Quantitative relationships between pain intensities during labor and beta-endorphin and cortisol concentrations in plasma. Decline of the hormone concentrations in the early postpartum period.

In 38 women with uncomplicated vaginal delivery at term, the different pain intensities during spontaneous labor were correlated to the plasma beta-endorphin and cortisol concentrations simultaneously examined. The pain intensities subjectively assessed were numerically categorized. The women in labor categorized to pain intensities 0 to III were in comparable stages of cervical dilatation. The hormone concentrations were measured by means of radioimmunoassay. The lowest hormone levels were found after abolition of pains of labor by epidural anesthesia: beta-endorphin 42 pg/ml, cortisol 318 ng/ml (mean values). The hormone concentrations rose progressively with increasing intensities of labor pain. The highest concentrations were observed in the first few minutes after delivery i.e. immediately after cessation of the extreme pains of expulsive labor: beta-endorphin 118 pg/ml, cortisol 449 ng/ml. Statistically significant, positive correlations were calculated between beta-endorphin and cortisol concentrations in plasma and the self-reported pain intensities (p less than 0.001 and p less than 0.01 resp.). Thus, highly elevated beta-endorphin levels in plasma do not abolish pain, probably they modulate it. Within the first four hours postpartum the concentrations of the two stress-stimulated hormones dropped rapidly. The endorphin level fell from 118 pg/ml immediately after delivery to 38 pg/ml in the above mentioned period, the cortisol level from 449 ng/ml to 302 ng/ml. One to three days after delivery the beta-endorphin and cortisol concentrations in maternal plasma were largely normalized, this means they then approximately corresponded to the values being found in nonpregnant women under normal conditions.

Relative ammonia concentrations, dust concentrations, and presence of Salmoneua species and Escherichia coli inside and outside commercial layer facilities.

Three air contaminants that may have serious health consequences to humans and poultry are ammonia, dust, and aerosolized bacteria. This study measured ammonia concentrations, dust concentrations, and the presence or absence of aerosolized Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli inside and outside five commercial layer facilities. The average outside ammonia concentration measurements decreased as the distance from the facility increased from 10 to 40 ft. The measurements at 10 ft from the facilities were consistently higher than the average concentrations inside the facilities. The ammonia measurement trends inside of the facilities were affected by the temperature-dependent ventilation systems. Average dust concentrations inside the five facilities were consistently below 2 mg/m3. Three facilities also experienced average outside dust concentrations at all measured distances below 2 mg/m3. Two facilities had relatively high average dust measurements at 10 ft from ventilation fans (32.12 mg/m3 and 75.18 mg/m3). Escherichia coli and Salmonella were isolated from the air inside all five facilities and outside the facilities up to 40 ft from the ventilation fans. In condusion, dust concentrations may pose the largest risk to human and animal health at 10 ft away from the poultry facilities; risks associated with ammonia inhalation are greatest inside facilities during the coolest months of the year; and aerosolized bacteria are found inside and outside poultry facilities, but further work is needed to quantify the bacteria to further assess the health risk related to this issue.

Effects of castration and testosterone replacement on peritoneal histamine concentration and lung histamine concentration in pubertal male rats.

Mast cells, which are the main source of histamine, are significantly affected by sex steroids. The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of bilateral castration and testosterone replacement on peritoneal histamine concentration and lung histamine concentration in pubertal male rats (Wistar strain). Three groups of animals were used in this study: (1) untreated castrated animals, (2) castrated animals subjected to androgen replacement by injection of propionate of testosterone, and (3) intact males as a control group. Castration alone produced a dramatic reduction in peritoneal histamine concentration. In addition, androgen replacement was effective in restoring the histamine concentration to the normal value detected in the control males (P<0.05, Kruskal-Wallis test). On the other hand, there was no significant variation in the lung histamine concentration between control males, untreated castrated males and castrated males that received androgen replacement (P<0.05, Kruskal-Wallis test). These results demonstrate for the first time that castration markedly reduces the peritoneum histamine concentration in pubertal male rats, and testosterone replacement prevents the decrease. Further, these procedures do not affect lung histamine concentration, demonstrating that mast cells from different tissues may respond differently to the same biological factors.

