[Effect of nitrosoethylurea on sarcomagenesis induced by a foreign body].

Subcutaneous administration to rats of an intact cellophane plate gave rise to sarcomas in 60% of cases, the latent period being 16.5 month. Meanwhile administration of minced cellophane did not produce tumors. Combination of the plate subcutaneously and nitrosoethylurea (NEU) intraperitoneally increased the frequency of sarcomas to 73.3%, the latent period being 13.7 month. Sarcomas emerged in 33.3% of cases at the site of administering minced cellophane coupled with intraperitoneal injection of NEU, the latent period amounting to 13.2 month. The morphological appearance of sarcomas that occurred with the use of NEU differed from tht resultant from administering the cellophane plate alone. Adsorption of NEU on the cellophane is suggested.

Characteristics of non-aqueous electrolytes for transcutaneous oxygen electrodes.

We investigated the characteristics of non-aqueous solvents for tcPO2 electrolytes, using a tcPO2 electrode with three 15 micrometer platinum cathodes set in a polished glass surface, a 17.8 mm2 silver anode covered with a 25 micrometer Telfon membrane, with and without a 12 micrometer cellophane spacer, and polarized at--0.8v. We examined the effect of ethylene glycol (EG) concentration, in water, on O2 sensitivity, stirring effect, in vitro drift, in vitro response time, behaviour on the skin of newborn infants and in vivo response time. We found the following: (1) O2 sensitivity was reduced by increasing EG concentration. (2) phi, the stirring effect (gas/50% glycerine) was 1.01 at 90% EG with cellophane, but higher without cellophane. (3) In vitro drift at 44 degree C electrode temperature, in 43 degree C water (simulating skin), was reduced with 90% EG, 25 micrometer Telfon and no spacer, but increased with a spacer. (4) In vitro response time was increased with EG. (5) Correlations with arterial PO2 in a group of newborns was as excellent with an electrode made with 90% EG and 25 micrometer Telfon, without spacer, as it was with our previous study using aqueous electrolyte and 12 micrometer Telfon wint 12 micrometer cellophane: (tcPO2 = 1.32 + 0.988 PaO2 r = 0.987). In vivo response time was not prolonged. Using EG, the tc PO2 electrode membrane required changing only after 7--9 days, compared with 1--2 days when using aqueous electrolytes. No advantage of using cellophane spacers was identified in these in vivo studies.

Induction of endocrine cell differentiation: a new approach to management of diabetes.

Cellophane wrapping of the hamster pancreas induces a trophic stimulus that leads to ductular proliferation in association with nesidioblastosis. Our previous studies have demonstrated that cellophane wrapping of the pancreas leads to the development of a new population of beta-cells that is capable of reversing streptozocin-induced diabetes. The predominant type of islet regenerated is initially small but progressively enlarges to the size of control islets. Electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry revealed areas of nesidioblastosis that contained a predominance of beta-cells, but also alpha- and delta-cells. Metabolic studies were conducted to define the functional aspects of this model. After cellophane wrapping of the normal hamster pancreas, normal serum levels of glucose and insulin were maintained despite a 2.5-fold increase in the number of pancreatic islets per square millimeter compared with a control group that underwent a sham operation and was not wrapped. Islets were harvested from control and cellophane-wrapped pancreata and demonstrated a similar biphasic insulin response to high-dose glucose perfusion in vitro. Insulin secretion ceased with low-dose glucose perfusion. Insulin derived from unwrapped pancreata was found to comprise two peaks on high-pressure liquid chromatography and that from wrapped pancreata a single peak. The biologically active insulin corresponded on high-pressure liquid chromatography with the standard insulin preparation. Thus, the experimental induction of nesidioblastosis is associated with development of normal beta-cell sensitivity to glucose and release of a single form of a biologically active insulin. It thus represents a possible therapeutic approach to diabetes.

Milk-clotting Enzyme from Microorganisms: V. Purification and Crystallization of Mucor Rennin from Mucor pusillus var. Lindt.

