The rate of spontaneous abortion from embryo-fetal infection is believed to range from 10 to 15%. This figure, however, is likely to be underestimated because of subclinical abortions occurring at the earliest stages of gestation that go undiagnosed. The actual frequency of infections resulting in 1st trimester spontaneous abortion is therefore unknown, whereas the impact of infectious agents in the TORCH group on the pathogenesis of such event is well known, although the pathogenetic mechanisms are not well understood. A wide range of microorganisms have been isolated by several investigators from the lower genital tract of women with 1st trimester spontaneous abortion. No causative relationship of HIV-1 infection to spontaneous abortion has been established yet. The diagnosis of abortion from infection can only be made retrospectively based on histologic examination of fetal and placental tissue and isolation on culture of the infectious agent assumed to have caused infection.
The synthesis of infectious virus is reduced by 99% in adenovirus type 2-infected KB cells maintained at 42 C in suspension. Studies to delineate the steps in virus biosynthesis blocked at 42 C revealed the following. (i) The inhibition of ribosomal ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis and the block in the conversion of ribosomal RNA precursors to ribosomal RNA which normally occur in infected cells at 37 C was accentuated at 42 C. (ii) The same species of early and late viral messenger RNA were synthesized at 37 and 42 C. (iii) The shift from host cell deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis to viral DNA replication occurred earlier at 42 C than at 37 C. These findings indicate that the thermosensitive block(s) in virion formation does not occur at the level of viral DNA replication or transcription of viral mRNA but probably involves the synthesis of late viral proteins or the maturation of the virion.

The HeLa subline K11A-HG-1 (line of HeLa cells persistently infected with Edomonston measles virus but containing little or no transmissible infectious virus) was co-cultivated with Vero cells. Focal syncytia were formed containing measles antigen and accumulations of nucleocapsid-like structures with no detectable production of transmissible infectious virus or positive hemadsorption. The infection aborted between 2 and 3 weeks after preparation of co-cultures. Upon subculture of co-cultures, occasionally complete infections (progressive syncytial degeneration, hemadsorption, and production of transmissible infectious virus) appeared. A linear dose response curve for nontransmissible infection was obtained along with evidence that measles antigen had to be present on the surface of K11A-HG-1 cells for their infectivity for Vero cells. The basis for initiation of Vero cell infection by living K11A-HG-1 cells, but not by nonviable intact K11A-HG-1 cells killed by a virus-preserving technique, nor by disrupted K11A-HG-1 cells, is, at present, a matter of speculation. However, several lines of evidence were obtained which suggested that subsequent development of delayed variable transmissible Vero cell infection occurred because of a type of viral interference, including the presence of an inhibitor in K11A-HG-1 cultures, the bulk of which was cell-associated.
BACKGROUND: Laminaria tents used to facilitate surgical abortion are rarely associated with significant infectious morbidity. CASE: A parous woman in midpregnancy had laminaria placed in her cervix followed by a second set after 24 hours. Eight hours later, she presented with dyspnea, hives, fever, tachycardia, and hypotension. Antibiotic treatment was initiated and a dilation and evacuation procedure was performed. Amniotic membrane cultures showed a heavy growth of Staphylococcus aureus with staphylococcal enterotoxin C expression, compatible with toxic shock syndrome. CONCLUSION: Laminaria cervical dilation might be associated with toxic shock syndrome.

Bovine Herpesvirus Type 1 (BHV1) is the aetiological agent of a number of diseases and not only of IBR, namely infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV), infectious balanoposthitis (IBP), conjunctivitis, encephalomyelitis, mastitis, abortion, enteritis, and lesions in the interdigital space. The serological identical strains differ, however, in some aspects. Typical genital strains usually cause a mild illness, sometimes not even detected clinically, but serologically. They hamper eradication programmes and do not cause IBR when inoculated intranasally. The other--modern--strains are, however, always able to induce a severe disease in the genital tracts. But infection of field or vaccine virus leads to the development of humoral and cell-mediated immunity. The latter is, however, not transmitted to neonates via colostrum. BHV1 antibodies can be found in bovines in all continents, and in many wild species. Prevalences vary greatly depending on herd size and management. Because seronegative cattle play a role in international trade a number of European countries have eradicated BHV1, with very high costs involved. Marker and conventional vaccines can prevent disease but not infection followed by the state of latency. The genomes of several strains, including the marker strains can remain latent in the same animal and be reactivated after stress or injection of corticosteroids. For the detection of humoral antibodies the ELISA is widely used. It is useful for testing bulk milk samples for antibodies derived from field virus and conventional vaccines but not from gE-deleted marker vaccines. Importing countries should consider only vaccinated animals for import. They should require that the animals are seronegative prior to vaccination.

