Scalability simulations for nanomemory systems integrated on the molecular scale.

Simulations were performed to assess the prospective performance of a 16 Kbit nanowire-based electronic nanomemory system. Commercial off-the-shelf microcomputer system modeling software was applied to evaluate the operation of an ultra-dense storage array. This array consists of demonstrated experimental non-volatile nanowire diode switches, plus encoder-decoder structures consisting of demonstrated experimental nanowire-based nanotransistors, with nanowire interconnects among all the switching devices. The results of these simulations suggest that a nanomemory of this type can be operated successfully at a density of 10(11) bits/cm(2). Furthermore, modest device alterations and system design alternatives are suggested that might improve the performance and the scalability of the nanomemory array. These simulations represent early steps toward the development of a simulation-based methodology to guide nanoelectronic system design in a manner analogous to the way such methodologies are used to guide microelectronic system design in the silicon industry.

Object-oriented biological system integration: a SARS coronavirus example.

MOTIVATION: The importance of studying biology at the system level has been well recognized, yet there is no well-defined process or consistent methodology to integrate and represent biological information at this level. To overcome this hurdle, a blending of disciplines such as computer science and biology is necessary. RESULTS: By applying an adapted, sequential software engineering process, a complex biological system (severe acquired respiratory syndrome-coronavirus viral infection) has been reverse-engineered and represented as an object-oriented software system. The scalability of this object-oriented software engineering approach indicates that we can apply this technology for the integration of large complex biological systems. AVAILABILITY: A navigable web-based version of the system is freely available at http://people.musc.edu/~zhengw/SARS/Software-Process.htm

Multi-platforms medical computer systems integration.

Presently, software architects face the challenge of integrating and linking different application software packages built on different computer platforms. Often they inherit various systems, ranging from mainframe to PDA-based applications. The first stage before programming different interfaces is to identify the means of communications most suitable for particular systems. The experience of the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, which combines a hospital, a healthcare network, a research center and a medical school, illustrates common problems faced by a number of medical institutions. This paper will discuss the various options, including the Internet, software architects have, and how they can use them during the development of an infrastructure for health care systems.

An integrated system for the production of field shaping devices in radiotherapy.

A system has been developed in our department that simplifies the production processes of field shaping devices in radiotherapy, integrating an image grabbing and processing facility at a radiotherapy simulator and an automated block cutter. The data acquisition subsystem captures images, processes and corrects them for pincushion distortions, creates a composite radiograph, records user defined contours of blocks and exports data to the block cutter controller. A robotic subsystem drives and controls the polystyrene cutting unit. The system has been experimentally evaluated. Errors in contour definition were found to be less than 1 mm for a broad range of gantry angles and not exceeding 1.5 mm for those gantry orientations that present maximum magnetic field related image intensifier distortion, while the automated block cutter is capable of cutting out contours in polystyrene with an accuracy comparable to that of commercially available systems. The system is expected to contribute to the overall improvement of radiotherapy processes, particularly in low budget radiotherapy departments, introducing improvements in accuracy and efficiency at minimum costs.

System integration and DICOM image creation for PET-MR fusion.

This article demonstrates a gateway system for converting image fusion results to digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) objects. For the purpose of standardization and integration, we have followed the guidelines of the Integrated Healthcare Enterprise technical framework and developed a DICOM gateway. The gateway system combines data from hospital information system, image fusion results, and the information generated itself to constitute new DICOM objects. All the mandatory tags defined in standard DICOM object were generated in the gateway system. The gateway system will generate two series of SOP instances of each PET-MR fusion result; SOP (Service Object Pair) one for the reconstructed magnetic resonance (MR) images and the other for position emission tomography (PET) images. The size, resolution, spatial coordinates, and number of frames are the same in both series of SOP instances. Every new generated MR image exactly fits with one of the reconstructed PET images. Those DICOM images are stored to the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) server by means of standard DICOM protocols. When those images are retrieved and viewed by standard DICOM viewing systems, both images can be viewed at the same anatomy location. This system is useful for precise diagnosis and therapy.

Phase space structure and chaotic scattering in near-integrable systems.