A rennin crystal was obtained from the crude milk-clotting enzyme of Mucor pusillus var. Lindt. The crude enzyme was purified by using columns of Amberlite CG-50, diethylaminoethyl Sephadex A-50, and Sephadex G-100. This purified enzyme was dissolved in 0.1 M sodium acetate (pH 5.0) buffer to a final concentration of 2 to 3%; ammonium sulfate (to 40% saturation) was added, and the resulting solution was placed in cellophane tubes. The enzyme solution was dialyzed against 0.1 M sodium acetate buffer (pH 5) containing ammonium sulfate was added dropwise to the outside solution of the cellophane tube, and the concentration of ammonium sulfate in the cellophane tube increased gradually. The crystals of enzyme were formed in the cellophane tube when the concentration reached approximately 50% saturation. After the enzyme solution was concentrated in the freezer, the crystals were obtained. The activity of the crystalline enzyme was inhibited by Hg, Ag, Zn, and KMnO(4).

Cellulosic ion-exchange membranes for hemodialysis.

The application of cellulosic ion-exchange membranes to hemodialysis was studied in vitro. The membranes were prepared by radiation-grafting methacrylic acid and vinylpyridine to films of DuPont cellophane PD-215 to produce cation-exchange and anion-exchange membranes, respectively. Solutions of urea, creatinine, glucose, and uric acid were studied for their interactions with and diffusion through the membranes. Ultrafiltration rates were also determined. Cuprophane and PD-215 cellophane were studied as controls. Dialysis plots for the membranes revealed a mechanism of "assisted transport." Initially, the solutes were removed from solution by a sorption/adsorption mechanism followed by a steady-state diffusion process. The calculated diffusivities for these later steady-state regions increased linearly with capacity for urea, creatinine, and uric acid, while for glucose the reverse was true. The combined processes involved provided considerably greater mass transport per unit thickness than either DuPont PD-215 cellophane or Cupropane.

Induction of cell proliferation and differentiation in the pancreas of the adult Vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops): preliminary results.

Cellophane wrapping of the adult Syrian golden hamster pancreas has been found to result in ductular cell proliferation leading to islet regeneration. Injection of cytosol from a cellophane-wrapped pancreas into normal or diabetic hamsters evoked a similar response. In view of the therapeutic potential of the active substance in this cytosol, it was decided to investigate whether a similar response could be achieved in a primate. In normal adult Vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) pancreas, proliferation is seen only rarely in islet cells and occasionally in duct and acinar cells. Immunohistochemical investigation of normal Vervet monkey pancreas (n = 4) and 14 days (n = 2) and 56 days (n = 1) after cellophane wrapping of the Vervet monkey pancreas revealed a slight increase in proliferation of islet and acinar cells and a larger increase in proliferation of duct cells and in total endocrine cell volume. The results suggest that there is a latent developmental capability in the adult primate pancreas.

Enzyme diffusion from Trichoderma atroviride (= T. harzianum P1) to Rhizoctonia solani is a prerequisite for triggering of Trichoderma ech42 gene expression before mycoparasitic contact.

A plate confrontation experiment is commonly used to study the mechanism by which Trichoderma spp. antagonize and parasitize other fungi. Previous work with chitinase gene expression (ech42) during the precontact period of this process in which cellophane and dialysis membranes separated Trichoderma harzianum and its host Rhizoctonia solani resulted in essentially opposite results. Here, we show that cellophane membranes are permeable to proteins up to at least 90 kDa in size but that dialysis membranes are not. ech42 was expressed during the precontact stage of the confrontation between Trichoderma atroviride and its host only if the cellophane was placed between the two fungi. These results are consistent with enzyme diffusion from T. atroviride to R. solani generating the trigger of ech42 gene expression.

Interaction between human neutrophils and corneocytes: corneocyte-induced respiratory burst of neutrophils assessed by chemiluminescence.

In an in vitro study to examine whether corneocytes stimulate neutrophils to cause a respiratory burst, we found that stratum corneum (SC) homogenates obtained from the sole of healthy individuals induced a substantial respiratory burst in human neutrophils when assessed by lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence (CL) in the presence of the fresh human serum. Electron microscopically, the interaction between corneocytes and neutrophils was shown as distinctive deformation of the neutrophils adhering to the surface of the corneocytes that suggested a specific binding between SC and neutrophils. In contrast, in the heat-inactivated serum-supplemented system, the peak intensity of SC-induced CL was significantly decreased, being only slightly higher than that noted in the SC-free background. To circumvent the time-consuming preparation of the SC homogenates, we measured CL with a sheet of SC obtained by stripping with adhesive cellophane tape. In this case we used plasma because the complement was easily activated by cellophane tape itself when serum was used. To evaluate the influence of the location of horny tissue in the SC on CL in neutrophils, we used SC sheets stripped with cellophane tape from various levels of the SC. However, there was no significant difference in CL responses between SC sheets obtained by 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, or 15 strippings. Our findings suggest that when SC comes in contact with serum, it is opsonized by C3b, and such SC causes a respiratory burst of neutrophils following their specific binding on the surface of corneocytes.