Anthropometry, glucose tolerance, and insulin concentrations in Indian children: relationships to maternal glucose and insulin concentrations during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the environment experienced by fetuses of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and mothers with higher glucose concentrations that are in the normal range causes increased adiposity and altered glucose/insulin metabolism in childhood. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Children (n = 630) whose mothers were tested for glucose tolerance during pregnancy had detailed anthropometry performed at birth and annually thereafter. At 5 years, plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were measured in the children (2-h oral glucose tolerance test) and their fathers (fasting samples only). RESULTS: Newborns of diabetic mothers (n = 41) were larger in all body measurements than control newborns (babies with nondiabetic parents). At 1 year, these differences had diminished and were not statistically significant. At 5 years, female offspring of diabetic mothers had larger subscapular and triceps skinfold thicknesses (P = 0.01) and higher 30- and 120-min insulin concentrations (P < 0.05) than control children. Offspring of diabetic fathers (n = 41) were lighter at birth than control children (P < 0.001); they showed no differences in anthropometry at 5 years. In control children, skinfold thickness and 30-min insulin concentrations were positively related to maternal insulin area under the curve, and skinfold thicknesses were related to paternal fasting insulin concentrations independently of the parents' skinfold thickness and socioeconomic status. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal GDM is associated with adiposity and higher glucose and insulin concentrations in female offspring at 5 years. The absence of similar associations in offspring of diabetic fathers suggests a programming effect in the diabetic intrauterine environment. More research is needed to determine whether higher maternal glucose concentrations in the nondiabetic range have similar effects.

Effects of feeding aspirin and supplemental vitamin E on plasma concentrations of 3-methylindole, 3-methyleneindolenine-adduct concentrations in blood and pulmonary tissues, lung lesions, and growth performance in feedlot cattle.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of feeding aspirin and supplemental vitamin E on growth performance, lung lesions, plasma concentrations of 3-methylindole (3MI), and 3-methyleneindolenine (3MEIN)-adduct concentrations in blood and pulmonary tissues of feedlot cattle. ANIMALS: 256 crossbred steers; 64 cattle were used in experiment 1 and 192 cattle were used in experiment 2. PROCEDURES: A 2 X 2 factorial design was used for each experiment. Treatment factors were aspirin (0 or 3 g daily) and vitamin E (200 or 1,500 IU daily). Steers were housed in pens (8 steers/pen). Steers were slaughtered on days 59 and 138 for experiments 1 and 2, respectively. Lungs were grossly evaluated. 3MEIN-adduct concentrations were determined, and blood and pulmonary tissues. RESULTS: Treatment was not associated with improvement or adverse effects on weight gain, dry-matter intake, or feed efficiency in experiment 2. In experiment 1, 36 of 63 (57.1%) steers had lung lesions. Lesions were not associated with treatment or concentrations of 3MI and 3MEIN-adduct. Plasma 3MI concentration and concentrations of 3MEIN-adduct in blood and pulmonary tissues were 3.11 microg/mL, 0.51 U/microg of protein, and 0.49 U/microg of protein, respectively. Aspirin was associated with increased blood concentrations of 3MEIN-adduct for diets that did not contain supplemental vitamin E. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Differences n performance of feedlot steers were not associated with treatment diet. It is possible that concurrent exposure of feedlot cattle to other factors typically associated with development of respiratory tract disease would affect these findings.

