Population movement in Indonesia since 1971.

"This paper attempts to overview and assess developments in the scale, types and impact of population mobility in Indonesia since 1971." Difficulties concerning the availability of data are first considered. "Using qualitative and quantitative information from a range of sources it is evident in this paper that population mobility in Indonesia has a level, scale and complexity that belies the conventional stereotyping of most Indonesians as being highly immobile, scarcely travelling beyond the well-trodden social space of their village and its immediate environs. There are many reasons to explain the increasing population movement; however, there is uncertainty surrounding future patterns of population movement in Indonesia."

The Indonesian transmigration program in historical perspective.

"The purpose of this paper is to look at what has been achieved by the transmigration program [in Indonesia], to examine the major problems that have arisen and to consider the present constraints which now cast some doubt upon the future of the program." A historical overview of government policies from 1905 to 1988 is provided, and problems of land supply, land use, and lack of funds are discussed. Data are from the 1961 and 1980 Indonesian censuses. (SUMMARY IN FRE AND SPA)

Land development and transmigrant farmers in Southern Sumatra, Indonesia.

"This paper discusses...the impact of land ownership on the transmigrant farmer's participation in new land development for irrigated paddy fields, taking Lampung Province (the pioneer settlement of the transmigration programme) as the specific area of reference. Special attention is focused on the case of the Way Rarem Irrigation Project in the northern part of Lampung, Southern Sumatra.... There is no evidence in this analysis to support the hypothesis that the income level of the farmer contributes to the progress of land development. The ethnicity or province of origin is also insignificant in its effect on land development. Similarly, transmigration status does not show any significant relation to land development." International labour migration statistics in Asia: an appraisal.

"The present paper attempts a critical review of the data systems of seven major labour-exporting countries--Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand--which account for over 90 per cent of labour outflows from Asia....Data...are discussed under separate sections focusing on limitations as well as potential for further exploitation.... For all countries reviewed here, these data significantly understate total labour outflows, and the magnitude of the error seems to vary between countries and reflect both differences relating to the coverage and efficiency of the approval and monitoring procedure. This throws serious doubts on the appropriateness of official outmigration series for cross country comparison. Frequent changes in reporting procedures also make for discrete changes and spurious shifts in data which render trend analysis quite hazardous." (SUMMARY IN FRE AND SPA)
