Adiponectin and glucose levels in women with negative or false positive glucose challenge test.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a correlation between adiponectin levels and glucose levels in women screened for gestational diabetes mellitus by means of a 50-g oral glucose challenge test, and to examine the difference in adiponectin levels between women who tested negative, and those who tested false positive. We further calculated the correlations between adiponectin levels and glucose levels, body mass index, gestational age and maternal age. METHODS: A case control study included 171 mothers with negative or false positive results in the 1-h 50-g glucose challenge test at 24-28 gestational weeks. Serum adiponectin levels were determined by radioimmunoassay at the time of the glucose challenge test. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between women who tested negative at screening, and those who tested false positive with respect to age, prepregnancy body weight and body mass index, and adiponectin levels. Correlation analysis showed adiponectin levels to be negatively correlated to glucose levels (r=-0.193, P=0.011). To examine the association between glucose levels, adiponectin levels and demographic variables, multiple linear regression analysis was carried out. Prepregnancy body mass index and age accounted for 14.6% of the variance in the glucose challenge test. Adiponectin levels did not contribute independently to the variation in glucose levels. A further multiple linear regression analysis was undertaken to investigate the association between adiponectin levels and age, prepregnancy body mass index and glucose levels in the glucose challenge test. In this regression model, prepregnancy body mass index and age explained 12.1% of the variance in adiponectin levels. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, our study indicated a negative correlation between adiponectin and glucose levels in women screened for gestational diabetes mellitus by a glucose challenge test. We further found that maternal age and body mass index were independent risk factors for a false positive glucose challenge test. Reduced adiponectin levels in women who tested false positive on the glucose challenge test were dependent on advanced age and higher body mass index.

Aortic stenosis is associated with elevated plasma levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA).

OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that the presence of aortic stenosis (AS) is associated with elevation of plasma levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), a physiological inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, a mediator and marker of endothelial dysfunction and an indicator of incremental cardiovascular risk. BACKGROUND: The presence of aortic sclerosis (ASC), the precursor of AS is independently associated both with endothelial dysfunction, and with incremental coronary event risk. It remains uncertain whether elevations of ADMA levels might mediate endothelial dysfunction in these conditions. METHODS: Forty two consecutive patients referred for echocardiography for evaluation of AS, who had calculated aortic valve areas of <1.4 cm(2) (AS group) were evaluated together with 42 consecutive age-matched referred patients (non-AS group). Plasma ADMA levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Determinants of elevation of plasma ADMA levels were identified via stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Plasma ADMA levels were not statistically different between the AS and non-AS group (median 0.59 vs 0.54 micromol/L, p=0.13, Mann-Whitney test) on univariate analysis. However, in backward stepwise multiple linear regression, the presence of AS was a significant predictor of elevated ADMA levels (p=0.04, 95% CI=0.001, 0.072). In addition, elevated plasma ADMA levels were also associated with history of atrial fibrillation (p=0.009, 95% CI=0.015, 0.100), and negatively associated with creatinine clearance (p=0.01, 95% CI=-0.002, 0.000), and the use of statin therapy (p=0.01, 95% CI=-0.081, -0.011). CONCLUSIONS: AS is independently associated with elevation of ADMA levels, beyond that implied by "conventional" risk factors for endothelial dysfunction. The clinical status of AS as an incremental marker of cardiovascular risk may reflect ADMA-mediated endothelial dysfunction.