Effects of hypothyroidism and withholding of feed on plasma lipid concentrations, concentration and composition of very-low-density lipoprotein, and plasma lipase activity in horses.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate selected concentrations of blood lipids and lipase activities in euthyroid and hypothyroid horses deprived of feed for 96 hours. ANIMALS: 4 healthy adult mares and 4 thyroidectomized adult mares. PROCEDURE: Horses were deprived of feed for 96 hours. Blood samples were collected at 24-hour intervals and analyzed to determine concentrations of non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) as well as composition of VLDL. Plasma lipase activities were measured after feed was withheld for 96 hours and 12 days after resumption of feeding. RESULTS: Time significantly affected plasma NEFA, VLDL, TG, and TC concentrations in both groups of horses. During the 96-hour period, mean plasma concentrations of NEFA and VLDL increased 10-fold in euthyroid horses and increased 5-fold and 9-fold, respectively, in hypothyroid horses. Mean plasma TG concentrations increased 8-fold in both groups, and plasma TC concentrations significantly increased by 33 and 30%, respectively. Composition of VLDL was significantly affected by feed deprivation in euthyroid horses. Activities of lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase were significantly higher in feed-deprived horses. Activity of hepatic lipase was significantly lower in hypothyroid horses than in euthyroid horses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hypothyroidism did not significantly alter the magnitude of the response of blood lipids to feed deprivation. Thyroid hormones may reduce variability in blood lipid concentrations but do not determine susceptibility to hyperlipemia. Hypothyroidism does not appear to be a factor in the pathogenesis of hyperlipemia in horses.

Physical characteristics, blood hormone concentrations, and plasma lipid concentrations in obese horses with insulin resistance.

OBJECTIVE: To compare obese horses with insulin resistance (IR) with nonobese horses and determine whether blood resting glucose, insulin, leptin, and lipid concentrations differed between groups and were correlated with combined glucose-insulin test (CGIT) results. ANIMALS: 7 obese adult horses with IR (OB-IR group) and 5 nonobese mares. PROCEDURES: Physical measurements were taken, and blood samples were collected after horses had acclimated to the hospital for 3 days. Response to insulin was assessed by use of the CGIT, and maintenance of plasma glucose concentrations greater than the preinjection value for > or = 45 minutes was used to define IR. Area under the curve values for glucose (AUC(g)) and insulin (AUC(i)) concentrations were calculated. RESULTS: Morgan, Paso Fino, Quarter Horse, and Tennessee Walking Horse breeds were represented in the OB-IR group. Mean neck circumference and BCS differed significantly between groups and were positively correlated with AUC values. Resting insulin and leptin concentrations were 6 and 14 times as high, respectively, in the OB-IR group, compared with the nonobese group, and were significantly correlated with AUC(g) and AUC(i). Plasma nonesterified fatty acid, very low-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations were significantly higher (86%, 104%, and 29%, respectively) in OB-IR horses, and HDL-C concentrations were positively correlated with AUC values. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Measurements of neck circumference and resting insulin and leptin concentrations can be used to screen obese horses for IR. Dyslipidemia is associated with IR in obese horses.

Comparison of circulating concentrations of reproductive hormones in boars of lines selected for size of testes or number of ovulations and embryonal survival to concentrations in respective control lines.

The objectives of this study were to determine whether circulating concentrations of genadotropins and gonadal hormones of boars were altered as a result of selection of pigs for size of testes or for embryonal survival and(or) number of ovulations. Included in Exp. 1 and 2 were boars with the greatest estimated paired weight of testes (TS) and boars from a control (C) line. Concentrations of FSH were similar (P > .10) in boars from the TS and C lines. In Exp. 3, 4, and 5, circulating concentrations of FSH and 17 beta-estradiol (E2) were evaluated in neonates, during pubertal development, and in mature boars of lines selected for an index of number of ovulations and embryonal survival (I), and data were compared to those for boars from a respective C line. Concentrations of E2 were not different in boars from the I line and those from the C line during the early neonatal period but were greater (P < .05) in boars of the C line than in those from the I line during pubertal development. Concentrations of FSH were greater (P < .05) in mature boars from the I line than in those from the C line. In summary, selection for size of testes did not influence circulating concentrations of FSH in mature boars. The secretory pattern of E2 in boars before puberty changed as a result of selection for embryonal survival and number of ovulations in females of the I line, and the different patterns of circulating E2 early in life may result in enhanced circulating concentrations of FSH in adult boars of the I line compared with boars of the C line.

Effects of protein concentration and source on nutrient digestibility by mature steers limit-fed high-concentrate diets.