Cyclic AMP induces the synthesis of developmentally regulated plasma membrane proteins in Dictyostelium.

Dictyostelium discoideum slugs (pseudoplasmodia) were disaggregated and the resynthesis of developmentally regulated plasma membrane proteins examined. The synthesis of the majority of these proteins was inhibited when cells were overlaid with Cellophane and maintained as a monolayer. However, cell contact and movement did occur under the Cellophane. The inhibition of differentiation may result from the inability of the cells to organize specifically into multicellular aggregates. The addition of cyclic AMP (1--5 mM) induced the synthesis of certain developmentally regulated plasma membrane proteins in cells overlaid with Cellophane. Hence, this confirms other work showing that cyclic AMP is required for at least some post-aggregative gene expression. Specific cell organisation and interactions are apparently required for an increase in or maintenance of intracellular cyclic AMP levels.

Ketoconazole 2% shampoo in the treatment of tinea versicolor: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Tinea versicolor is a common superficial fungal infection caused by a lipophilic yeast. This chronically recurring opportunistic infection is especially prevalent in tropical and semitropical regions. The topical short-term application of ketoconazole 2% shampoo may provide effective and safe therapy for tinea versicolor. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a single application (1 day) versus three daily applications (3 days) of ketoconazole 2% shampoo versus placebo shampoo in the treatment of mycologically confirmed tinea versicolor. METHODS: Three hundred twelve patients were included in the primary analyses for this 31-day study. Global evaluation scores were measured on days 10 and 31 with a 5-point scale (1 = healed to 5 = worsening), and a cellophane tape test was done at baseline and days 3, 10, and 31. Efficacy was assessed by clinical response, defined as both a global evaluation score of 1 (healed) and a negative cellophane tape test on day 31. Signs and symptoms of tinea versicolor (scaling, itching, erythema, hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation) also were evaluated at baseline, day 10, and day 31 with a 4-point scale (0 = absent to 3 = severe). RESULTS: Both regimens of ketoconazole shampoo were significantly (P < .001) more effective than placebo for rate of clinical response, global evaluation scores, and mycologic outcomes (cellophane tape test). The clinical response rates at day 31 were 73%, 69%, and 5% for the 3-day ketoconazole, 1-day ketoconazole, and placebo groups, respectively. The difference in the efficacy of the two ketoconazole treatment regimens was not statistically significant. There were no significant differences between any of the treatment groups in the number of patients who experienced adverse events. No serious adverse events occurred and no patient withdrew from the trial prematurely because of an adverse event. CONCLUSION: Ketoconazole 2% shampoo, used as a single application or daily for 3 days, is safe and highly effective in the treatment of tinea versicolor.

The circumfusion system for multipurpose culture chambers. I. Introduction to the mechanics, techniques, and basic results of a 12-chamber (in vitro) closed circulatory system.

A self-contained mechanical system for circulating nutrient fluid through 12 tissue culture chambers is described in detail. This system utilizes nonperforated cellophane membranes in the chambers which separate the circulating nutrient from the tissue culture environments. The nutrient, therefore, is dialyzed through the cellophane of each chamber; some cell products are retained in the microenvironment between the closely apposed cellophane and cover slip, whereas the other cell products move from chamber to chamber in the circulating nutrient. The resultant environmental conditions directed by the circumfusion systems are highly favorable for maintaining the differentiation of chick embryo tissues over protracted periods; a number of micrographs are shown.

Recurrent herpes simplex in the mouse: inflammation in the skin and activation of virus in the ganglia following peripheral stimulation.

