Regression analysis of the effect of full and partial lactation on post-partum amenorrhoea in lower middle class Indian females.

This study presents a simple regression analysis of the impact of full and partial breast feeding on post-partum amenorrhoea (PPA) in lower middle class Indian women. The study has been done on a sample of hospital based data collected in 1992. The analysis shows a highly significant correlation. Further, the impact of lactation on PPA was notably less in case with partial breast feeding as compared to those with full breast feeding.

Logistic regression analysis for glaucoma diagnosis using Stratus Optical Coherence Tomography.

PURPOSES: The purposes of this study are to investigate the diagnostic performance of logistic regression analysis (LRA) applied to multidimensional information on glaucoma disease and to determine the area under receiver operator characteristic curves (AROCs) for differentiating between normal and glaucomatous eyes in the Taiwan Chinese population based on the summary data from the Stratus Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). METHODS: One randomly selected eye from each of the 89 patients with glaucoma and from each of the 88 age- and gender-matched normal individuals were included in the study. Nine glaucomatous eyes and eight normal eyes were excluded as a result of poor OCT scans. Finally, 80 normal eyes and 80 glaucomatous eyes (mean deviation, -4.5 +/- 4.12 dB) were analyzed. The whole dataset was split into four equal sets. Each set combines 20 patients with glaucoma and 20 normal individuals. Fourfold crossvalidation was conducted. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and optic nerve head were measured by Stratus OCT in each patient. Twenty-five OCT parameters were included in a LRA method to determine the best combination of parameters for discriminating between glaucomatous and healthy eyes based on AROCs. RESULTS: With the LRA method, the AROC for glaucoma detection was 0.911 with sensitivity at 80% and 90% specificity were 83.7% and 80.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with the OCT-provided parameters, the LRA method improved the ability to differentiate between normal and glaucomatous eyes in the Taiwan Chinese population.

Estimation of mitral valve area from regression analysis of the pressure gradient in mitral stenosis.

Estimation of mitral valve area (MVA) in the cardiac catheterization laboratory is prone to pitfalls because of the time required for calculations and inaccuracies in the measurement of cardiac output. Because the rate of decrease in the mitral gradient directly correlates with the severity of mitral stenosis, an on-line estimate of MVA at the time of catheterization may be possible with regression analysis of digitized pressure recordings. A total of 61 comparisons of mitral gradient measurements and MVA were obtained in 37 patients at diagnostic catheterization and in 24 patients after balloon mitral valvotomy. Linear and nonlinear regression parameters yielded pressure half-time values and empiric constants similar to those used in Doppler echocardiography for estimation of MVA. The correlations derived from linear analysis were as good as those obtained from nonlinear analysis: from linear analysis, MVAregression = 0.79.MVAGorlin -0.03; r2 = 0.64, p = 0.0001; and from double exponential analysis, MVAregression = 0.86.MVAGorlin -0.07; r2 = 0.74; p = 0.0001. The correlations were not significantly affected by the presence of mild to moderate mitral regurgitation or whether they were obtained after balloon valvotomy. In summary, linear regression analysis yields accurate estimates of MVA despite the theoretical superiority of nonlinear methods. On-line digital analysis of mitral gradient tracings may thus be useful at the time of diagnostic cardiac catheterization or balloon mitral valvotomy to assess the severity of mitral stenosis and the response to interventions.

Poisson regression analysis in clinical research.

Generalized linear models (GLM) are now widely used in analyzing data from clinical trials and in epidemiological studies. In Poisson regression, which fits in the framework of a GLM, the response variable is a count that follows the Poisson distribution. This article describes the basic methodology of Poisson regression analysis and its application to clinical research. Overdispersion, model diagnostics, and sample size issues are discussed. The methodology is illustrated on a data set from a clinical trial for the treatment of bladder cancer, using a new procedure (PROC GENMOD) in the statistical package SAS.

The evaluation of educational and economic effects on life expectation by linear regression analysis.

Socioeconomic effects are supposed to have a fairly long time delay in regard to health development. Taking into consideration time lags, correlation and regression analysis are executed to explain the difference in health levels which exist among countries. The infant mortality rate, life expectation at birth, adult literacy rate, proportions of school enrollment and GNP per capita are taken as variables and their characteristics are discussed. In addition, countries are divided into three groups, i.e. low income, middle income, and industrialized countries, to show that the educational and economic effects on health development vary according to the economic level of the countries.

A novel simple QSAR model for the prediction of anti-HIV activity using multiple linear regression analysis.

A quantitative-structure activity relationship was obtained by applying Multiple Linear Regression Analysis to a series of 80 1-[2-hydroxyethoxy-methyl]-6-(phenylthio) thymine (HEPT) derivatives with significant anti-HIV activity. For the selection of the best among 37 different descriptors, the Elimination Selection Stepwise Regression Method (ES-SWR) was utilized. The resulting QSAR model (R (2) (CV) = 0.8160; S (PRESS) = 0.5680) proved to be very accurate both in training and predictive stages.