Five ruminally fistulated 3-yr-old mature Holstein steers (average BW 691+/-23 kg) were used in a 5 x 5 Latin square experiment with a 2 x 2 + 1 fact orial arrangement of treatments. Effects of protein concentration and protein source on nutrient digestibility, excretion of DM and fecal N, ruminal fluid volume and dilution rate, ruminal characteristics, and in situ DM disappearance of whole shelled corn, ground corn, and orchardgrass hay were measured in steers limit-fed high-concentrate diets at 1.5% of BW. A negative control basal diet (NC; 9% CP) was supplemented to achieve either 11 or 14% CP; supplemental CP was either from soybean meal (11 and 14% SBM) or a 50:50 ratio of CP from urea and soybean meal (11 and 14% U). Dry matter and OM digestibilities were 5% greater (P < .07) for steers fed the SBM diets than for those fed the U diets. Starch digestibility did not differ (P > .10) among steers fed any of the diets. Nitrogen source did not affect (P > .10) apparent N digestibility or fecal N excretion; however, steers fed the NC diet had the lowest (P < .10) apparent N digestibility compared with those fed all other diets. Ruminal fluid volume was lower (P < .06) when steers were fed the NC diet compared with all other diets; there were no differences (P > .74) among diets for ruminal fluid dilution rate. In general, ruminal ammonia N and VFA molar proportions were not affected by protein source or concentration. Although CP concentration affected (P < .06) in situ DM disappearance of ground corn, CP concentration did not (P > .48) affect total tract digestion of DM or OM. This indicates that CP concentration may have affected site of digestion, but not extent of digestion. When mature ruminants were limit-fed a corn-based diet to meet primarily a maintenance function, protein source and concentration had little effect on measures of nutrient digestion.

[Serum concentration of type IV collagen in urological cancer--comparison with serum concentration of laminin].

In recent years, it has become clear that various extracellular substrates play an important role in the process of invasion and metastasis of malignant tumors. In a previous study, we reported that the serum concentration of laminin in renal cell carcinoma and prostate cancer is elevated, and furthermore, is remarkably high in patients with metastasis. However, in bladder cancer, this level is elevated only in those with metastasis, indicating that the serum concentration of laminin is useful as a marker for metastasis or clinical progression of the malignant tumor. In the present study, we measured the serum concentration of type IV collagen 7S-domain, which, as laminin constructs the basement membrane, and compared the result with the serum concentration of laminin, to evaluate the clinical significance of the findings. The serum concentration of type IV collagen 7S-domain was not elevated significantly in any tumor type, although the serum concentration of laminin was elevated in patients with renal cell carcinoma, prostate cancer and bladder cancer with metastasis. There were no significant differences in the serum concentration of type IV collagen 7S-domain in any group with metastasis.

Study of the effect of total serum protein and albumin concentrations on canine fructosamine concentration.

The relationship among serum fructosamine concentration and total serum protein and albumin concentrations were evaluated in healthy and sick dogs (diabetics and dogs with insulinoma were not included). Fructosamine was determined using a commercial colorimetric nitroblue tetrazolium method applied to the Technicon RA-500 (Bayer). Serum fructosamine concentration was not correlated to total protein in normoproteinemic (r = 0.03) and hyperproteinemic dogs (r = 0.29), but there was a high correlation (r = 0.73) in hypoproteinemic dogs. Similar comparison between serum fructosamine and albumin concentrations showed middle correlation (r = 0.49) in normoalbuminemic dogs and high degree of correlation (r = 0.67) in hypoalbuminemic dogs. These results showed the importance of recognizing serum glucose concentration as well as total serum protein and albumin concentrations in the assay of canine serum fructosamine concentration.

