Folie à Deux in the aged: variations in psychopathology.

The etiology of Folie à Deux remains a controversial topic; the relationship between the psychopathology exhibited by the dominant partner and that shown by the submissive one being particularly unclear. Modern etiological theories attempt to reduce the phenomena of Folie à Deux to a procrustean mould, emphasizing in particular the contribution of schizophrenic pathology to the development of the condition. A case is described which raises doubts about the general applicability of this approach.

Folie simultanée in monozygotic twins.

OBJECTIVE: To present a case report of folie simultanée in monozygotic twins. The literature describing folie à deux in twins is also reviewed and the common clinical findings are presented. METHOD: Case presentation and review of the literature. RESULTS: Clinical observations of monozygotic twins with folie simultanée suggest that the delusions tend to progress over time with each twin reinforcing the delusion in the second. CONCLUSIONS: The concept of a delusion resonating between individuals may account for the rapid progression and escalation of these delusions.

Suicide pact in a setting of Folie à Deux.

A case of folie à deux affecting two women friends who presented as a suicide pact is described. The shared delusion was based on their life situation and experiences. Social intervention and obtaining employment led to marked attenuation of the delusion in both partners simultaneously and while in close contact. Review of the relevant literature revealed striking theoretical similarities between folie à deux and suicidal pacts suggesting the ease with which the former could become the foundation for the latter.

A case-report is presented of folie simultanée in a pair of female monozygotic twins with onset at the remarkable age of 81.