The originally infected ear of mice latently infected in the cervical ganglia with herpes simplex virus (HSV) was treated with one of five stimuli: stripping with cellophane tape, irradiation with u.v. light, or the application of xylene, dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) or retinoic acid. Each of these stimuli induced the appearance of infectious virus in the ganglia 1 to 5 days later, most frequently after 1 to 3 days. Virus was also isolated from the treated ears, most frequently 3 to 5 days after stimulation. In a proportion of mice treated with cellophane tape stripping, xylene, retinoic acid or DMSO, clinical recurrent disease was observed, although in the case of DMSO this proportion was low. Some of the physiological changes induced in the skin by the five stimuli were studied. Treatment with DMSO, cellophane tape stripping or xylene induced almost immediate inflammation in the skin as judged by extravasation of Evans blue dye. Studies with inhibitors suggested that this was mediated by a neurogenic factor together with histamine or 5-hydroxytryptamine, or both of these. In addition, with the exception of mice treated with DMSO, the levels of prostaglandins of the E and F classes in the skin of the ear were elevated 1 to 3 days after treatment. These results are discussed with reference to the mechanisms by which recurrent herpetic disease develops.

Renal venous wedge pressure in renal wrap hypertension in rabbits.

1. Renal cellophane wrapping to produce hypertension causes thickening of the capsule of the kidney. To determine whether this compresses the kidney, deep renal vein wedge pressure was measured as an estimate of tissue pressure in anaesthetized rabbits 1 month after cellophane wrapping (n = 5) or a sham operation (n = 3). 2. Renal vein wedge pressure was 18.3 +/- 2.0 mmHg in hypertensive rabbits and 8.4 +/- 1.1 mmHg in the sham-operated rabbits. 3. Arterial pressure was raised or lowered with angiotensin II or glyceryl trinitrate, respectively. Arterial and wedge pressures were approximately linearly related and, at any given arterial pressure, wedge pressure was approximately 8 mmHg higher in the cellophane-wrapped kidney than in the kidney of the sham-operated group. 4. These results, showing that renal wedge pressure is elevated in renal wrap rabbits, indicate that the kidneys are compressed, probably by the thickened renal capsule. This may explain the increased renal vascular resistance seen in this form of hypertension.

Congenital portosystemic shunts in toy and miniature poodles.

Three male Poodles (two Toy, one Miniature) were presented to their veterinarians for evaluation of urolithiasis and varying degrees of hepatic encephalopathy. All three dogs were diagnosed as having intrahepatic shunts and referred for surgical correction. In each case, shunts arose from the right branch of the portal vein and were amenable to perivascular dissection caudal to where the vessel entered the hepatic parenchyma and to placement of perivascular cellophane bands to achieve shunt attenuation. During the same period, a female Miniature Poodle also presented for treatment of a congenital portosystemic shunt discovered during evaluation for generalised motor seizures. This animal had an extrahepatic portoazygous shunt that was completely ligated. Congenital portosystemic shunts have not previously been identified in Toy and Miniature Poodles at the University Veterinary Centre, Sydney and the anatomical types of shunt seen in this breed have not previously been reported in a consecutive series of cases. The three male dogs are noteworthy for a number of reasons: all had intrahepatic shunts, despite being small breed dogs; all three presented in a similar fashion, and all had shunts of an anatomical type amenable to placement of cellophane bands. One male dog died within 12 hours of surgery, the remaining three dogs survived and their liver function was normal at follow-up between 2 and 3 months after surgery. Use of cellophane bands for successful attenuation of intrahepatic shunts has not been previously reported.

The CBEL glycoprotein of Phytophthora parasitica var-nicotianae is involved in cell wall deposition and adhesion to cellulosic substrates.

The cell wall of the oomycete plant pathogen Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae contains a protein called CBEL that shows cellulose-binding (CB), elicitor (E) of defense in plants and lectin-like (L) activities. The biological role of this molecule in Phytophthora was investigated by generating transgenic strains suppressed in CBEL expression. Phenotypic characterization of these strains showed that they were severely impaired in adhesion to a cellophane membrane, differentiation of lobed structures in contact with cellophane, and formation of branched aggregating hyphae on cellophane and on flax cellulose fibres. Infection assays revealed that the strains suppressed in CBEL expression were not greatly affected in pathogenicity and formed branched aggregating hyphae in contact with the roots of the host plant, thereby indicating that CBEL is involved in the perception of cellulose rather than in the morphogenesis of hyphal aggregates. Interestingly, the absence of CBEL was correlated with abnormal formation of papillae-like cell wall thickenings in vitro, suggesting that CBEL is involved in cell wall deposition in Phytophthora. Reverse genetics in oomycetes has long been hampered by their diploid nature and difficulties in transformation and regeneration. The gene inactivation approach reported in this work provides the first direct evidence for intrinsic functions of an elicitor and cell wall protein in oomycetes.