Maternal serum leptin concentrations do not correlate with cord blood leptin concentrations in normal pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a difference in maternal leptin concentration and cord blood concentration, consistent with the hypothesis of a noncommunicating, two-compartement model of fetoplacental leptin regulation. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 139 women, identified as having an uncomplicated pregnancy, from an antecubital vein at delivery. Cord blood samples were taken from the umbilical vein. Leptin was measured by radioimmunoassay, and its relationship to fetal and maternal anthropometrics was assessed by Spearman correlation. Differences in maternal and cord blood leptin levels between male and female infants were tested with the Mann-Whitney Utest. Maternal and cord blood leptin were compared by the Wilcoxon signed rank test. The outcome measures were maternal and cord blood leptin at delivery, fetal birth weight, length, weight/length ratio, and ponderal index, maternal prepregnancy body mass index, pregnancy weight gain, relative weight gain, and body mass index at delivery. RESULTS: No correlations were found between maternal and cord blood leptin concentrations. Fetal leptin level correlated with birth weight (rho = 0.665; P <.0001), length (rho = 0.490; P <.0001), ponderal index (rho = 0.260; P =.002), and weight/length ratio (rho = 0.625; P <.0001). Median leptin concentrations were higher in female (9.3 ng/mL, range 1.5-34.4 ng/mL) than in male (8.2 ng/mL, range 1.6-38.3 ng/mL) neonates, but this difference was statistically not significant. Logistic regression analysis showed a significant influence on umbilical venous leptin concentration for birth weight (P <.0001) but not for gender. Maternal leptin concentrations were significantly higher than cord leptin concentrations (P <.0005 for the male and female neonates and the entire group). CONCLUSION: There was no correlation between maternal and cord leptin, which supports the hypothesis of a noncommunicating, two-compartment model of fetoplacental leptin regulation.

Serum homocysteine concentrations and their relation to serum folate and vitamin B12 concentrations and coronary artery disease prevalence in an urban, bi-ethnic community.

OBJECTIVE: To compare fasting serum total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations in a randomly selected sample of elderly (> or = 65 years of age) Hispanic and non-Hispanic White (NHW) men and women, to examine associations of tHcy with folate and vitamin B12, and then to correlate these with the prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in these 4 ethnic/ gender groups. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Equal numbers of Hispanic and NHW men and women were randomly selected from the Healthcare Financing Administration (Medicare) registrant list for Bernalillo County (Albuquerque), New Mexico, and asked to volunteer for a paid home interview, to be followed by a paid, comprehensive interview/examination covering health and health-related issues. INTERVENTIONS AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Serum concentrations of tHcy, folate, and vitamin B12 were determined and correlated with the prevalence of CHD, after adjusting for other CHD risk factors (age, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, dyslipidemia, adiposity). RESULTS: Men and Hispanics had higher serum tHcy concentrations compared to women and non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs), respectively. After adjusting for lower concentrations of serum folate and vitamin B12 in Hispanics, the differences between Hispanics and NHWs were no longer significant. There was a direct association between serum tHcy concentrations and the prevalence of CHD after adjusting for other known risk factors that was most significant in Hispanic women. CONCLUSIONS: The higher serum tHcy concentrations observed in Hispanics compared to NHWs can be explained by lower levels of serum folate and vitamin B12. A direct association between serum tHcy concentrations and prevalence of CHD was observed primarily in women, and was most significant in Hispanic women.

Serum uric acid concentrations in type 2 diabetes: its significant relationship to serum 1,5-anhydroglucitol concentrations.

OBJECTIVE: Serum uric acid concentrations in diabetics are well known to be significantly lower than those in non-diabetic subjects, due to increased its urinary clearance. Serum 1,5-anhydroglucitol concentrations are also specifically decreased in diabetics through the increased urinary excretion. To gain an insight into the idea that a common mechanism might be possible to work in reducing these serum substances, this study was conducted. METHODS: A total of 121 type 2 diabetic patients, 76 males and 45 females, were studied. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the independent association between potential predictor variables (mean blood pressure, body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin A1c, serum fructosamine, serum 1,5-anhydroglucitol, serum creatinine, serum total cholesterol, and serum triglycerides) and serum uric acid concentrations as the dependent variable. RESULTS: In the male subjects, serum 1,5-anhydroglucitol, serum creatinine and body mass index were the variables independently related to serum uric acid concentrations. In the female subjects, serum 1,5-anhydroglucitol and serum creatinine were the variables independently related to serum uric acid concentrations. CONCLUSION: Considering the glucosuria-related urinary excretion of 1,5-anhydroglucitol, a close positive association between serum uric acid and 1,5-anhydroglucitol concentrations strongly supports the idea that the reduction in serum uric acid concentrations is mediated by urinary glucose excretion in diabetics.

