Acute hunger of rat pups elicits increased kyphotic nursing and shorter intervals between nursing bouts: implications for changes in nursing with time postpartum.
Earlier findings, based on limited behavioral observations, indicate that nursing behavior in rats declines dramatically in duration over time postpartum-despite increasing ingestion of milk by rat pups to meet their growth and metabolic needs-although hungry pups elicit more nursing than do well-nourished pups. The authors compared the nursing pattern in detail for 6 hr on Days 7 and 14 and induced hunger in pups acutely with mammary-duct-ligated dams unable to provide milk. Compared with Day 7, on Day 14, supine nursing and the interval between nursing bouts increased, whereas hovering over pups and kyphotic nursing decreased. When pups were increasingly hungry, these age-related changes were counteracted. Thus, the ingestive motivation of pups largely regulates the nursing pattem over time.

Advanced practice nursing: merging the clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner roles.
Advanced practice nursing has taken a preeminent role in the recent reform of health care by fostering a perception of leadership, accountability, and responsibility in areas involving access to care, quality of care, and the cost of care. Despite this opportunity for recognition and advancement in the current healthcare system, variations in educational preparation, public confusion about the various roles and titles within advanced practice nursing, and differing professional certifications plague the opportunity for an elevated status of advanced practice nursing. In this article, the author addresses the issues related to merging the clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner roles. A review of the historical development of advanced practice nursing along with current practice issues and future needs is also presented.

[Curricular reform of undergraduate nursing--the Ribeirão Preto School of Nursing, the University of São Paulo. The Commission on Curriculum Restructuring of the Ribeirão Preto/USP School of Nursing].
The objective of the present study was to describe the process of curricular renovation for the undergraduate Nursing course developed by the Nursing School of Ribeirão Preto, USP, with emphasis on the following planning stages: diagnosis, educational objectives, selection and organization of content, curricular organization, curricular strategies, and curricular evaluation. In view of a diagnosis of current reality based on a philosophical-pedagogic approach which demonstrates the need to train general duty nurses, we present a conceptual framework directed at the view of man, community, health-sickness process, nursing, general duty nurses, competence, and curriculum. We propose a stronger emphasis on the teaching of biological and human sciences in the basic cycle, as well as on administrative aspects in sanitary and hospital activities. This curriculum covers the cycles of preprofessional and professional training to be offered over eight semesters in the undergraduate Nursing course at EERP-USP.

[The development of nursing knowledge: its contribution to nursing theory and nursing discipline].
The article focuses on Nursing knowledge and its development through an analysis of the current nursing literature. Various aspects are underlined and related to the Italian development of nursing discipline, the development of nursing in clinical practice and health care services. Some reflections are done on the development of nursing knowledge and the nursing discipline with focus on the woman's role.

The collaboration of public health nursing and primary care nursing in the development of a nurse managed health center.
Historically, public health nurses have been the cornerstone of keeping communities healthy. Ideally, primary care is the point of access for health care and nurse practitioners provide cost-effective, high quality primary care. It is a natural progression to build a nurse-managed health center on the foundation of public health nursing with primary care provided by nurse practitioners. Such collaboration produced the 11th Street Family Health Services of Drexel University serving the most vulnerable census tracts in Pennsylvania.
