To test the hypothesis that low iron status or other nutritional deficiencies are associated with symptoms of depression in premenopausal women, the authors related blood indices of iron status to scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and responses to a mood adjective checklist. Participants recruited locally provided fasting blood samples and completed the MMPI during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Of 365 apparently healthy participants, 4% had hemoglobin < 120 g/L, 6% had transferrin saturation < 16%, 20% had ferritin < 12 micrograms/L, and 8% had clinically elevated scores (T > or = 70) on the Depression scale of the MMPI. The frequency of elevated MMPI Depression scores was unrelated to the frequency of low hemoglobin, transferrin saturation, or ferritin. The results do not support the hypothesis that low iron status contributes to symptoms of depression in women.
To evaluate the construct validity (convergent and divergent) of the Sivik Psycho Somaticism test (SPS) and test of Operationality (OPER), Pearson correlation coefficients between SPS scales and subscales, OPER and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) subscales Hypochondria (Hs), Depression (D), Hysteria (Hy) and Alexithymia (Al) were calculated. Eighty-eight healthy individuals and 285 psychosomatic patients completed the SPS and OPER tests and MMPI; Hs, D, Hy and Al. The results show that most of the SPS subscales and OPER are significantly correlated to several MMPI subscales in both a normal and a psychosomatic population. The results are in concordance with the theoretical hypotheses and confirm the validity of the SPS and OPER constructs.
The purpose of this study was to show the similarities and differences in like-sex and unlike-sex parent-adolescent modeling. Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventories were administered to male and female adolescents and their mothers upon admission of the adolescents to the St. Joseph Hospital Children and Youth Center. Comparisons of profiles and correlational data showed that the mother-daughter profiles were very similar but the mother-son profiles were dissimilar. Furthermore, repeat testing of the adolescents showed that the mother-daughter profiles became progressively dissimilar as treatment progressed. The similarities were explained in terms of like-sex modeling and the decrease in similarity was attributed to the impact of the treatment program on the female adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Chronic subcutaneous rIL-2 at low doses produces long-lasting immunomodulatory effects and is considered an effective treatment for renal cell carcinoma with marginal activity in malignant melanoma and colorectal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study we evaluated, by Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the psychological changes induced by rIL-2 in 10 patients with advanced tumors. RESULTS: After 3 months of rIL-2 treatment, 80% of the patients had a significantly increased score on the clinical scale of depression (D) and psychasthenia (Pt) (p<0.01), 70% on the scale of conversion hysteria (Hy) and 60% on the scales of schizophrenia (Sc) and psychopathic deviate (Pd), (p<0.05). These MMPI changes were however not paralleled by disease progression or clinical-overt psychological disease. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that low-dose rIL-2 is a psychoactive treatment, which deserves psychological monitoring The MMPI is feasible for the evaluation of subclinical psychological modifications induced by cytokine immunotherapy.
Twenty-one women and four men who had been operated upon for thoracic outlet syndrome were evaluated for symptom relief, and the results were blindly correlated with their scores on a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Of the 14 patients who had abnormal results on the MMPI, five rated themselves improved, seven unchanged, and two worse as a result of surgery. Of the 11 patients who had a normal MMPI, ten rated themselves improved and one unchanged (P less than .05). Patients were then divided into two groups--those who were improved and those who were not improved by surgery--and mean MMPI scale scores were obtained for each group. There were significant differences for MMPI scales 1 and 3 (P less than .05).
Patients with left hemisphere disease have been noted to be depressed while those with right hemisphere disease appear indifferent. While patients with left hemisphere disease frequently have a greater cognitive deficit, patients with right hemisphere disease have difficulty in expressing affectively intoned speech. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) can demonstrate underlying affective experience and is not dependent on affectively intoned speech. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a difference in affective moods, as assessed by the MMPI, was related to laterality of lesion in patients matched for severity of cognitive and motor dysfunction. Seven of the 16 subjects with left hemisphere dysfunction and none of the eight subjects with right hemisphere dysfunction showed an elevation on the depression scale. This observation not only confirms previous clinical observations but also demonstrates that these asymmetries cannot be ascribed completely to hemisphere-related differences in cognitive deficits or expressive abilities.
