Since 1917, only 11 new endoparasiticides have been developed for the horse, of which five chemical classes are in common use. The selection pressure of frequent administration of deworming doses for parasite control programs has been associated with the development of resistance of small strongyle parasites to the effects of benzimidazoles and pyrantel salts. Against the background of the inevitability of the occurrence of ivermectin/moxidectin resistance, responsible use of equine anthelmintics based on the clinical pharmacology of the compounds and the biology/epidemiology of intestinal parasites is a major issue for equine clinicians. The evidence base for the recommendations for treatment and control of equine intestinal parasites is sparse, however, and few robust data exist from controlled clinical trials to validate current guidelines.

Eight bobcats with adjoining or overlapping home ranges were examined. Hematological values were within previously reported ranges. Six bobcats demonstrated antibody titers to Toxoplasma gondii. Isospora spp., Taenia taeniaeformis, Spirometra mansoides, Physoloptera rara, Toxocara cati, Strongyloides spp., Trichurus spp., Capillaria spp., and Ancyclostoma spp. were found also in the animals examined. The mean number of parasite species per host was 4.1. All bobcats tested negative for serum antibodies to Rocky Mountain spotted fever (Rickettsia rickettsii). Two bobcats had titers less than or equal to 1:20 for tularemia (Francisiella tularensis), and two were positive for leptospirosis (Leptospira spp.).

Compatible and efficient drugs for the therapy, caused by protozoal- or helminthic-infections, are available today. Many of them are not registered in Austria. Metronidazole, Mebendazole and Praziquantel are particularly effective. Most protozoal-infections can be treated with metronidazole. Mebendazole can be used against numerous nematode-infections (Ascariasis, Trichuriasis, Oxyuriasis, Ancylostomiasis), Niclosamide against cestode-infections (Taeniasis, Hymenolepiasis, Diphyllobothriasis), whereas, Praziquantel is applied against trematode-infections.
A cross-sectional study was performed on the residents of one in every ten households in the town of Novo Airão, in the northern meso-region of the State of Amazonas, 250 kilometers from Manaus by riverboat. A family cluster sample of 89 dwellings was studied. A stool sample was requested from each of the inhabitants for examination using the Lutz sedimentation and Baermann-Moraes-Coutinho techniques, and blood was taken by venous puncture for Trypanosoma cruzi Elisa antibody testing and immunofluorescence. From a total of 316 stool samples, 87.6% had one or more parasites: Ascaris lumbricoides (35.1%), Entamoeba histolytica (29.1%), Giardia lamblia (17.4%), and other parasites with lower prevalence rates. These results were directly correlated with lack of sanitation and clean water supply. Of the 346 sera examined, 16 (4.6%) were reactive to T. cruzi antibodies, but only three showed a correlation between this result and human contact with wild triatomines, known locally as "piassava lice".

A retrospective study was done to determine the presence of abdominal angiostrongyliasis in Nicaragua. Twelve cases of this parasitic disease were found among 48 visceral specimens: small intestine, liver and testes. The patients with intestinal lesions presented symptoms of an acute abdomen, and in some instances, a tumor-like mass was palpated in the lower right quadrant. A thickening of the intestinal wall accompanied by necrosis and perforation were the most important macroscopic findings. One patient with hepatic localisation of Angiostrongylus costaricencis displayed a clinical picture of visceral larva migrans-like syndrome. The chief laboratory findings were leukocytosis and eosinophilia. The histopathological examination showed granulomas and heavy eosinophilic infiltration around the eggs and larvae of A. costaricencis. Also, an adult worm was seen in one biopsy.