Determinants of heart rate variability.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine clinical determinants of heart rate variability and to report normative reference values for eight heart rate variability measures. BACKGROUND: Although the clinical implications of heart rate variability have been described, clinical determinants and normative values of heart rate variability measures have not been studied systematically in a large community-based population. METHODS: The first 2 h of ambulatory electrocardiographic recordings obtained in Framingham Heart Study subjects attending a routine examination were reprocessed for heart rate variability. Recordings with transient or persistent nonsinus rhythm, premature beats > 10% of total beats, < 1-h recording time or processed time < 50% of recorded time were excluded; subjects receiving antiarrhythmic medications also were excluded. Among five frequency domain and three time domain measures that were obtained, low frequency power (0.04 to 0.15 Hz), high frequency power (0.15 to 0.40 Hz) and the standard deviation of total normal RR intervals based on 2-h recordings were selected for the principal analyses. Variables with potential physiologic effects or possible technical influences on heart rate variability measures were chosen for multiple linear regression analysis. Normative values, derived from a subset of healthy subjects, were adjusted for age and heart rate. RESULTS: There were 2,722 eligible subjects with a mean age (+/-SD) of 55 +/- 14 years. Three separate multiple linear regression analyses revealed that higher heart rate, older age, beta-adrenergic blocking agent use, history of myocardial infarction or congestive heart failure, diuretic use, diastolic blood pressure > or = 90 mm Hg, diabetes mellitus, consumption of three or more cups of coffee per day and smoking were associated with lower values of one or more heart rate variability measures, whereas longer processed time, start time in the morning, frequent supraventricular and ventricular premature beats, female gender and systolic blood pressure > or = 160 mm Hg were associated with higher values. Age and heart rate were the major determinants of all three selected heart rate variability measures (partial R2 values 0.125 to 0.389). Normative reference values for all eight heart rate variability measures are presented. CONCLUSIONS: Age and heart rate must be taken into account when assessing heart rate variability.

Associations between specific measures of vision and vision-related quality of life in patients with bothnia dystrophy, a defined type of retinitis pigmentosa.

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between objective tests of visual function and vision-related quality of life in patients with Bothnia dystrophy (BD), a retinal dystrophy of retinitis pigmentosa type with progressive maculopathy. METHODS: Forty-nine patients were tested. Weighted distance logMAR visual acuity (WVA), weighted logMAR low contrast VA (WCS), and binocular visual field (VF) areas were calculated. Vision-related quality of life (VRQL) was assessed using the 25-item National Eye Institute-Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25). Correlation statistics were used and adjusted analyses of the relationship between the composite score and the objective visual function tests were performed with multiple linear regression. RESULTS: VRQL was significantly correlated with age, WVA, WCS, and binocular VF areas (P < 0.001). Calculation of partial correlation coefficients showed age to be significantly correlated only with VF (V-4-e) area (P < 0.0001). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed age and WVA to be significantly associated with the NEI-VFQ-25 composite score (P < 0.02 and P = 0.001, respectively). WVA alone was the strongest predictor of self-reported experience of total visual function in BD patients (r 2= 0.69). CONCLUSIONS: A strong relationship between objective tests of visual function and patient perceived VRQL as assessed by a questionnaire was found. WVA was the strongest predictor and together with age explained almost 70% of the variability of the composite score of the questionnaire.

QSAR for anti-malarial activity of 2-aziridinyl and 2,3-bis(aziridinyl)-1,4-naphthoquinonyl sulfonate and acylate derivatives.

Quantitative structure-activity antimalarial relationships have been studied for 63 analogues of 2-aziridinyl and 2,3-bis(aziridinyl)-1,4-naphthoquinonyl sulfonate and acylate derivatives by means of multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural networks (ANN). The antimalarial activity [-log(IC50x10(6))] of the compounds studied were well correlated with descriptors encoding the chemical structure. Using the pertinent descriptors revealed by a stepwise procedure in the multiple linear regression technique, a correlation coefficient of 0.9394 (s=0.2121) for the training set was obtained for the ANN model in a [3-5-1] configuration. The results show that the antimalarial activity of 2-aziridinyl and 2,3-bis(aziridinyl)-1,4-naphthoquinonyl sulfonate and acylate derivatives is strongly dependent on hydrophobic character, hydrogen-bond acceptors and also steric factors of the substituents.