We investigate the bifurcation phenomena and the change in phase space structure connected with the transition from regular to chaotic scattering in classical systems with unbounded dynamics. The regular systems discussed in this paper are integrable ones in the sense of Liouville, possessing a degenerated unstable periodic orbit at infinity. By means of a McGehee transformation the degeneracy can be removed and the usual Melnikov method is applied to predict homoclinic crossings of stable and unstable manifolds for the perturbed system. The chosen examples are the perturbed radial Kepler problem and two kinetically coupled Morse oscillators with different potential parameters which model the stretching dynamics in ABC molecules. The calculated subharmonic and homoclinic Melnikov functions can be used to prove the existence of chaotic scattering and of elliptic and hyperbolic periodic orbits, to calculate the width of the main stochastic layer and of the resonances, and to predict the range of initial conditions where singularities in the scattering function are found. In the second example the value of the perturbation parameter at which channel transitions set in is calculated. The theoretical results are supplemented by numerical experiments.

G-InforBIO: integrated system for microbial genomics.

BACKGROUND: Genome databases contain diverse kinds of information, including gene annotations and nucleotide and amino acid sequences. It is not easy to integrate such information for genomic study. There are few tools for integrated analyses of genomic data, therefore, we developed software that enables users to handle, manipulate, and analyze genome data with a variety of sequence analysis programs. RESULTS: The G-InforBIO system is a novel tool for genome data management and sequence analysis. The system can import genome data encoded as eXtensible Markup Language documents as formatted text documents, including annotations and sequences, from DNA Data Bank of Japan and GenBank encoded as flat files. The genome database is constructed automatically after importing, and the database can be exported as documents formatted with eXtensible Markup Language or tab-deliminated text. Users can retrieve data from the database by keyword searches, edit annotation data of genes, and process data with G-InforBIO. In addition, information in the G-InforBIO database can be analyzed seamlessly with nine different software programs, including programs for clustering and homology analyses. CONCLUSION: The G-InforBIO system simplifies genome analyses by integrating several available software programs to allow efficient handling and manipulation of genome data. G-InforBIO is freely available from the download site.

Deciphering the hippocampal polyglot: the hippocampus as a path integration system.

Hippocampal 'place' cells and the head-direction cells of the dorsal presubiculum and related neocortical and thalamic areas appear to be part of a preconfigured network that generates an abstract internal representation of two-dimensional space whose metric is self-motion. It appears that viewpoint-specific visual information (e.g. landmarks) becomes secondarily bound to this structure by associative learning. These associations between landmarks and the preconfigured path integrator serve to set the origin for path integration and to correct for cumulative error. In the absence of familiar landmarks, or in darkness without a prior spatial reference, the system appears to adopt an initial reference for path integration independently of external cues. A hypothesis of how the path integration system may operate at the neuronal level is proposed.

PACS workstation respecification: display, data flow, system integration, and environmental issues, derived from analysis of the Conquest Hospital pre-DICOM PACS experience.

This paper is based on 4 years of practical experience with a developmental pre- Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) picture archiving and communication system (PACS) plus analysis from the respecification study data for a DICOM/HTML PACS replacement. High-performance, but economic, workstations are required within PACS for radiologists to rapidly and accurately report images. For economic reasons such workstations should utilise standard landscape orientation monitors. They must have full Radiology Information System (RIS) integrated reporting functionality to optimise radiologists' work. The workstations must also be capable of displaying request data and both new and associated old images and image reports from multiple modalities. All images should be imported as "folders" according to semi-intelligent "knowledge table" based DICOM 3.0 standard Worklist control exerted by image management servers. This information can be obtained by relevant image lists and decision charts. A description of an optimal standard monitor workstation environment and related issues based on experience and literature review is given.

Progressive integrated system for the rehabilitation of long-term schizophrenic patients.

An integrative stepwise rehabilitation model for schizophrenics, especially those hospitalized for long periods, is described. The basic entities of this model are rehabilitation homes. The client moves from one step to the next according to their particular needs. The steps for living are: small homes, supported lodgings, rented quarters and own apartments. The steps of activities are: day care homes and day clubs, therapeutic sheltered workshop, test working, vocational training and labour market. The central rehabilitative aspects are the therapeutic community, living learning experiences, supporting of selfesteem and integrating with the social network. The psychiatric care system on the other hand and an important work of volunteers and friend services on the other support the rehabilitation. This work has shown during 14 years that the majority of clients can be rehabilitated to live as fairly independent and responsible persons.
