NYU College of Dentistry at 125: focus on the future.

I am happy to share with my friends and colleagues a report on the directions that dental education at the New York University College of Dentistry will be taking in the years ahead. Indeed, as the college continues a year-long celebration commemorating the 125th anniversary of its founding, in 1865, it is fitting that our retrospective of the past helps us to discern and capsulize the future.

Twenty-one years of child advocacy: an editorial retrospective of the Teuscher years.

On the eleventh anniversary of his Editorship of JDC, Dr. George Teuscher took stock of the state of the Journal, noting progress made and challenges ahead, writing that, "A good journal cannot ride on its reputation... Constant effort to improve, resourcefulness, and prolific reading and study are required of the editor of a prestigious journal." He has written extensively on the importance of writing and effective communication in the face of an information explosion, stating that, "The journal is still the best means of presenting new information to the professions." Writing a note of encouragement to the editor of a new dental journal, he observed, "Of course the dental and medical literature can boast of some great editors, who earned their reputations because they were able to apply intelligence, writing ability, knowledge of the scientific method, and imagination to a new undertaking." After twenty-one years, it is safe to say that Dr. Teuscher is such an Editor; he has filled our minds with knowledge and our hearts with wisdom; he has reminded us of the best that is in us; he has helped us to feel the anguish of the afflicted and oppressed; he has brought knowledge and skill to help the infirm: and he has taught us to stand in awe before the mystery of being.

The quality of life of the dentist as perceived by society.

Research dealing with the public's perception of the quality of life of the dentist is not well developed. Generally, the approach of researchers to this topic has been to examine the public's image of the dental profession. Specifically, the degree of prestige attributed to the dental profession by the public has attracted major attention. A review of studies reveals that while the profession enjoys relatively high prestige, it is extrinsic factors rather than the intrinsic value of the service that determine the public's image. The dental health care system and dental education as presently structured do not appear to be serving the bast interest of the public. The paper concludes with a discussion of what are considered to be major issues that the dental profession both in Canada and elsewhere will have to deal with in the coming years, in order to bring about change both in its image and the generally low utilization of the services it provides.
