During the course of nine years 494 patients suffering from oesophageal cancer have come under our observation, including 13 cases characterised by the phenomenon of double neoplastic localisation. In some cases, in view of the histological identity of the two neoplasias, remote endocanicular colonisation may be presumed, while in other cases the rise of the tumour "disease" may be correlated with the action of carcinogenetic agents on sites of lesser resistance in organisms whose immunitary defences have been decreased in relation to neoblastogenesis. This is supported by the increase in the incidence of malignant neoplasias in patients subjected to immuno-suppressive treatment.

The study attempts a comparative evaluation of 5 Styrian regions as to their mortality rate of cancer in general as well as cancer of the respiratory system in particular. Regions were not established according to political or administrative districts; instead, communities from areas with homogeneous characteristics as to topography, climate, and air-quality were combined in regions. Among these 5 regions, 2 are industrial centers (region Voitsberg-Köflach with 31.000 inh. and Aichfeld-Murboden with 45.000 inh.), 2 have low to average air pollution (Ausseerland with 13.000 inh. and Deutschlandsberg with 13.000 inh.), 1 is a city with appr. 247.000 inh. (Graz). The disadvantage of the small number of samples was compensated for by observing each region over a period of 11 years. The results clearly demonstrate that the region Voitsberg-Köflach has a statistically significant high mortality rate both of cancer in general as well as of cancer of respiratory system in particular. The collected data provide ample ground for the assumption that environmental conditions are to a large degree responsible for the high mortality rate; this study will provide the basis for systematic investigations of its causes.

The recording of new cases of cancer in the Bas-Rhin department interest about 883 000 persons in 1975. 3 073 cancer cases have been registered. The data show an incidence of 424 per 100 000 for male population and 309 per 100 000 among female population. Among male population: lung cancer is the most frequent, it represents 17.1 per cent of male cancers with an incidence of 72.5. In second position cancer of the rectum and recto-sigmoid which represents 7.9 per cent of cancers; it has an incidence of 33.4 per cent. Then followed in this order: prostate cancer with an incidence of 32.3, colon cancer with an incidence of 30.1, cancer of the stomach, and bladder. Among female population: breast cancer is by far the most frequent, it represents 27.5 per cent of all cancers, the incidence is 88.4; next corpus uteri cancer with an incidence of 29.5; colon cancer with an incidence of 25.4, followed by cervix uteri cancer with an incidence of 22.1. The genital localizations, on the whole represent 23.2 per cent of cancers with an incidence of 75.3. It is too early to interprete the recorded disparities among the different districts, nevertheless, one can think that the low rates reported in some districts is due to an under-recording.
The purpose of this study was to investigate mortality patterns of aluminum reduction plant workers. A cohort was formed of 21,829 workers with five or more years employment in 14 reduction plants. Progress of the study was reported quarterly to a Tripartite Committee consisting of representatives from labor, management and government. Although the results of other studies relative to an excess of lung cancer in aluminum workers were not confirmed, there were indications of a higher than expected mortality in pancreatic cancer, lymphohematopoietic cancers, genitourinary cancer, nonmalignant respiratory disease and benign and unspecified neoplasms.
The data available on mortality of the white population of the United States from 1940 to 1975 do not confirm the presence of an epidemic of cancer in our society. Overall death rates and non-respiratory cancer death rates are declining in these groups over a wide spectrum of ages for both sexes. Respiratory cancer death rates have been increasing, but appear to show a current decline in the younger age groups. The need for objective mortality data by specific cause of death and geographic area is evident. Measures to protect the environment should be undertaken within the context of a generally improving mortality experience of the U.S. population.
Standardized mortality rates for eight major types of cancer (as well as for all types of cancer considered together) in four South African population groups are compared with each other and with rates in selected countries. Wide differences among the races in South Africa are displayed, and several rates are shown to parallel those in other population groups abroad. This lends support to the belief that socio-economic factors (rather than solely genetic factors) play the major role in cancer causation.

The analysis of the trends of the principal causes of deaths in Czechoslovakia indicated leading second position of malignant neoplasms in the whole mortality over the period 1949 through 1978. The rapidly growing all sites cancer mortality trends in males together with their unimportant changes in females resulted in the steadily increasing overmortality of males. Among digestive organs important decrease of stomach and in lesser extent also of oesophageal cancers with simultaneously increasing mortality trends of malignant neoplasms of colon, pancreas and rectum in both sexes were observed. The trends in the cancer mortality of respiratory organs as well as the increasing rates of the whole male cancer mortality were strongly influenced with dramatical increase of lung cancers while these of larynx showed slow increase in males and decrease in females. The rapidly growing mortality trends showed also breast cancer, reaching at the end of the investigated period the first position in the whole female cancer mortality, while the increasing mortality from the malignant neoplasms of the different genital and urinary organs of females were less or more expressed. The relatively high average annual increase was characteristic for the mortality trends of the malignant neoplasms of bladder and other urinary organs and of prostate gland and testis in males. Among other sites the increasing mortality trends from malignant neoplasms of brain and leukemias were of interest.

7467 Reticulum cell sarcomas have been recorded in the register of patients suffering form carcinoma (1960 to 1973). This report deals with the distribution of age, sex, size and frequency during the different years and in different districts. Moreover, problems of confirming the diagnoses and of histological findings are considered. The chances of survival of patients suffering from reticulum cell sarcoma (about 16,0% survive the five-year limit, 10,3% survive the ten-year-limit) are examined for the therapy, age and size of the tumour also being taken into account.
