[Palpebral capillary hemangioma and amblyopia. Apropos of 2 cases].

Periorbital capillary hemangiomas of childhood can produce visual axis occlusion and anisometropia, resulting in amblyopia. We report our experience performing surgical resection of periorbital capillary hemangiomas. Partial resection of hemangiomas was performed in two infants under five months of age, and permitted clearing of the visual axis. This immediate effect is necessary to prevent amblyopia. Surgical resection should be considered a treatment option for managing periorbital capillary hemangiomas which threaten vision.

Giant hairy nevus: preventable cause of amblyopia.

An infant with a congenital giant hairy nevus causing occlusion of the visual axis of the right eye is presented. The nevus was removed at the early age of three weeks because of concern that the child would develop deprivation amblyopia. Since such nevi can undergo malignant changes, early removal may be justified for that reason alone.

[Treatment of tumors of some structures of the splanchocranium].

The results of long experience with many methods of reconstructive surgery following destruction of various splanchnocranial structures are presented. Emphasis is placed on the usefulness of cooperation between the oncological and plastic surgeon. Fifteen cases are illustrated. In many of these, endoarterial infusion of chemical antiblastics was first employed. Since tumours may vary considerably in site and histological type, as well in the biotype, age and sex of the patient, and since a variety of radical and reconstructive techniques exist for individual or associated use, therapeutical programmes cannot be put forward with any degree of confidence, but must obviously be determined by the surgeon's personal experience.

Malignant schwannoma of the trigeminal nerve.

SUMMARY: We present the MR imaging, CT, and clinical findings of a patient with malignant schwannoma of the trigeminal nerve. Local tumor recurrence is frequent and may be mistaken for lymphatic spread. In this report, we emphasize the natural history of this rare tumor and discuss the importance of imaging in diagnosis and surveillance.

P-glycoprotein expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral and maxillofacial region.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of drug resistance in oral and maxillofacial carcinoma to chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty cases of squamous carcinoma in the oral and maxillofacial region were examined for the multidrug resistance gene product P-glycoprotein using a monoclonal antibody, MRK16. RESULT: P-glycoprotein was detected in 62.5% of all samples. P-glycoprotein expression was related to the chemotherapy and the differentiation of carcinoma. P-glycoprotein expression was higher in the post-chemotherapy group than in the non-chemotherapy group (P < 0.05). Well-differentiated tumors expressed P-glycoprotein more frequently (P < 0.05). P-glycoprotein expression was compared with clinical response to chemotherapy. The accuracy rate of prediction was 75%. CONCLUSION: P-glycoprotein plays an important role in mechanism of drug resistance of squamous cell carcinoma in the oral and maxillofacial region.

[Relation between the expression of P-gp and GST-pi in oral and maxillofacial squamous carcinoma and chemoresistance].

OBJECTIVE: To investigating the relation between the expression of P-glycoprotein and Glutathione transferase-pi and the chemoresistance. METHODS: The expressions of these two proteins in patients with oral and maxillofacial squamous carcinoma and normal oral tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The positive expression rate of P-gp and GST-pi in oral and maxillofacial malignant tumor was 57.1% and 53.6% respectively, and no expression in normal oral tissues; the expression of GST-pi was relevant to the resistance to cisplatin, while the expression of P-gp was relevant to the resistance to chemotherapeutic drug in general. CONCLUSIONS: The method of immunohistochemistry combining MTT assay in vitro may become an efficient way to predict the sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drug.

[Flowcytometry DNA analysis of oral and maxillofacial non-Hodgkin's lymphoma].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the results of flowcytometry analyses of different clinical stage, location, pathologic grade and cell origin of oral and maxillofacial non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), and the diagnostic value of flowcytometry analysis in lymphoma. METHOD: This study analyzed 50 oral and maxillofacial NHL cases and 10 reactive lymph nodes (formalin fixed and paraffin embedded) by flowcytometry (FCM). RESULTS: Reactive lymph nodes were all diploid. The diploid rate of NHL was 54%, and aneuploidy rate was 46%. There was statistically significant difference between reactive lymph nodes and NHL in the DNA ploidy status and cell cycle data (SPF, CV, S + G2/M, DI). The S phase fraction (SPF) and S + G2/M had close relationship with the grade of NHL. SPF value and DNA ploidy status had no obvious relationship with the prognosis. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that the FCM had diagnostic value in NHL, especially when the morphological diagnosis was difficult. Although the cell cycle data had no prognostic value, SPF and SPF + G2/M can show the proliferative status of NHL, which can help clinical doctor select therapeutic method.
