg. A shock of threshold intensity successfully defibrillated in approximately 50% of the defibrillation attempts, i.e., defibrillation threshold corresponds to about 50% successful defibrillation.