Dietary factors related to higher plasma fibrinogen levels of Japanese-americans in hawaii compared with Japanese in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether dietary factors explain higher plasma fibrinogen levels in Japanese emigrants living a Western lifestyle in Hawaii compared with Japanese in Japan. METHODS AND RESULTS: Plasma fibrinogen and nutrient intakes were examined by standardized methods in men and women 40 to 59 years of age from a Japanese-American sample in Hawaii (100 men and 106 women) and 4 population samples in Japan (569 men and 567 women). Multiple linear regression models were used to examine the relationship between dietary factors and the plasma fibrinogen difference between Hawaii and Japan. Average plasma fibrinogen was significantly higher in Hawaii compared with Japan (P<0.001 in both genders). In multiple linear regression analyses with each dietary variable considered separately, body mass index reduced the plasma fibrinogen difference between Hawaii and Japan by 20.4%; iron intake (mg/1000 kcal) and estimated total sugar intake (%kcal) reduced this difference by 30.0% and 14.4%, respectively. In a model that included body mass index, iron, estimated total sugars, and caffeine (also age and gender), this difference was reduced by 61.3% (from 42.2 to 16.3 mg/dL). CONCLUSIONS: Higher intake of iron, sugar, and caffeine, in addition to obesity, account largely for higher fibrinogen levels with Westernized lifestyle.

[Relationship between fetal lead exposure and birth weight--evaluation using deciduous incisor enamel].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between fetal lead exposure and birth weight, using deciduous incisor enamel as a biomarker and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) for analysis of lead. METHODS: We asked dental clinics (n=11) and kindergartens (n=11), mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Miyagi Prefecture, and parents to enroll donors of exfoliate deciduous incisors. Donors who consented to this study voluntarily sent deciduous incisors and questionnaires to the authors between March and October, 2003. The Pb/Ca ratios of inner enamel samples were determined by LA-ICP-MS. The relationship between the lead-to-calcium ratio in the enamel and the birth weight was evaluated by stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: One hundred forty-one subjects (male, 72; female, 69) were enrolled in this study. The mean Pb/Ca ratio in the enamel was as low as 0.24 mg-Pb/kg-Ca (SD=0.17). Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis extracted the following maternal variables with a positive coefficient with birth weight: gestational age (p < 0.01), weight gain during pregnancy (p < 0.01), prepregnancy BMI (body mass index, p < 0.01), and parity (p < 0.05). Lead concentration in the enamel was significantly negatively associated with birth weight (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicated that lead concentration in the enamel was inversely related to birth weight. This association was found in a population of which the mean blood lead level was estimated to be as low as about 1 microg/dl. We concluded that in utero low lead exposure decreased birth weight, within the normal range of birth weight.

Antenatal steroid treatment prevents severe hyperkalemia in very low-birthweight infants.

BACKGROUND: Hyperkalemia is seen quite often in very low-birthweight (VLBW) infants and concentrations sometimes become high enough to cause cardiac arrhythmia. The purpose of the present study was to identify factors that increase serum concentrations of potassium in VLBW infants. METHODS: Retrospective comparative analysis was performed on 140 VLBW infants who had been admitted to the Toho University Perinatal Center between January 1993 and December 1999 and needed mechanical ventilation for respiratory distress. Serum concentrations of potassium at 24 and 48 h of age were compared in two groups of infants, those whose mothers did and did not receive antenatal steroid treatment. Risk factors for severe hyperkalemia were analyzed by multiple linear regression models and Pearson's partial correlation analysis. RESULTS: Antenatal steroid treatment reduced serum potassium concentrations significantly at 24 and 48 h, as well as the incidence of cardiac arrhythmia and necessity for glucose insulin treatment for severe hyperkalemia. Multiple linear regression showed the serum potassium concentration at 24 h of age was associated with antenatal steroid hormone treatment, 24 h fluid intake volume, serum sodium concentrations at 24 h, gestational weeks and sampling site. Serum concentration of potassium at 48 h of age was associated with blood urea nitrogen, gestational week, serum sodium concentration at 48 h of age and fluid intake between 24 and 48 h of age. Urine output volume and serum creatinine concentrations were not correlated with potassium concentrations at either age. CONCLUSION: Antenatal steroid hormone treatment can reduce early hyperkalemia in VLBW infants and also the incidence of cardiac arrhythmia and the use of glucose insulin treatment.