[Stagewise estimation for regression analysis when independent variables are latent variables].

Psychological research often deals with psychological constructs that cannot be directly measured. Thus independent variables of regression analysis for an observable dependent variable are sometimes latent variables (factors) that are defined independently of the dependent variable. In this study we pointed out the problem associated with the use of factor analysis for the combined set of dependent variable and independent variables in such a cases; that is, the derived factors are different from those originally intended, and the true regression parameters cannot be reproduced. We proposed a stagewise estimation method to solve the problem. This method estimates parameters of measurement equation in the first stage, and then estimates parameters of structural equation in the second stage. Our proposed method enables calculation of standard errors of estimators using Bootstrapping method. Numerical studies showed that the proposed method improves the estimation efficiency over the conventional methods, and provides estimates which are robust with respect to misspecification of model.

Regression analysis of data with correlated errors: an example from the NHLBI twin study.

Epidemiologic studies often involve genetically related individuals, spouses, or repeat observations on the same individual. When regression analysis is required in such studies, significant correlation of the residuals may affect the estimates of the standard errors of the regression coefficients. Ordinary least squares may not provide the best (minimum variance) estimates of the regression coefficients. Generalized least squares (weighted least squares) is more appropriate when the covariance matrix of the errors is known or can be estimated with some degree of confidence. Data from a twin study of pulmonary function were analyzed by three different regression techniques and comparisons of the coefficients and standard errors are made to illustrate the potential effects of correlated errors.

Postoperative wound infection: application of multiple regression analysis to patients parameters.

The effect of patient parameters (age, sex, wound drainage, and wound description) on postoperative wound infection is evaluated with the aid of multiple regression analysis. The resulting multiple correlation matrix confirmed that the four parameters are not correlated. Hence, the possibility that parameter interactions introduce a bias into the observations was excluded. In the multiple regression model developed, the regression coefficients of all four parameters were statistically significant. When the relative significance of each parameter was considered, the most significant one was wound contamination, followed by the presence of wound drains. The least significant were the patient's age and sex. Male sex was a relatively more significant parameter when compared with age up to 42 years. However, beyond that critical point patient age appear to be relatively more significant than male sex. The usefulness of the model developed and possible application areas are fully discussed.

On the regression analysis of tumour recurrence rates.

Regression models with mixture (random) components are proposed for the statistical analysis of recurrent events when waiting times between successive events are unknown. These models allow adjustment of parameter estimates for unobserved heterogeneity in the population (due for example to missing covariates) or overdispersion resulting from inexact distributional assumptions. The models are illustrated by a study of recurrence rates of superficial bladder cancer in men.

The removal of the eye-movement artifact from the EEG by regression analysis in the frequency domain.

A new method to remove the eye-movement artifact from the electro-encephalogram (EEG) is described. It is based on complex regression analysis. Transfer of eye-movement activity to EEG can have frequency dependent amplitude and phase characteristics. The proposed method is suitable for handling such transfer because the regression formula is used in the frequency domain. The method is demonstrated with artificial signal-in-noise EOG (electro-oculogram) and EEG series. In the EEG noise an event related potential (ERP) is buried as a constant signal and in the EOG noise a changing EOG response (saccadic eye-movement) is simulated before adding the whole series to the EEG series. Also decreasing levels of transfer from EOG on EEG leads are simulated as the EOG artifact diminishes from the frontal to the occipital area. Because of the possible frequency dependent phase characteristics also a 24 msec time-shift of the EOG is simulated. The complex regression coefficient (P(jw)) of the EOG and EEG series is first calculated and then 'common' regression is removed from the EEG. To do this the estimated P(jw) is tested for significance with the F-statistic and significant EOG activity is subtracted in the frequency domain from the EEG on a single trial base. Then each EEG record is inversely transformed to the time domain. It was found that the complex P(jw)s as used in the subtraction formula, corrects very accurately the influence of the EOG artifact on EEG activity. Finally an application of the method in a real life situation is reported.

A longitudinal study of plasma cortisol and depressive symptomatology by random regression analysis.

The authors utilized a random regression model to test the longitudinal relationship between depressive symptomatology and plasma cortisol levels obtained before and after the administration of dexamethasone in 62 affectively ill inpatients. This statistical model for longitudinal studies permits the inclusion of subjects with incomplete data as well as subjects measured at different time points. The most significant relationships were found between decreases in depressive symptoms and decreases in the 8:30 AM predexamethasone and the 4:00 PM postdexamethasone cortisol values. Patients were also classified as responders or nonresponders, and the rate of change in several plasma cortisol measures were separately analyzed for these two groups. No differences in the rate of change in plasma cortisol levels were found between responders and nonresponders. These results suggest that the decreases in cortisol production associated with clinical improvement may be partially explained by a regression toward the mean effect. Some of the possible explanations for these results are discussed.

