Surgery on varicose veins in the early Ottoman period performed by Serefeddin Sabuncuoğlu.

Serefeddin Sabuncuoğlu, a pioneer of surgery, is known to be the author of first illustrated surgery textbook, Cerrahiyyetu'l Haniyye (Imperial Surgery), which was written in Turkish in 1465 AD at the age of 80 years. The purpose of this article is to describe his contributions to varicose vein surgery. In addition to vascular surgery, Serefeddin Sabuncuoğlu was interested in a wide range of surgical specialities including thoracic surgery, general surgery, pediatric surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, urologic surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology. His book was the first illustrated textbook of surgery in the Turkish medical literature, containing color illustrations of surgical procedures, incisions, and instruments. The book has been known of for only the past 60 years. There are 137 different medical observations and recommendations in Cerrahiyyetu'l Haniyye, along with translated passages from the works of Ebu Kasim-ul Zahravi (Albucasis), Al-Tasrif (Textbook of Surgery), including Sabuncuoğlu's additional original contributions. In chapter 90 of the book, Sabuncuoğlu describes lower extremity varices and their surgical treatment and provides a few color illustrations. Although not recognized and rewarded in his time, Serefeddin Sabuncuoğlu was a great surgeon in Turkish-Islamic medical history. This review demonstrates that his textbook, Cerrahiyyetu'l Haniyye, was the first illustrated textbook including various surgical procedures, incisions, and instruments of varicose vein surgery.

Stephen Rothman's text on physiology and biochemistry of the skin.

BACKGROUND: Forty-nine years ago the first complete and authoritative English text on the physiology and biochemistry of the skin was published by Stephen Rothman, an early basic researcher in dermatology. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the article is to learn more about Stephen Rothman and his 1954 text, to learn more about what was known and not known then, to learn more about what was considered significant, and to learn more about what was popular at that time. CONCLUSION: Considering the techniques available and the knowledge base, Rothman's 1954 text shows that basic dermatology research 50 years ago had developed to a reasonably sophisticated degree.

Current nursing courses and nursing textbooks.

This study has two parts. In the first part, current nursing courses in 18 baccalaureate nursing programs of Canada are examined to find out how traditional nursing courses have been changed. Major trends of nursing courses are identified, and two major types of current nursing courses are identified. In the second part, 16 nursing textbooks [child nursing (8); medical-surgical nursing (8)] are examined to see how they have changed to reflect the newer nursing curricula. Textbook and chapter content organizers commonly used in nursing textbooks are identified. Contents organizers currently used in nursing textbooks are argued to be ineffective for students' knowledge integration and knowledge development within the nursing profession. This position and its implications are discussed, and two approaches to developing textbooks are suggested.

Pediatric surgery between 1860 and 1900.

The twentieth century begins the modern era of pediatric surgery, a time of innovation and vastly improved operative survival. Until then, many correctable congenital anomalies had been described in case reports only as medical curiosities, seemingly having no chance for surgical cure, but the challenge was available to those wishing to accept. The first texts devoted to surgical diseases of infancy and childhood were descriptive, emphasizing visible and palpable lesions, tuberculosis, musculoskeletal deformity, and major trauma, but also recognized that "surgical diseases of children by their number, their variety, and their character must, we think, be studied in a special manner and demand a special chapter in surgical books." The construction of Children's Hospitals during the nineteenth century identified the need to provide special facilities for children. Surgical antisepsis was practiced and general anesthesia used. Physicians such as Hirschsprung recognized a wide spectrum of treatable surgical conditions that would soon become the domain of pediatric surgeons. Indeed, at that moment in time at the very beginning of the twentieth century, Roentgen discovered the x-ray, Ladd received his MD degree at Harvard, the first pediatric appendectomies for appendicitis were successfully performed, and Fredet and Ramstedt recognized that pyloroplasty was not the preferred treatment for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Modern pediatric surgery had passed from embryo to fetus to newborn.

Teaching of color in predoctoral and postdoctoral dental education in 1988.

This is a report of a 1988 survey of faculty involved in undergraduate and graduate programs concerning the teaching of color science. This survey indicates that the dental profession is making progress in color theory, application, and research in the dental curriculum. Manufacturers have been slow to respond to the needs of the profession. The majority of dentists surveyed indicated a need for the development of a new and systematic shade guide.

Frustrated readers at Khon Kaen Medical School.

Ability in English is essential for Thai medical students. 34 fifth-year students completed two cloze tests from two standard English language text-books to assess their comprehension. One of these tests was from a recommended text-book. 65% of students had poor understanding of the recommended text (Text A). Results were significantly better from the other text (Text B), but only one student had good understanding. The medical course needs more appropriate English teaching and more appropriate English text-books. More information is needed about which books students learn from.

IntroStat: a hypertext-based design for an electronic textbook to introduce biomedical statistics.

A hypertext-based system called IntroStat has been developed to introduce fundamental methods of biomedical statistics. The system has been developed on a Macintosh II using HyperCard. It is written mainly in Hypertalk, a scripting language of HyperCard. Being an electronic textbook of probability and statistics, the system features computational capabilities. At the end of the sections describing basic methods of statistics, pages are provided where a user may enter data and try the methods right there. Some means for branching are provided for easy access to a page of interest, including branching by contents, by index, and by keyword reference. The system design is proposed as a model of an electronic textbook for biomedical statistics.

A computer-based book on medical helminthology.

A computer assisted book on medical helminthology has been prepared using ZOOM, a teaching computer program, which uses hypermedia technology to link pictures and text. Information on various helminths, including their morphology, life cycle, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment and epidemiology can be easily accessed using three types of link in a non-linear approach. The book consists of five chapters, each contains the latest information on various aspects of helminth parasites. New information can easily be added to each chapter by the user. References can be assessed and updated for each parasite. The book is designed for students of medical schools, health administrators and physicians in developing countries.
