Electron microscopic studies on primary mesenchyme cell ingression and gastrulation in relation to vegetal pole cell behavior in sea urchin embryos.

Early morphogenetic events of primary mesenchyme cell (PMC) ingression and gastrulation were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, with special attention directed to changes in the shape of vegetal pole cells, the length of their microvilli, and interactions between microvilli and the hyaline layer (HL). Eight cells (vegetal pole cells) with elongated microvilli remained in the vegetal pole region while surrounding cells ingressed into the blastocoel to form the primary mesenchyme. These vegetal pole cells indented with the surrounding cells at the stage of gastrulation. The outer surface area with elongated microvilli of vegetal pole cells expanded at the stage of PMC ingression, but was considerably reduced at gastrulation. Microvilli on vegetal pole cells continued to adhere to the HL up to the stage of PMC ingression, but ceased to do so at the time of gastrulation. Thus, the area with separated HL, which is restricted to the region of the PMC released at the stage of PMC ingression, spreads almost entirely throughout the area of the indenting vegetal plate at gastrulation. The apical lamina, apparently consisting of fibrous material intertwinning the stalks of the microvilli, filled the space between the HL and ectodermal cells. The cells surrounding those of the vegetal pole and indenting with those at the stage of gastrulation appeared to behave in the same way as ingressing PMCs in both cell-shape and loss of adhesion of microvilli to HL. The role of vegetal pole cells in early morphogenetic events is discussed.

Echocardiography in infective endocarditis: reassessment of prognostic implications of vegetation size determined by the transthoracic and the transesophageal approach.

In 105 patients with active infective endocarditis, disease-associated complications defined as severe heart failure (New York Heart Association class IV), embolic events and in-hospital death were correlated to the vegetation size determined by both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. A detailed comparison between anatomic and echocardiographic findings, performed in a subgroup of 80 patients undergoing surgery or necropsy, revealed that true valvular vegetations can be reliably identified by echocardiography in the vast majority of patients; the detection rate was significantly higher for the transesophageal (90%) than for the transthoracic (58%) approach, particularly when infected prosthetic valves were evaluated. However, an accurate echocardiographic differentiation between true vegetations and other endocarditis-induced valve destruction (ruptured leaflets or chordae) is impossible. The correlation of vegetation size with endocarditis-associated complications showed that patients with a vegetation diameter greater than 10 mm had a significantly higher incidence of embolic events than did those with a vegetation diameter less than or equal to 10 mm (22 of 47 versus 11 of 58; p less than 0.01). Particularly for patients with mitral valve endocarditis, a vegetation diameter greater than 10 mm was highly sensitive in identifying patients at risk for embolic events. Vegetation size, however, was not significantly different in patients with and without severe heart failure or in patients surviving or dying during acute endocarditis. In addition, no significant correlation was found between vegetation size and location of endocarditis or type of infective organism.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The influence of extensive vegetated roofs on runoff water quality.

The influence of extensive sedum-moss vegetated roofs on runoff water quality was studied for four full scale installations located in southern Sweden. The aim of the study was to ascertain whether the vegetated roof behaves as a sink or a source of pollutants and whether the age of a vegetated roof influences runoff quality. The runoff quality from vegetated roofs was also compared with the runoff quality from non-vegetated roofs located in study areas. The following metals and nutrients were investigated: Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Pb, Zn, NO3-N, NH4-N, Tot-N, PO4-P, and Tot-P. The results show that, with the exception of nitrogen, vegetated roofs behave as source of contaminants. While in lower concentrations than normally found in urban runoff, some metals appear in concentrations that would correspond to moderately polluted natural water. Nitrate nitrogen is retained by the vegetation or soil or both. Apart from the oldest, the studied vegetated roofs contribute phosphate phosphorus to the runoff. The maintenance of the vegetation systems on the roofs has to be carefully designed in order to avoid storm-water contamination; for instance, the use of easily dissolvable fertilizers should be avoided.

Very early and transient vegetal-plate expression of SpKrox1, a Krüppel/Krox gene from Stronglyocentrotus purpuratus.