A technique for mycelial development of ectomycorrhizal fungi on agar media.

A technique was established to study ectomycorrhizal fungi on agar media. Petri dishes, 60 mm in diameter, containing 10 mL of culture medium covered with a cellophane disk were used for easy collection of the mycelium after growth. For analysis of fungal biomass production, a sterilized cellophane sheet was placed on the medium's surface. Inoculation was achieved by placing a mycelial block onto the center of the cellophane sheet and then incubating at 25 degrees C in the dark. Colony radial growth was measured and biomass dry wt was determined. Fresh mycelia were homogenized with 10 mL of acetate buffer (pH 5.5) for enzyme analysis. A crude extract was obtained by adding all culture medium to 90 mL of distilled water and homogenizing in a Potter. Reducing sugars, enzyme concentration, and pH were determined. Three fungal strains, Suillus collinitus, Pisosithus arrhizus, and Hebeloma cylindrosporum, were grown in different culture media (potato dextrose agar or Pintro's medium). Parameters measured over time included glucose concentration, phosphatase activity, biomass, and pH.

[Study On The Status Of Helminthic Infections In Koreans]

This study was undertaken to evaluate the present status of intestinal helminthic infections in Koreans, from April 1967 through May 1969. The nationwidely collected stool specimens and scotch-tape anal swabs from primary schoolchildren, middle school students, draftees to army recruitment camp, soldiers and inhabitants of various parts of Korea were examined. The methods employed were Kato's cellophane thick smear technique and formalin-ether sedimentation technique in 40,581 for the prevalence rate of various intestinal helminths, scotch-tape anal swab technique in 8,585 for the prevalence rate of Enterobius vermicularis and by Stoll's dilution egg counting technique in 1,174 for the evaluation of the worm burden of some helminths. The results are as follows. I. Result of stool examination: 1. The positive rate of intesinal helminthes of any kind was 90.5% among 40,581. In rural people, it was 92.3% in average in contrast to 85.0% in Seoul inhabitants. 2. The infection rate of A. lumbricoides in 40,581 was 58.2%. It was higher in rural people 62.9% than in Seoul inhabitants and highest in 5-9 year-old group by age. 3. The infection of Trichocephalus trichiurus showed the highest prevalence rate in Koreans and it was 74.5%. No remarkable difference was observed between Seoul inhabitants(72.2%) and rural people(75.2%). The tendency of higher prevalence rate with the older age group was observed. 4. The infection rates of hookworm and Trichostrongylus orientalis in 40,581 examinations by cellophane thick smear were 5.1% and 5.8% respectively. But in 4,949 examinations for which refined cellophane thick smear technique and formalin-ether sedimentation technique were employed, the infection rates were turned out 17.6% in hookworm and 15.9% in T. orientalis. Although rural people showed higher infection rate of hookworm(18.8%) than Seoul inhabitants(13.8%), the reverse was true in T. orientalis infection rate(14.5% : 20.3%). Both kinds of infections were tend to be higher with the increase of age. 5. The infection rates of Clonorchis sinensis and Metagonimus yokogawai were 4.7% and 0.4% respectively. In both kinds of infections male showed higher infection rates than female and the tendencies of higher infection rate in the older age group were observed. The provinces which showed the higher infection rate of C. sinensis were South and North Kyongsang Do and North Cholla Do, all of which are provinces of southern part of Korea. Some endemic foci of M. yokogawai were noticed in South Kyongsang Do and South Cholla Do. 6. The infection rate of Taenia spp. by applying only the stool examination was 0.7% throughout the survey. No sex difference in infection rate of Taenia spp. was noticed, but in older age group it was increased. Cheju Do, the island of extreme southern part of Korea seemed the most endemic area and South and North Cholla Do were next in ranking of Taenia infection rate. The ova of Hymenolepis nana were observed in 0.2% and all of them were under the age of 20 except only one caes. The infection rate seemed higher in female (0.3%: 0.1%). No geographical difference was noticed except 1.1% of schoolchilderen and students of Cheju Do. II. Result of Scotch-tape anal swab technique for E. vermicularis infection. The infection rate of E. vermicularis in 8,585 urban and rural schoolchildren and rural inhabitants was 46.6%. Female (57.9%) had definitely higher infection rate than male (41.4%). The infection rate was significantly higher in rural people than Seoul schoolchildren. The exteme example was 79.7% in schoolchildren of South Cholla Do. III. Result of worm burden examination by Stoll's dilution egg-counting technique: 1. Among 1,174 examinations, countable(E.P.G.> 100) cases of A. lumbricoides were 745(63.5%) and the mean E.P.G. was 9,723. The mean E.P.G. in Seoul inhabitants was 5,835 in contrast to 10,820 in rural people. The age group of 5-9 showed the heaviest mean E.P.G., 11,337. 70.6% of 745 cases were less than 10,000 in E.P.G. which means light infection. 2. Countable cases by Stoll's technique for T. tr trichiurus ova were 63.5% and mean E.P.G. was 649. No difference between Seoul and rural inhabitants was observed. Grade I and II in which E.P.G. is less than 5,000 involve 99.3% of positive cases. 3. 91 cases (7.9%) in 1,174 were positive for hookworm ova by Stoll's technique and mean E.P.G. was 501. All cases were in Grade I and II which were less than 5,000 in E.P.G. Trichostrongylus orientalis was positive only in 25 cases (2.1%) by Stoll's technique and mean E.P.G. was 340. No cases were found to have more than 5,000 in T. orientalis E.P.G. 4. The mean E.P.G. of Clonorchis sinensis among the referred cases of clonorchiasis to Department of Parasitology, Seoul National University, was 9,416. On the other hand mean E.P.G. of C. sinensis was 21,376 among cases in the hyperendemic area of Kimhae, South Kyongsang Do, and 3,073 in cases from other various localities. Among referred clonorchiasis cases to our Department, 21.6% were turned out to have the E.P.G. more than 10,000. The cases who have the E.P.G. more than 10,000 in hyperendemic area, Kimhae were 40.7% and in other various localities were 9.1%

