Analytical toxicology: Applications of element-selective electrolytic conductivity detection for gas chromatography.

We applied a commercially available microelectrolytic conductivity detector to toxicological problems of qualitative and quantitative analysis by gas chromatography. The detector can be used for the sensitive and selective detection of halogen-, nitrogen-, and sulfur-containing compounds. Relative response in different element-selective detector variables such as reaction gas, reaction catalyst, and furnace temperature can be used to further improve qualitative identification by gas chromatography.

Contemporary drugs of abuse.

The physician needs to know the signs, symptoms and recommended treatments of drug overdoses. Overdose of hallucinogens usually does not require drug therapy. Overdose of amphetamines ("uppers") may be complicated by the presence of PCP, a dissociative substance. It is important for the physician to be familiar with the street terminology for contemporary drugs of abuse and to be aware of how users obtain these drugs.

Noncardiac pulmonary edema.

Several mechanisms leading to noncardiac pulmonary edema have been reviewed. Common features are damage to and increased permeability of vascular endothelium, interstitial and alveolar edema fluid high in protein content, increased pulmonary vascular resistance and pressure, nondependent distribution of the edema and normal left atrial or wedge pressure. The available evidence suggests that in some instances the sites of leakage are the pulmonary arterial walls and, perhaps in some, overperfused, damaged capillary beds. Therapeutic obestives differ from those in cardiac pulmonary edema in that efforts are directed toward a reduction in pulmonary blood flow and pulmonary arterial pressure during the period that endothelial healing is taking place.