All endodermal and mesenchymal cells of the sea urchin embryo descend from the vegetal plate, a thickened epithelium of approximately 50 cells arising at the early blastula stage. Cell types that derive from the vegetal plate are specified conditionally by inductive interactions with underlying micromeres, but the molecular details of vegetal-plate specification remain unresolved. In a search for regulatory proteins that have roles in vegetal-plate specification, a screen was performed to clone Krüppel/Krox-related genes from a Strongylocentrotus purpuratus embryo cDNA library. One newly identified clone, named SpKrox1, contained four zinc fingers and a leucine zipper domain. SpKrox1 expression was low in unfertilized eggs, increased severalfold to the early blastula stage and decreased between the early gastrula and pluteus stages. SpKrox1 mRNA was first seen in macromeres of 16-cell stage embryos and was restricted to cells of the developing vegetal plate thereafter. Vegetal-plate expression corresponded to a ring of cells around the blastopore and overlapped the expression patterns of other genes with potential roles in vegetal plate-specification. As the vegetal-plate cells invaginated into the blastopore, SpKrox1 expression was lost, suggesting that its role was not in endoderm differentiation per se but rather in the initial establishment of the vegetal plate.

Vegetation dynamics--simulating responses to climatic change.

A modelling approach to simulating vegetation dynamics is described, incorporating critical processes of carbon sequestration, growth, mortality and distribution. The model has been developed to investigate the responses of vegetation to environmental change, at time scales from days to centuries and from the local to the global scale. The model is outlined and subsequent tests, against independent data sources, are relatively successful, from the small scale to the global scale. Tests against eddy covariance observations of carbon exchange by vegetation indicated significant differences between measured and simulated net ecosystem production (NEP). NEP is the net of large fluxes due to gross primary production and respiration, which are not directly measured and so there is some uncertainty in explaining differences between observations and simulations. In addition it was noted that closer agreement of fluxes was achieved for natural, or long-lived managed vegetation than for recently managed vegetation. The discrepancies appear to be most closely related to respiratory carbon losses from the soil, but this area needs further exploration. The differences do not scale up to the global scale, where simulated and measured global net biome production were similar, indicating that fluxes measured at the managed observed sites are not typical globally. The model (the Sheffield Dynamic Global Vegetation Model, SDGVM) has been applied to contemporary vegetation dynamics and indicates a significant CO2 fertilisation effect on the sequestration of atmospheric CO2. The terrestrial carbon sink for the 20th century is simulated to be widespread between latitudes 40 degrees S and 65 degrees N, but is greatest between 10 degrees S and 6 degrees N, excluding the effects of human deforestation. The mean maximum sink capacity over the 20th century is small, at 25 gC m(-2) year(-1), or approximately 1% of gross primary production. Simulations of vegetation dynamics under a scenario of future global warming indicate a gradual decline in the terrestrial carbon sink, with the capacity to absorb human emissions of CO2 being reduced from 20% in 2000 to approximately 2% between 2075 and 2100. The responses of carbon sequestration and vegetation structure and distribution to stabilisation of climate and CO2 may extend for up to 50 years after stabilisation has occurred.

BMP regulates vegetal pole induction centres in early xenopus development.

BACKGROUND: Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) plays an important role in mesoderm patterning in Xenopus. The ectopic expression of BMP-4 protein hyperventralizes embryos, whereas embryos expressing a BMP-2/4 dominant-negative receptor (DNR) are hyperdorsalized. Mesoderm is initially induced in the marginal zone by cells in the underlying vegetal pole. While much is known about BMP's expression and role in patterning the marginal zone, little is known about its early role in regulating vegetal mesoderm induction centre formation. RESULTS: The role of BMP in regulating formation of vegetal mesoderm inducing centres during early Xenopus development was examined. Ectopic BMP-4 expression in vegetal pole cells inhibited dorsal mesoderm induction but increased ventral mesoderm induction when recombined with animal cap ectoderm in Nieuwkoop explants. 32-cell embryos injected with BMP-4 RNA in the most vegetal blastomere tier were not hyperdorsalized by LiCl treatment. The ectopic expression of Smad or Mix.1 proteins in the vegetal pole also inhibited dorsal mesoderm induction in explants and embryos. Expression of the BMP 2/4 DNR in the vegetal pole increased dorsal mesoderm induction and inhibited ventral mesoderm induction in explants and embryos. CONCLUSIONS: These results support a role for BMP signalling in regulating ventral vegetal and dorsal vegetal mesoderm induction centre formation during early Xenopus development.

Medical aspects of the persistent vegetative state (1).