A clinical trial of oxantel and pyrantel against intestinal nematodes infections.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of oxantel/pyrantel tablets, oxantel suspension, pyrantel dry syrup and pyrantel tablets against T. trichiurus and A. lumbricoides infections. Twenty-four cases of mixed infections of T. trichiurus and A. lumbricoides were treated with oxantel/pyrantel tablets at a single dose of 20 mg/kg of body weight, and 49 cases of single infection of T. trichiurus were administered oxantel suspension at a single dose of 15 mg/kg of body weight. On the other hand, single infection of A. lumbricoides in 18 cases was administered pyrantel dry syrup at a single dose of 5 mg/kg of body weight. In the above 91 cases, the negative conversion rate and the egg reduction rate of egg out-put before and after the drug administration were examined by the cellophane thick smear method and Stoll's egg counting technique. A follow-up examination was carried out 3-4 weeks after the drug administration. Other 59 cases of single and mixed infection of T. trichiurus and A. lumbricoides were examined by the cellophane thick smear method only and administered pyrantel tablets at a single dose of 2.5 mg/kg of body weight. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The prevalence rates of T. trichiurus and A. lumbricoides infection in this study were 42.8% and 27.2% respectively by the cellophane thick smear method among 1,066 stool specimens. 2. The egg negative conversion rate and the egg reduction rate in the administration of oxantel/pyrantel tablets at a single dose of 20 mg/kg body weight were 75.0% and 97.8% respectively in T. trichiurus infection and 100% each in A. lumbricoides. 3. The egg negative conversion rate and the egg reduction rate in the administration of oxantel suspension at a single dose of 15 mg/kg body weight were 85.7% and 93.0% respectively in sinlge infection of T. trichiurus. 4. The egg negative conversion rate and the egg reduction rate in the administration of pyrantel dry syrup at a single dose of 5 mg/kg body weight were 100% each in single infection of A. lumbricoides. 5. The qualitative evaluation in cases of single and mixed infection of T. trichiurus and A. lumbricoides were by means of pyrantel tablets at a single dose of 2.5 mg/kg body weight, the cure being 100% against A. lumbricoides but 17.0% against T. trichiurus. 6. There were no undesirable side effects in this study and oxantel suspension and pyrantel dry syrup were well accepted and tolerated.
