This article agrees that the plethora of terms and concepts found in the literature on homosexuality is confusing. However, it may be entirely appropriate given the complex and multidimensional nature of the phenomenon under investigation. Numerous examples from the history of other sciences are used to show that conceptual consensus is very slow in coming. In some advanced fields, researchers have learned that reality is best described using cluster concepts and fuzzy sets. This paper introduces the notions of extensive and intensive meanings and gives examples of how the meanings that researchers adopt are dependent on the questions they are studying.
A psychodynamic analysis of the presenting problems of many gay male clients reveals the frequent presence of issues related to identity and intimacy. This paper explores these concepts from the viewpoint of observed clinical phenomena, their likely antecedents, and treatment strategies based on a model of psychological health which balances identity and intimacy.

The relationship between sex-typed behaviors and alcohol consumption is examined in a questionnaire study involving male and female undergraduates. A multiple regression analysis indicated that for women, feminine behavior was significantly negatively correlated with total alcohol, beer and distilled spirits consumption. Weight was positively correlated with total alcohol and wine consumption. For men, feminine behavior was negatively correlated with total alcohol, wine and beer consumption. Masculine behavior was positively correlated with total alcohol, wine and beer consumption; weight was negatively correlated with wine consumption. Except in the case of wine, sex-role variables were found to account for more of the variance in alcohol consumption than did biological gender. Feminine behavior was negatively associated with alcohol consumption for both men and women. Masculine behavior was positively associated with alcohol consumption for men.
Self-descriptions on sex role characteristics and related personality traits including achievement and affiliation were compared in four age groups of women: eighteen to twenty-two, twenty-nine to thirty-nine, forty to fifty-five, and sixty to seventy-five year-olds. In general, the two younger groups emerged as least like the traditional feminine sex role stereotype. In comparison to the older women, they were more willing to ascribe masculine sex role characteristics to themselves and rated themselves as less responsible, self-controlled, and affiliative. Conversely, the women over sixty and homemakers in their forties and fifties adhered most strongly to the conventional feminine traits. These differences are explained in terms of the recent changes in societal attitudes toward sex roles. There is also some evidence that significant life roles are related to self-descriptions on these personality dimensions.

50 boys, aged 3 to 16 yr., referred for psychotherapy for a gender-identity disorder were assessed by two parent-report instruments completed by their mothers--The Gender Behavior Inventory for Boys for preadolescent subjects and a modified form of the Parents' Evaluation of Child Behavior. Without access to these data, an independent clinical psychologist provided a diagnosis of the severity of a gender disturbance on a 5-point rating scale, based on clinical interviews and a psychological test battery. The gender-disturbed boys scored significantly above the mean of the standardized normal boys on the Gender Behavior Inventory for Boys Feminine Behavior subscale and significantly below the mean on the Extraversion subscale of the Gender Behavior Inventory. The ratings of severity of gender disturbance were significantly correlated .34 with Feminine Behavior subscale scores and -.50 with the Extraversion subscale scores. On the Parents' Evaluation the number of observed feminine behaviors listed was significantly correlated .57 with rated severity of gender disturbance but not with the Feminine Behavior subscale scores on the Gender Behavior Inventory.

Institutionalized actively alcoholic women (N = 46) were compared to groups of nondrinkers (N = 24), social drinkers (N = 61), and remitted alcoholics (N = 29) (both institutionalized and noninstitutionalized) on scales of sex-role conflict, sex-role ideology, sex-role satisfaction, and depression. When the factors of age, socioeconomic status, and marital status were controlled, alcoholic women scored as more depressed and more sex-role undifferentiated than nonalcoholic women. Alcoholic women were also found to have a relatively traditional sex-role ideology, and remitted alcoholics expressed less satisfaction than other groups with some traditional female roles. Evidence was not found to support the theory that alcoholic women experience a greater degree of sex-role conflict (as measured by the Bem Sex-Role Inventory) than nonalcoholic women.

Pathologic gambling and problem gambling affect approximately 5 to 15 million Americans and are common in young people. The community-minded family physician is in a good position to identify and assist patients who have gambling-related problems and thereby prevent or treat the resultant personal, family and social disruptions. Provider and community education about the depth and breadth of this condition is crucial for the identification and treatment of a growing problem. As with many psychologic conditions, identification of the disorder and treatment of the patient by the family physician comprise the primary treatment. Screening tools, treatment programs and self-help groups provide additional resources for the family physician. An illustrative case report demonstrates the importance of heightened awareness of and screening for this common condition.
Evidence suggests that physical results may be the least important criterion of successful management of maltreated children. Emotional, social, intellectual and personality development results should receive equal attention. The maltreated child may himself be a potential child-batterer and separation from his parents may not alter this prognosis. Professional ignorance, denial and collusion are all barriers to successful management, as are inadequate treatment facilities and a cumbersome legal system whose inappropriate priorities may readily produce tragedy.