This consensus statement of the Multi-Society Task Force summarizes current knowledge of the medical aspects of the persistent vegetative state in adults and children. The vegetative state is a clinical condition of complete unawareness of the self and the environment, accompanied by sleep-wake cycles, with either complete or partial preservation of hypothalamic and brain-stem autonomic functions. In addition, patients in a vegetative state show no evidence of sustained, reproducible, purposeful, or voluntary behavioral responses to visual, auditory, tactile, or noxious stimuli; show no evidence of language comprehension or expression; have bowel and bladder incontinence; and have variably preserved cranial-nerve and spinal reflexes. We define persistent vegetative state as a vegetative state present one month after acute traumatic or nontraumatic brain injury or lasting for at least one month in patients with degenerative or metabolic disorders or developmental malformations. The clinical course and outcome of a persistent vegetative state depend on its cause. Three categories of disorder can cause such a state: acute traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuries; degenerative and metabolic brain disorders, and severe congenital malformations of the nervous system. Recovery of consciousness from a posttraumatic persistent vegetative state is unlikely after 12 months in adults and children. Recovery from a nontraumatic persistent vegetative state after three months is exceedingly rare in both adults and children. Patients with degenerative or metabolic disorders or congenital malformations who remain in a persistent vegetative state for several months are unlikely to recover consciousness. The life span of adults and children in such a state is substantially reduced. For most such patients, life expectancy ranges from 2 to 5 years; survival beyond 10 years is unusual.

beta-Catenin is essential for patterning the maternally specified animal-vegetal axis in the sea urchin embryo.

In sea urchin embryos, the animal-vegetal axis is specified during oogenesis. After fertilization, this axis is patterned to produce five distinct territories by the 60-cell stage. Territorial specification is thought to occur by a signal transduction cascade that is initiated by the large micromeres located at the vegetal pole. The molecular mechanisms that mediate the specification events along the animal-vegetal axis in sea urchin embryos are largely unknown. Nuclear beta-catenin is seen in vegetal cells of the early embryo, suggesting that this protein plays a role in specifying vegetal cell fates. Here, we test this hypothesis and show that beta-catenin is necessary for vegetal plate specification and is also sufficient for endoderm formation. In addition, we show that beta-catenin has pronounced effects on animal blastomeres and is critical for specification of aboral ectoderm and for ectoderm patterning, presumably via a noncell-autonomous mechanism. These results support a model in which a Wnt-like signal released by vegetal cells patterns the early embryo along the animal-vegetal axis. Our results also reveal similarities between the sea urchin animal-vegetal axis and the vertebrate dorsal-ventral axis, suggesting that these axes share a common evolutionary origin.

Value of antibiotic levels in serum and cardiac vegetations for predicting antibacterial effect of ceftriaxone in experimental Escherichia coli endocarditis.

In a rabbit model of Escherichia coli endocarditis, we studied the penetration into infected vegetations and the antibacterial effect of ceftriaxone. Ceftriaxone was given at different dosages, alone or with an interfering agent, diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, to determine the predictive value of the antibiotic levels in serum or infected vegetations on the antibacterial efficacy. Diclofenac increased the serum terminal half-life of ceftriaxone and increased its extravascular diffusion in tissue cage fluid, as well as in infected vegetations, allowing us to obtain various antibiotic concentrations in the infected site. Two hours after the fourth injection, around the time of peak level in serum, we observed a linear relationship between (i) serum and local antibiotic levels in vegetations, (ii) local antibiotic levels in a range of 142 to 600 X MBC and bacterial titer (log10 CFU/g) in vegetations, and (iii) serum antibiotic levels in a range of 800 to 1,400X MBC and bacterial titer in vegetations. In vivo, antibacterial effect was obtained only with high antibiotic levels in vegetations (greater than or equal to 220X MBC). This was confirmed by incubating vegetations sampled from infected animals in rabbit serum containing ceftriaxone (ex vivo experiment). Given once daily at a therapeutic dosage (30 mg/kg) for 4 days, ceftriaxone exhibited good efficacy (log10 CFU/g of vegetation = 2.41 +/- 2.7 versus 7.41 +/- 0.92 in control animals) and prevented regrowth of bacteria until 24 h after the last injection. We concluded that (i) provided the dose is sufficient, a long-acting cephalosporin can prove effective in severe gram-negative infections even when given infrequently, and (ii) serum antibiotic levels around the peak value, reflecting high effective local levels, could predict the therapeutic efficacy and represent a simple test to monitor the clinical course of a severe infectious process.

Influence of monocytes and antibiotic treatment on tissue factor activity of endocardial vegetations in rabbits infected with Streptococcus sanguis.