Poor prediction of blood transfusion requirements in adult liver transplantations from preoperative variables.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of preoperative information to predict intraoperative blood transfusion requirements in adult orthotopic liver transplantation. DESIGN: Retrospective review. SETTING: Liver transplantation program in a referral center. PATIENTS: 583 sequential adult patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation. MEASUREMENTS: Preoperative variables with a previously demonstrated relationship to intraoperative transfusion were identified from the literature. These variables were then collected retrospectively from 583 consecutive liver transplantations. Relationships between these and intraoperative blood transfusion requirements were examined by both univariate analyses and multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Univariate analysis revealed significant associations between blood transfused and the following preoperative variables: age, gender, diagnosis, presence of grade 3 or 4 encephalopathy, pseudocholinesterase, creatinine, bilirubin, mean pulmonary artery pressure, activated partial thromboplastin time, and platelet count. Multiple linear regression analysis with correction for diagnosis identified age, creatinine, bilirubin, and pseudocholinesterase as independent predictors; for the final model r(2) = 0.22. CONCLUSION: Preoperative variables are poor predictors of intraoperative transfusion requirements even when significant associations exist, identifying a small proportion of the variability observed. A predictive approach based on this method would be too inaccurate to be of clinical use. The majority of the variability in transfusion requirements during liver transplantation most likely results from intraoperative and donor organ factors.

Influence of age on the steady state disposition of drugs commonly used for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.

BACKGROUND: The success of eradication therapy for Helicobacter pylori might be affected by the age of patients. AIM: To investigate whether disposition of drugs commonly used for H. pylori eradication is age-dependent. METHODS: Trough steady state serum levels of lansoprazole or ranitidine, amoxycillin, clarithromycin and metronidazole were monitored in 232 patients during the last dosing interval of a 5-day quadruple H. pylori eradication regimen. Detailed pharmacokinetic analysis was performed in 28 patients. RESULTS: Linear correlations between age and trough serum levels were observed with lansoprazole (r=0.25; P=0.002), ranitidine (r=0. 38; P=0.001) and clarithromycin (r=0.36; P < 0.0001). These associations were also inversely dependent of creatinine clearance for ranitidine (r=0.36; P=0.001) and clarithromycin (r=0.30; P < 0. 0001). Multiple linear regression revealed age as an important factor influencing trough serum levels of lansoprazole, clarithromycin and ranitidine. There were significant inverse relationships between creatinine clearance and area under curve of ranitidine (r=0.88; P < 0.0001) and amoxycillin (r=0.56; P=0.002). Multiple linear regression revealed serum creatinine as the most important factor influencing the area under curve of ranitidine, clarithromycin and amoxycillin. CONCLUSIONS: Age per se has little influence on pharmacokinetics of amoxycillin and ranitidine, which depend more on age-dependent decline in renal function. The influence of age, but not renal function was established for lansoprazole. Age and renal function have independent impacts on clarithromycin disposition.

QSPR modeling of pseudoternary microemulsions formulated employing lecithin surfactants: application of data mining, molecular and statistical modeling.

Data mining, computer aided molecular modeling, descriptor calculation, genetic algorithm and multiple linear regression analysis techniques were combined together to generate predictive quantitative structure property relationship (QSPR) models explaining the formation of lecithin-based W/O microemulsions. Ninety-four microemulsion phase diagrams were collected from five different references published over the past few years. Computer-based molecular modeling techniques were then applied on the components of the collected microemulsion systems to generate corresponding plausible three-dimensional (3D) structures. The resulting 3D models were utilized to calculate a group of molecular physicochemical descriptors. Thereafter, genetic algorithm and backward stepwise regression analysis were separately assessed as means for selecting optimal descriptor sets for statistical modeling. The selected descriptors were correlated with microemulsion existence areas employing multiple linear regression analysis. The resulting W/O models were statistically validated and found to be of significant predictive power. The models allowed better understanding of the process of microemulsion formation. Unfortunately, all QSPR modeling efforts directed towards O/W microemulsions failed completely.

Relation between respiratory symptoms, type of farming, and lung function disorders in farmers.