An association with a rank correlation of 0.55 (p = 0.06) was obtained between monthly rainfall and monthly abortions for a group of 24 farms in tropical Australia where cows grazed predominantly summer rain-dependent pasture. A similar association was found among cows grazing nitrogen-fertilised, irrigated pasture in winter in the same area. On farms with irrigated pasture the first service conception and abortion rates in herds which grazed intensively during the night (abortion 8.9%; first service conception 42.9%) differed significantly from those which grazed during the day (abortion 6.4%; first service conception 52.9%), and this suggested that increased abortion rates and decreased first conception rates may be part of the one syndrome. An hypothesis was developed that the feeding of immature nitrogen-fertilised pasture, rich in protein and stimulated by rain or irrigation, is associated with an increased abortion rate and a depressed conception rate. Other evidence included an increased susceptibility of first lactation cows to abortion, a lower abortion rate in late pregnant dry cows fed more mature pasture, a 20% repeat abortion rate in the population sampled and the lack of conclusive evidence for infectious and selected non-infectious agents. There were no other observed clinical signs in most aborting cows.
A prospective serologic investigation was undertaken on 3 California dairies (herds 1, 3, and 4, as previously designated in a report on abortion surveillance) to determine if fetal loss was associated with infectious disease agents in cows. The diagnostic problem in these herds was typical of many dairies in that abortions were not discovered for several months and aborted fetuses were seldom recovered. Blood from approximately 100 pregnant cows in each herd was sampled at monthly intervals, beginning when the cows were palpated at approximately 40 days gestation. Sera were tested for antibodies to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and to the Leptospira serovars pomona, hardjo, grippotyphosa, icterohemorrhagiae, canicola, and szwajizak. Logn antibody titers were examined for an association with fetal loss, using multivariate methods of logistic regression and survival analysis. Of the 325 cows followed, 37 aborted, and no fetuses were recovered. Statistical analyses indicated that significant fetal loss was associated with high titers to L. hardjo and with low titers to L. szwajizak (herds 1 and 4) and BVDV (herd 1). Results for herd 3 revealed a connection between abortion and L. icterohemorrhagiae (P = 0.036) and L. canicola (P = 0.050) and possible vaccinal protection against abortion caused by L. grippotyphosa (P = 0.027 and 0.015). For herd 4, there was a marginally significant tendency for the first vaccination of the gestation against leptospirosis to have protected against fetal death (P = 0.077). Advantages of the diagnostic design were that it permitted comparison of titers of aborted cows with those of nonaborted cows and it considered vaccination-induced titers in analyses.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
HIV1 infection of mononuclear phagocytes is now well established, whereas HIV2 infection of these cells is less well documented. In this work, we studied the replication of the HIV2ROD strain in the U-937 promonocytic cell line and compared it with that of the HIV1BRU strain. p24 antigen and RT (reverse transcriptase) activity were assessed at regular intervals in cell-free supernatants, as was the infectiousness of the produced virus. In the case of HIV2, after a phase of high cell mortality, a chronically infected cell population releasing infectious virions was obtained (the infection remained stable after 60 days of culture). By contrast, for a given multiplicity of infection (i.e. 10,000 cpm RT/10(6) cells), HIV1 replication in U-937 cells was only transient (i.e. 14 days), leading to the synthesis of slightly infectious and probably defective viral particles. Abortive infection was finally obtained, as confirmed by a polymerase chain reaction which failed to detect any proviral HIV1 DNA in the cell line. These results indicate a marked difference between HIV1 and HIV2 in their in vitro interaction with mononuclear phagocytes.

Developmental stability reflects the ability of a genotype to undergo stable development of a phenotype under given environmental conditions. Deviations from developmental stability arise from the disruptive effects of a wide range of environmental and genetic stresses, and such deviations are usually measured in terms of fluctuating asymmetry and phenodeviants. Fluctuating asymmetry is the most sensitive indicator of the ability to cope with stresses during ontogeny. There is considerable evidence that developmental stability, and especially fluctuating asymmetry, is a useful measure of phenotypic and genetic quality, because it covaries negatively with performance in multiple fitness domains in many species, including humans. It is proposed that developmental stability is an important marker of human health. Our goal is to initiate formally the integration of the sciences of evolutionary biology, developmental biology and medicine. We believe that this integrative framework provides a significant addition to the growing field of Darwinian medicine. The literature linking developmental stability and disease in humans is reviewed. Recent biological theoretical treatments pertaining to developmental stability are applied to a range of human health issues such as genetic diseases, ageing and survival, subfertility, abortion, child maltreatment by parents, cancer, infectious diseases, physiological and mental health, and physical attractiveness as a health certification.
A three year survey on sheep deaths and their causes was conducted on 10 commercial farms in the north of Scotland. Diseases and other trauma associated with the perinatal period accounted for 56.81% of all ewe deaths, while pneumonia, parasitic gastroenteritis, torsion of the bowel and haemorrhagic enteritis (redgut) accounted for a further 21.7%. No one disease condition predominated in the rams and hoggs. In lambs, most deaths occurred between birth and four days old (77.86%). Causes came in the form of starvation and exposure (34.2%), stillbirths (18.2%), lambing injuries (11.06%), infectious conditions (8.0%), dystocia (7.6%) and abortion (5.2%). The overall death rate among the lambs was 14.2%.