A main feature in the pathogenesis of bacterial endocarditis is the activation of the coagulation system via the extrinsic pathway, resulting in the formation of infected endocardial vegetations. Earlier studies gave indirect evidence that monocytes play an important role in the procoagulant response during the course of the disease. In this study, we assessed the role of monocytes more directly. We compared weights and tissue factor activities (TFA) of endocardial vegetations of normal rabbits infected with Streptococcus sanguis with those of rabbits which were treated with the cytostatic drug etoposide (Vepesid; Bristol-Myers Squibb B.V.) to induce a selective monocytopenia. Furthermore, the importance of the presence of bacteria was determined through the influence of antibiotic treatment on TFA, vegetational weight, and infection of the vegetations. The TFA of the vegetations was measured chromogenically by monitoring the factor VII-dependent activation of factor X with an amidolytic assay for factor Xa. We found that the degree of infection and the weight of vegetations of rabbits treated with the cytostatic drug etoposide did not differ from that of untreated rabbits. Their TFA, however, was significantly lower than the TFA of vegetations of rabbits not treated with etoposide. We also found that, as with the monocytopenic rabbits, the weight of the vegetations was not reduced in penicillin G-treated rabbits. The degree of infection and TFA, however, were significantly lower. We conclude that monocytes indeed are involved in the activation of the coagulation system during the course of bacterial endocarditis and that the degree of infection is positively correlated to the TFA of the vegetations.

ELECTRON TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN VEGETATIVE CELLS AND MICROCYSTS OF MYXOCOCCUS XANTHUS.

Dworkin, Martin (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis), and Donald J. Niederpruem. Electron transport system in vegetative cells and microcysts of Myxococcus xanthus. J. Bacteriol. 87:316-322. 1964.-Respiration by intact cells of the fruiting myxobacterium Myxococcus xanthus is cyanide-sensitive and can be demonstrated in the vegetative cells but not in the microcysts. Cell-free particles from both vegetative cells and microcysts have cyanide-sensitive reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidase, diaphorase, NADH cytochrome c reductase, and cytochrome oxidase activities. While the vegetative cell specific activities for NADH oxidase and diaphorase are slightly higher than those for the microcysts, the microcysts have ten times the cytochrome c reductase and cytochrome oxidase activities of the vegetative cells. Furthermore, the respiration of the microcyst particles is considerably less cyanide-sensitive than is that of the vegetative-cell particles. Difference spectra of the cell-free particles of vegetative cells and microcysts are qualitatively identical, showing the presence of b- and c-type cytochrome and flavoprotein. The a-type pigments are clearly present in the extracts of the vegetative cells and are suggested by the spectrum of the microcyst particles. The cytochrome oxidase activity of both extracts is consistent with the presence of a-type pigments in both. The spectra of the carbon monoxide-binding pigments were determined and, by this parameter, qualitative differences appear between the vegetative cells and the microcysts.

Uptake of hematoporphyrin derivative by valvular vegetations in experimental infective endocarditis.

Drugs that localize in valvular vegetations may be useful in the diagnosis and treatment of infective endocarditis. We therefore tested the hypothesis that parenterally injected hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD), which is concentrated in tumors and atherosclerotic plaques, localizes in the vegetations of experimental infective endocarditis. In 14 rabbits, various bacteria were given intra-arterially immediately after injury to the aortic valve. In 12 additional rabbits, sterile vegetations on the aortic valve were produced by the trauma caused by an indwelling catheter that had been in place over a long period. HPD, 2.5 mg/kg, was injected intravenously 1 to 2 days before the animals were killed in six rabbits with sterile vegetations and in seven rabbits with infected vegetations. In all rabbits, multiple vegetations on the aortic valve leaflets were identified. On exposure to ultraviolet light, strong porphyrin fluorescence of all vegetations, whether sterile or infected, was observed only in rabbits given HPD. In two rabbits given HPD 10 weeks after catheter implantation across the aortic valve, however, only mild fluorescence could be detected in healing endocardial vegetations. In frozen sections of HPD-laden lesions, a patchy distribution of fluorescence was observed that was similar to the pattern of HPD localization in atheromatous plaques. Since vegetations in experimental infective endocarditis selectively concentrate HPD, porphyrins could be useful in the diagnosis and treatment of infective endocarditis.

Changes in accessibility and preferences predict children's future fruit and vegetable intake.