Respiratory symptoms and function were examined in a random sample of 181 farmers (124 pig farmers and 57 dairy farmers) with a mean age of 43 years. Wheezing and shortness of breath during work in the animal house were significantly associated with pig farming (odds ratio 11.4), current smoking (odds ratio 2.2), bronchial hyperreactivity (odds ratio 3.8), and low FEV1 (odds ratio 3.4). Pig farmers had a slightly lower FEV1 than dairy farmers (101% versus 104% predicted, NS). Symptomatic farmers had significantly lower FEV1 than symptomless farmers (93% versus 106% predicted). A multiple linear regression analysis of the cross sectional values of FEV1 showed that there was a decline in FEV1 associated with pig farming (-12 ml/year of pig farming) and smoking (-23 ml/pack year) in addition to the age related decline of 32 ml/year. A multiple linear regression analysis of PC20 histamine showed that bronchial reactivity increased with age, number of pack years, and number of years in pig farming. Work in closed pig rearing units is a pulmonary health hazard and causes decline in lung function.

Use of a neural network and a multiple regression model to predict histologic grade of astrocytoma from MRI appearances.

Several MRI features of supratentorial astrocytomas are associated with high histologic grade by statistically significant p values. We sought to apply this information prospectively to a group of astrocytomas in the prediction of tumor grade. We used 10 MRI features of fibrillary astrocytomas from 52 patient studies to develop neural network and multiple linear regression models for practical use in predicting tumor grade. The models were tested prospectively on MR images from 29 patients studies. The performance of the models was compared against that of a radiologist. Neural network accuracy was 61% in distinguishing between low and high grade tumors. Multiple linear regression achieved an accuracy of 59%. Assessment of the images by a radiologist yielded 57% accuracy. We conclude that while certain MRI parameters may be statistically related to astrocytoma histologic grade, neural network and linear regression models cannot reliably use them to predict tumor grade.

Decreased serum adiponectin in adolescents and young adults with familial primary hypercholesterolemia.

Decreased serum adiponectin is associated with dyslipidemia. However, serum adiponectin status has never before been studied in patients with familial-related severe primary hypercholesterolemia (FRSPH). The aim of this study is to measure serum adiponectin level in a group of young patients with FRSPH and determine its correlation with insulin-resistant status. Twenty-three patients with FRSPH [average LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) = 250.8 (190-610) mg/dL] without clinical manifestations of metabolic syndrome as well as 46 healthy (control) adolescents and young adults (<30 yr old) were included. The serum adiponectin, fasting sugar, insulin, lipids, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), and anthropometrical indices such as body mass index and waist circumference were obtained. The homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) was calculated to estimate the insulin resistant status. Compared with healthy controls, patients with FRSPH had a significantly lower mean serum adiponectin level (7.7+/-1.8 microg/mL vs. 10.1+/-4.3 microg/mL, P= 0.013). After adjustment for HOMA and associated covariates, multiple linear regression analysis showed that patients with FRSPH are significantly associated with hypoadiponectinemia. Compared with healthy controls, patients with FRSPH had a significantly lower mean serum adiponectin level (7.7 +/-1.8 microg/mL vs. 10.1+/-4.3 microg/mL, P = 0.013). After adjustment for HOMA and associated covariates, multiple linear regression analysis showed that patients with FRSPH are significantly associated with hypoadiponectinemia. The serum adiponectin levels are lower in young patients with FRSPH without clinical manifestations of metabolic syndrome. The mechanism of hypoadiponectinemia in patients with FRSPH is probably independent of insulin resistance.

QSAR analysis of SH2-binding phosphopeptides: using interaction energies and cross-correlation coefficients.

Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) analyses were carried out on the SH2-phosphopeptide complexes using multiple linear regressions. The residue-residue interaction energies and cross-correlation coefficients were used as descriptors. Since the number of descriptors was very large (602 for interaction energies and 951 for cross-correlation coefficients), the stepwise addition method was applied for the multiple linear regressions. The residue-residue interaction energies were good descriptors for structure-activity relationships. The high r(2) regression models were achieved by using interaction energy. In addition, the concerted atomic motions, which show the dynamic properties during the SH2-phosphopeptide interaction, were used as descriptors. They were identified by the cross-correlation coefficients for atomic displacement. The best regression model, derived by using four cross-correlation coefficients, gave a high r(2) value of 0.925. This suggests that the dynamic properties showing concerted atomic motions can be used as good descriptors in QSAR study.