[Nonlinear regression analysis of cardiac enzyme kinetic model with modified simplex method and DUD method using SAS software].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of modified simplex method and DUD method using SAS software for nonlinear regression analysis of cardiac enzyme kinetic model. METHOD: By using cardiac enzyme kinetic one-compartment mathematical model, nonlinear regression results obtained from DUD methods using SAS software and modified simplex method were compared with the same starting values to fit the creatine kinase curves in 22 patients with acute myocardial infarction. RESULTS: The parameters calculated by DUD method and modified simplex method were the same in 4 cases, and smaller least square was resulted from DUD method in 4 cases. In the other 14 cases, modified simplex method yielded smaller least square. The mean value of the least square calculated by modified simplex method was less than that by DUD method (867 747 vs 6 712 989, P=0.013). CONCLUSION: Modified simplex method appears to be more adequate than DUD method in estimating circulatory parameters of the one-compartment model.

Statistical issues of regression analysis on development of an age-predictive equation.

Several statistical information criteria and other statistical issues such as residual examinations and multi-collinearity in regression analysis were argued to establish the predictive equation of age from physical fitness measurements. These independent variables of physical fitness, body composition, two blood pressures, and bone strength were taken from 31 Japanese males (48 +/- 11.9 years old) living in rural areas. The following equation was selected as the optimal one according to Akaike's information criterion: ŷ = 90.0 -1.294 * SITUP - 0.467 * MAP - 0.094 * BALANCE (R = 0.837). When all ten variables were included in the initial equation, R was 0.864, and the highest R* (R adjusted for d.f.) was observed at the fifth step.

A multiple regression analysis for accurate background subtraction in 99Tcm-DTPA renography.

A technique for accurate background subtraction in 99Tcm-DTPA renography is described. The technique is based on a multiple regression analysis of the renal curves and separate heart and soft tissue curves which together represent background activity. It is compared, in over 100 renograms, with a previously described linear regression technique. Results show that the method provides accurate background subtraction, even in very poorly functioning kidneys, thus enabling relative renal filtration and excretion to be accurately estimated.

Therapeutic and clinico-pathological factors in the survival of 1,469 patients with primary cutaneous malignant melanoma in clinical stage I. A multivariate regression analysis.

Therapeutic and clinico-pathological data of 1,469 patients with clinical stage I malignant melanoma of the skin without histological evidence of fibrotic areas of regression were examined by multivariate regression analysis. In accordance with a previous analysis anatomical site of tumour, tumour thickness, level of invasion, mitotic rate, ulceration, lymphocytic reaction, dominant type of invasive tumour cell, and sex were found to act as independent risk factors. The present analysis, furthermore, showed that size of resection margin, diagnostic biopsy, removal of the deep fascia, age at surgery, as well as presence and depth of nevus cells did not influence prognosis when adjusting for the independent risk factors.

The use of neural networks and logistic regression analysis for predicting pathological stage in men undergoing radical prostatectomy: a population based study.

PURPOSE: Clinical under staging occurs in 40% to 60% of patients who undergo radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. To decrease under staging several methods of predicting pathological stage preoperatively have been developed based on statistical logistic regression analysis and neural networks. To our knowledge none has been validated in our homogeneous regional patient population to date. We created logistic regression and neural network models, and implemented and adapted them into our practice. We also compared the 2 methods to determine their value and practicality in daily clinical practice. We present the results of our novel approach for predicting pathological staging of prostate adenocarcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1986 and 1999, 600 white men from the Aragon region of Spain underwent surgery for prostate cancer; of whom 468 were selected for study. Predictive study variables included patient age, clinical stage, biopsy Gleason score and preoperative prostate specific antigen (PSA). The predicted result included in analysis was organ confined or nonorgan confined disease. Data were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression and a supervised neural network (multilayer perceptron and radial basis function). Results were compared by comparing the areas under the receiver operating characteristics curves. RESULTS: We generated 5 logistic regression models. The model created with clinical staging, Gleason biopsy score and PSA distributed in 5 categories (p <0.001) with an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.840 proved to be most predictive of pathological stage. Similarly of the 6 neural network models evaluated the radial basis function model, which included age, clinical stage, Gleason biopsy score and preoperative PSA distributed in 5 categories with an area under the curve of 0.882, proved the most predictive but not superior to the logistic regression model. The difference in the area under the curves in the 2 chosen models was 0.042 (p = 0.1). CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to generate useful predictive models of organ confined disease using logistic regression or neural networks with high indexes of clinical and statistical validity. However, using these variables neural networks did not prove to be better than logistic regression analysis. Therefore, better predictive variables must be identified, preferably nonlinear characteristics with respect to the probability of organ confined tumor, to generate better predictive models using neural networks.