BACKGROUND: Most children eat fewer fruits and vegetables than recommended. To be able to design effective interventions, understanding the aetiology of the behaviour is important. Accessibility and preferences have shown to be strong correlates of fruit and vegetable intake in several cross-sectional studies. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of future fruit and vegetable intake and to explore longitudinal patterns of interactions between accessibility and preferences. METHODS: Data presented are based on baseline (September 2001) and follow-up (May/June 2002) surveys of 20 control schools in the Norwegian intervention study Fruits and Vegetables Make the Marks. A total of 816 pupils (77%) completed both baseline and follow-up questionnaires. The average age of the sample at baseline was 11.8 years. The research instrument assessing potential predictor variables was guided by Social Cognitive Theory, and included Accessibility at home, Accessibility at school, Modelling, Intention, Preferences, Self-Efficacy and Awareness of the 5-a-day recommendations. Multiple regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: All independent variables (measured at baseline) were significantly correlated to future fruit and vegetable intake (measured at follow-up). When reported fruit and vegetable intake at baseline (past intake) was included in this model, the effect of the other independent variables diminished. Together with past intake, the observed change in the independent variables from baseline to follow-up explained 43% of the variance in the reported intake at follow-up. Past intake remained the strongest predictor, but changes in accessibility at home and at school, as well as changes in preferences for fruits and vegetables, also explained significant amounts of the variance in fruit and vegetable intake at follow-up. In addition, baseline accessibility was found to moderate the relationship between change in preferences and change in intake. CONCLUSION: Change in accessibility and preferences appear to be important predictors of future fruit and vegetable intake among school children. Interventions should focus on strategies to modify these factors.

Animal and vegetal pole cells of early Xenopus embryos respond differently to maternal dorsal determinants: implications for the patterning of the organiser.

The maternal dorsal determinants required for the specification of the dorsal territories of Xenopus early gastrulae are located at the vegetal pole of unfertilised eggs and are moved towards the prospective dorsal region of the fertilised egg during cortical rotation. While the molecular identity of the determinants is unknown, there are dorsal factors in the vegetal cortical cytoplasm (VCC). Here, we show that the VCC factors, when injected into animal cells activate the zygotic genes Siamois and Xnr3, suggesting that they act along the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway. In addition, Siamois and Xnr3 are activated at the vegetal pole of UV-irradiated embryos, indicating that these two genes are targets of the VCC factors in all embryonic cells. However, the consequences of their activation in cells that occupy different positions along the animal-vegetal axis differ. Dorsal vegetal cells of normal embryos or VCC-treated injected animal cells are able to dorsalise ventral mesoderm in conjugate experiments but UV-treated vegetal caps do not have this property. This difference is unlikely to reflect different levels of activation of FGF or activin-like signal transduction pathways but may reflect the activation of different targets of Siamois. Chordin, a marker of the head and axial mesoderm, is activated by the VCC/Siamois pathway in animal cells but not in vegetal cells whereas cerberus, a marker of the anterior mesendoderm which lacks dorsalising activity, can only be activated by the VCC/Siamois pathway in vegetal cells. We propose that the regionalisation of the organiser during gastrulation proceeds from the differential interpretation along the animal-vegetal axis of the activation of the VCC/beta-catenin/Siamois pathway.

Evaluation of agricultural sediment load reductions using vegetative filter strips of cool season grasses.

Vegetative filter strips for controlling sediment generated from the bare ground (i.e., ground not protected by mulch or plant cover) were studied. Plots consisted of a 4.6-m clean-tilled upslope sediment source area and 12.2-m vegetative filter strip located downslope from the sediment source area. Vegetative filter strips consisted of pure stands of six adapted cool season grasses and two cereal grains. Sediment-laden runoff was transported into the upslope edge of each filter strip. Runoff samples were collected from the lower end of each plot and analyzed for nonflow weighted sediment concentration. The rate of advance of water through each vegetative filter strip was measured. Additional measurements were made to define the plant characteristics of each vegetative filter strip species. In general, planted vegetative filter strips resulted 68% reduction concentration of sediment in initial runoff from a 50-year, 24-hour storm event on prewetted soil. Crested wheatgrass and smooth bromegrass vegetative filter strips reduced water flow velocity an average of 217% compared with the clean-tilled control plot. The length of time that water remained in the vegetative filter strip modestly correlated with average sediment concentration in runoff that was 5.5 g/L and 5.0 g/L, respectively, compared with the control plot, which yielded 16.3 g of sediment/L of runoff. Under dry soil conditions, sediment concentration in runoff from bromegass and crested wheatgrass was reduced by an average of 85% compared with the bare control plot. Length of time for water to advance through the smooth bromegrass and crested wheatgrass vegetative filter strips increased an average of 325% compared with the length of time required to flow through the clean-tilled bare strip.