Insufficient oxygen concentration obtained at domiciliary controls of eighteen concentrators.

The oxygen concentration (O2%) produced by 12 type A concentrators, with a working time of 28-18,099 h, and 6 type B concentrators, with a working time of 0-3,033 h, was measured over a 12 month period in the user's home, at a flow rate of 2 l.min-1. One hundred and two measurements of O2% (mean 82.9), made at least once monthly by a visiting nurse, showed that type A concentrators were usually delivering less than 92% expected O2. Four concentrators were delivering less than 40% O2 after a working time of only 4,000 h. Sixty two measurements made by the manufacturer confirmed these findings (mean 86.8). The 18 measurements performed by the nurse on the type B concentrators showed expected O2% values (mean 93.1). Our study demonstrates the necessity of regular clinical and technical surveillance, at the user's home, during long-term domiciliary oxygen therapy and the need for the manufacturer to incorporate an alarm system monitoring the O2% into oxygen concentrators.

[Relation between the concentration of sodium and potassium in the erythrocytes of dairy cows and the concentration of these elements in the plasma and urine and the level of blood glucose].

Blood and urine samples of 180 dairy cows from 12 herds were examined. Sodium and potassium concentrations were determined in erythrocytes, whole blood, plasma, urine, and glucose concentration in blood: the interrelations were compared. Sodium and potassium concentrations in erythrocytes were 85.15 +/- 11.45 mmol/l, and 25.93 +/- 7.81 mmol/l, respectively. A statistically significant relation was found between sodium and potassium concentrations in erythrocytes (r = 0.3467+++) and the content of electrolyte in blood cells and in whole blood (Na: r = 0.5336+++; K: r = 0.3561+++). No statistically significant relation of intraerythrocyte concentration of both electrolytes was confirmed with respect to the other characteristics (sodium and potassium concentrations in plasma and urine, and glucose concentration in blood). In the conditions of routine laboratory diagnostics in clinically healthy cows, determinations of intraerythrocyte sodium and potassium do not broaden possibilities of evaluating the metabolic state of these electrolytes and cannot be used as the characteristics of energy insufficiency. The cannot replace the analyses performed in serum and urine.

[The effect of the AcD-AG stabilizer on the survival time and surface properties of fluid preserved platelet concentrates compared to concentrates from fresh blood].

In the present investigations the storage effect the AcD-AG stabilizer on thrombocytes is examined. The thrombocytokinetic parameters of 9 fresh blood concentrates and 15 concentrates of AcD-AG plasma containing platelets were determined. Storage time amounted to three days. The results show that storage with AcD-AG is only possible to a limited degree. On an average the survival time of the platelets was reduced to 2.7 +/- 1.1 days compared with 9.0 +/- 1.0 days of fresh blood concentrates. The recovery of the stored platelets amounted to 25.3 +/- 16.1%, that of the fresh blood concentrates to 63.3 +/- 23.6%. The spleen-heart quotients and those of the liver-heart or the surplus impulses over the spleen and liver respectively indicate that there is a predominant destruction in the spleen for those thrombocytes stored for three days. The liver is scarcely involved in this sequestration process. With 36.1% platelet yield was very low in concentrates gained from AcD-AG plasma containing platelets and having been stored for 3 days. In cases of emergency a clinical application of concentrates prepared in this way should not be given up. If being used, the greater requirement has to be taken into account. If the substitution therapy is continued, however, fresh blood concentrates have to be used as soon as possible.

The difference in EEG theta waves between concentrative and non-concentrative qigong states--a power spectrum and topographic mapping study.

The differences in EEG theta waves between concentrative and non-concentrative Qigong states were studied by means of power spectrum analysis and EEG mapping. The adult subjects included 20 practitioners of concentrative Qigong, 30 practitioners of non-concentrative Qigong and 23 control subjects. The results showed frontal mid-line theta rhythm was related to concentrative Qigong state. As the theta rhythm has been suggested to be one of the normal EEG patterns occurring in mental concentration, it is concluded that the theta rhythm is an indicator of mental concentration during Qigong state. This finding clarifies the implication of the theta rhythms appearing in Qigong and other meditation.