Different stress disorders, including the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), developed as the consequence of traumatic stress experience, represent the most frequent patterns of reactive mental disorders of the soldiers in war. Clinical picture of those events has mostly been described in details in the literature, but the search for simple and reliable methods of detection still lasts. The aim of this study was to determine psychological profile and value of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) for the detection and description of PTSD in psychotraumatized examinees. It was investigated totally 119 soldiers--the participants of combat actions in the area of former Yugoslavia, among whom 71 examines formed part of clinical group that manifested symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, and control group consisted of 48 war participants, but without psychopatologic consequences. The investigation was performed by application of MMPI-personality test (form MMPI-201). Significant differences between clinical and control groups of examinees were determined, which confirmed the value of that inventory in the detection of PTSD symptoms. The most discriminative value was noticed in the next test scales: atypical behavior (F), depression (D), and paranola (Pa), that was also observed in relevant foreign studies carried in war veterans.
One hundred six patients with disc herniation who underwent lumbar laminectomy and discectomy and 51 patients with spinal stenosis who underwent decompressive lumbar laminectomy were evaluated for surgical outcome at least 1 year postoperatively (mean: 18 months). All had completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) as part of the preoperative evaluation. The Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), Hysteria (Hy), Psychopathic Deviate (Pd), Psychasthenia (Pt), and Schizophrenia (Sc) scales were found to be predictive of surgical outcome in the herniation group. However, no MMPI scale was related to outcome in the stenosis group. Analysis of covariance showed this fact to be related to the differences in age between the two groups of patients, rather than a result of the differing diagnoses. The MMPI appears to be more useful in predicting surgical outcome in the young and middle-aged adult patient population with disc herniation and is not of predictive utility in the older stenosis population.
Self-report plays a primary but not exclusive role in pain assessment. As is true of all self-reported experiences, under certain circumstances, the report of chronic pain can be distorted and misrepresented. There are unique challenges associated with the detection and assessment of malingering or self-report distortion in the evaluation of chronic pain. The current paper provides a rationale for the use of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) in the comprehensive assessment of chronic pain with an emphasis on the advantage the MMPI-2 provides in the detection of response bias or malingering. A critical review of available MMPI-2 validity scales is presented, and recommendations for use of these scales in the evaluation of patients with chronic pain are made.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the incidence of hypospadias and its effects on psychosexual development in a sample of 11,649 young Italian males. Over the last 30 years only about 30 major publications have addressed these issues and the results of many studies have been contrasting. Some defects in methodology, such as low response rates, heterogeneity of age ranges and the choice of controls, have been the main limitations. Our study was designed to take these problems into account. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two hypospadic subjects and a random sample of 500 nonaffected males selected from the large sample of 11,649 young men (>90% of the 18-year-old males living in the Italian region of Tuscany) were screened by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) test, psychological interview and clinical evaluation. RESULTS: The incidence of hypospadias in this representative group of Italian men is 3.6/1,000. No difference was noted in the percentage with altered MMPI compared with the control group. The age at surgical corrections and the number of operations are not related to an abnormal global psychological adjustment. Severity of disease influences a more negative genital appraisal and the number of operations is correlated only with more difficulty in initiating contact with the opposite sex. CONCLUSIONS: Surgery for hypospadias has to be strongly pursued in as many cases as possible. In addition, we strongly recommend following up all hypospadics, independently of the severity of their genital malformations, through adolescence to early adulthood, to ensure early detection of subjects with impaired psychological profiles.
Two hundred and seventy-two mainly nonpsychotic psychiatric outpatients between 19 and 59 years of age were divided into various clinical groups according to DSM-III: pure major depression, major depression in combination with various anxiety disorders, pure anxiety disorders and a group with other mental disorders. The groups were compared as to differences in personality traits assessed by means of the Basic Character Inventory. The mixed major depression/non-panic anxiety disorder group appeared to be the most deviant with more oral-neurotic personality traits in addition to obsessive traits, while the pure major depressive disorder and the pure anxiety disorder group were less disturbed. Especially cases with non-panic-anxiety features in addition to major depression were those which manifested a neurotic obsessive personality structure. These findings imply that it is important to distinguish between major depression cases with and without various anxiety disorders.