Copper and lead levels in two popular leafy vegetables grown around Morogoro Municipality, Tanzania.

A study was carried out to determine the levels of two heavy metals, Lead (Pb) and Copper (Cu), in two popular leafy vegetables grown around Morogoro Municipality in Tanzania. Vegetable samples of Pumpkin leaves (Cucurbita moschata) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis) were collected from three sites and analysed for their concentrations of the two metals using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The three sites, namely Mazimbu, Kihonda and Towelo are located within a 10 km perimeter. The site selection was based on the anticipated levels of contamination of the water used for irrigation. The results showed that the levels (mg/100g dry weight) ranged from 0.885 to 1.39 for Copper and 0.05 to 0.315 for Lead. The levels of Lead and Copper varied between the vegetable varieties and from site to site. Vegetables from Mazimbu showed higher concentration levels of the two metals compared to the other sites in both varieties. Towelo vegetables had relatively low concentrations. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in levels of the two metals across the sites but there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the levels of Copper between the two vegetable varieties from all the three sites. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in the levels of Lead between the vegetable varieties. The levels of both Lead and Copper in the two vegetables were found to be below the maximum permissible levels recommended by FAO/WHO for the two metals in vegetables.

Methyl parathion toxicity in vegetated and nonvegetated wetland mesocosms.

Methyl parathion (MeP) was introduced into constructed wetlands for the purpose of assessing the influence of emergent vegetation on transport and toxicity of the pesticide. Two vegetated (90% cover, mainly Juncus effusus) and two nonvegetated wetland cells (each with a water body of 50 x 5.5 x 0.2 m) were each dosed with 6.5 m3 of water containing active ingredient of MeP at 6.6 mg/L associated with suspended soil at 400 mg/L to simulate a storm runoff event. Acute toxicity was assessed by sampling benthic macroinvertebrates at 5, 10, 20, and 40 m from the inlet before and 96 h after contamination and by in situ exposure of Chironomus tentans (Diptera) up to 24 h after contamination. Methyl parathion was detected throughout the nonvegetated wetland cells (70 microg/L at 20 m, 8 microg/L at 40 m), whereas the pesticide was not transported through the vegetated wetland cells (20 microg/L at 20 m, < 0.1 microg/L at 40 m). A three-way analysis of variance using contamination (repeated measure variable), location, and vegetation indicated significant negative effects of contamination on various insect taxa, such as mayfly nymphs and caddisfly larvae. Seven out of the total of 15 species revealed a significant contamination x vegetation effect, with individuals in the vegetated wetlands being less affected. Four species showed a significant contamination x location effect, confirming a higher toxicity in the inlet area of the wetlands. A significant three-way interaction of contamination x vegetation x location was detected in Chironomus sp., which was most strongly affected at the inlet area of the nonvegetated wetland cells. The in situ bioassay employing C. tentans confirmed the positive effect of wetland vegetation on MeP toxicity. These results demonstrate the importance of vegetation for pesticide mitigation in constructed wetlands.

[Quality of life and vegetative status of patients with ulcer disease].

AIM: To analyse features of vegetative status of patients with ulcer disease (UD) with reference to quality of life (QL), course of UD, clinical and secretory-motor characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 200 UD patients were examined. UD was at the stage of exacerbation, new-onset, with a favourable or unfavourable course. The vegetative status was studied by parameters of Kerdo index, variation pulsometry, vegetative crises, insomnia. Quality of life (QL) was assessed by a medicosocial questionnaire. The patients were divided into two groups: with satisfactory and unsatisfactory QL. 120 patients had 24-h pH-metry. RESULTS: Among patients with normal QL normotonics and vagotonics prevailed. Low QL was seen in sympathicotonics. Sleep disorders and vegetative crises were in patients with vegetative imbalance, especially in combination with unsatisfactory QL. The worst QL was associated with sympathicotony. Vegetative balance was observed in a favourable UD course, moderate in time duodenogastric reflux (DGR). Sympathicotony runs with marked DGR, vasotony--minimal DGR, scare symptoms. CONCLUSION: Vegetative dysfunction in UD is due to permanent or paroxysmal vegetative disorders. Sympathicotony is accompanied with dyskinetic pain syndrome and longer duodenogastric reflux which is tolerated bad. Vegetative dystonia is more often in unfavorable course of UD.