Role of parathyroid hormone in the anemia of chronic terminal renal dysfunction in dogs.

Terminal renal dysfunction (TRD) was induced in 2 groups of dogs by partial surgical ablation of the kidney. Dogs of a control group and of 1 of the TRD groups were maintained on a diet containing normal phosphorus concentration, whereas dogs of the other TRD group were maintained on a low-phosphorus diet. Mild anemia developed in dogs of both TRD groups and could not be attributed to iron deficiency, increased erythrocyte concentration of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, or absolute deficiency of erythropoietin (EP). Subsequently, all dogs were acutely depleted of approximately 25% of their blood volume. Erythropoietin concentration in dogs of the TRD groups was lower than that of controls, however, erythroid regenerative capacity was comparable with that of control dogs when plasma parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentration was lowered by reduced dietary intake of phosphorus. The PCV in dogs of the chronic TRD groups had a slight positive correlation with serum EP concentration, and a significant (P less than 0.05) negative correlation with plasma PTH and serum phosphorus and creatinine concentrations, using a correlation matrix. There was no longer a significant correlation between plasma PTH concentration and PCV after controlling for serum creatinine concentration by use of a multiple linear regression analysis. A significant (P less than 0.05) negative correlation also was observed between plasma PTH and serum EP concentrations, but not between serum EP and phosphorus or creatinine concentrations. Significance of the EP and PTH association was reduced when analyzed, using a multiple linear regression analysis that included serum creatinine values.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Risk factors for corneal endothelial injury during phacoemulsification.

PURPOSE: To determine the principal risk factors for corneal endothelial injury during phacoemulsification. SETTING: Hayashi Eye Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan. METHODS: We prospectively investigated 859 consecutive eyes of 800 patients who had had phacoemulsification surgery. The percentage of corneal endothelial cell loss at 3 months after surgery was quantitated using specular microscopy. The firmness of the nucleus was graded by Emery's classification prior to surgery. We selected nine variables that could be associated with endothelial injury. The univariate associations between the endothelial cell loss and these variables were evaluated using simple correlation coefficients. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of endothelial cell loss. RESULTS: In the simple regression analysis, older age, small pupil diameter, high nucleus grade, large nucleus, greater infusion volume, type of IOL implanted, and a greater amount of total emitted ultrasound energy were univariately associated with endothelial cell loss. In the multiple linear regression analysis, the best final model (R2 = 0.42) identified high nucleus grade, greater infusion volume, type of IOL implanted, and large nucleus as independent predictors of endothelial cell loss. CONCLUSION: Both univariate and multivariate analyses identified the firmness of the nucleus as the most significant risk factor for endothelial cell loss. Therefore, mechanical contact with nuclear fragments is considered the principal cause of endothelial injury.

An assessment of critical anthropometric dimensions for predicting the fit of a half-mask respirator.

The purpose of this study was to determine if facial dimensions for a group of subjects were predictive of the fit factors measured while one brand of half-mask respirator was worn. Fit factors and 12 facial dimensions measured on 30 female and 38 male subjects were analyzed by correlation coefficients; weighted, multiple linear regression; and discriminant analysis. Data were analyzed for all subjects, gender subgroups, a race subgroup (whites only), and race/gender subgroups. Significant correlation coefficients with the log-transformed fit factors were found for four dimensions; four dimensions had significant coefficients in four or more multiple linear regression models. Only two dimensions had significant coefficients in four or more discriminant analysis models. Menton-subnasale (lower face) length was the only dimension included in all three of these groups. Gender-specific regression models had very high coefficient of determination values (R2 > 0.85). Discriminant analysis of the data for all subjects and race/gender subgroups found very good predictive scores for statistical software-generated models and menton-subnasale length alone; these scores were significantly better than those for the model with the respirator test panel dimensions (face length and lip width). These analyses found that facial dimensions were good predictors of respirator fit for those subjects wearing one brand of half-mask respirator. Lower face length was consistently indicated as being correlated or associated with fit. These results would indicate that dimensions other than those currently used may be more appropriate to define a half-mask respirator test panel.
