[The hygienic characteristics of the working conditions on moving machinery in crop raising].

Data are reported on the hygienic characteristics of working conditions of machine operators of the main types of agricultural works on moving machines and transport. The main unfavourable factors were air dust, noise, vibration and microclimate. The levels of these factors depended on the types of tractors, kinds of work and season of the year. Prophylactic measures are discussed.

[Working conditions and job-requirement of older industrial blue collar workers and the consequences in employment problems (author's transl)].

In the following passage the reduced vocational capacity of older workers will be discussed as a consequence of the intended high-capacity of workers as well as the non--human working--conditions in industry. The reduced personal sanity and working capacity of older workers point out the high rate of handicaps and the incapacity of vocational engagement. Problems of employment--and this could be pointed out by the high rates of unemployment amongst older workers--does not signify prejudice but indicates the low profitableness of older workers in the capitalistic production system. Finally discussed will be the contribution of a monetary--conpensatoric against a more prophylactic social policy for a better solution of the vocational problems of older blue-collar workers.

She ate not the bread of idleness: exhaustion is related to domestic and salaried working conditions among 539 Québec hospital workers.

Hospital workers completed a questionnaire on domestic and professional working conditions and health symptoms. Workers were asked to estimate the number of domestic work hours, and the degree of sharing of laundry, cleaning, meal preparation and childcare. Responses from the 532 women workers showed an average professional work week of 31.2 hours and an average domestic work week of 19.2 hours. The length of the domestic work week increased with the number of children, and the degree of sharing diminished. Among couples with children, the reported length of the domestic work week correlated highly with an index calculated from the degree of sharing of domestic tasks, and the number and ages of children. Exhaustion and insomnia were associated with work speed and shift work, respectively, at the hospital job, but also with the number of hours of domestic work. Backache, which was related to lifting weights in the workplace, was not associated with the number of reported hours of domestic work. Due to errors in formulating some questions, the study underestimates total hours of domestic work, and, probably, effects of domestic work on health. However, it is the first North American study to show the combined effects of domestic work and paid work on physical health symptoms among women.

Psychosocial working conditions and weight gain among employees.

OBJECTIVE: To study the associations between psychosocial working conditions and weight gain. DESIGN, SUBJECTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Data from postal questionnaires (response rate 67%) sent to 40- to 60-y-old women (n=7093) and men (n=1799) employed by the City of Helsinki in 2000-2002 were analysed. Weight gain during the previous 12 months was the outcome variable in logistic regression analyses. Independent variables included Karasek's job demands and job control, work fatigue, working overtime, work-related mental strain, social support and the work-home interface. The final models were adjusted for age, education, marital status, physical strain and body mass index. RESULTS: In the previous 12 months, 25% of women and 19% of men reported weight gain. Work fatigue and working overtime were associated with weight gain in both sexes. Women who were dissatisfied with combining paid work and family life were more likely to have gained weight. Men with low job demands were less likely to have gained weight. All of these associations were independent of each other. CONCLUSIONS: Few work-related factors were associated with weight gain. However, our study suggests that work fatigue and working overtime are potential risk factors for weight gain. These findings need to be confirmed in prospective studies.

[Improving working conditions of female glass cutters (polishers)].

The analysis of modern vast data on working conditions and health status of female workers involved in glass product processing is presented. The results of the authors' study at one of crystal plants are also given. Due to the above analysis major occupational factors noxious to workers' health have been identified. Some shortcomings of the health-improving measures proposed by a number of researchers have been underlined, among them there are insufficient physiologic standardization of work activity and the absence of complex decisions on workplace ergonomization including design of machine tools and work furniture, dust localization and suction, elimination of constant hand cooling by water.

[The working conditions of medical personnel handling the SMTA brand copper amalgam].

To assess the working conditions of medical staff the authors compared mercury vapor concentrations released during manipulations with various copper amalgams, TMAC-01 tableted copper amalgam manufactured by Nikitiv Mercury Plant, its foreign copper analog manufactured be "Becht" (Germany), and a new CMTA capsulated copper amalgam. Use of CMTA copper amalgam was found not hazardous for medical staff provided sanitary and hygienic regulations were adhered to. Moreover, mercury vapor concentrations released during work allow its use in rooms without ventilation cabinets, whereas tableted copper amalgams TMAC-01 and Becht may be used only in dentistry rooms equipped with such cabinets.

[Working conditions of traditional birth attendants: some characteristics of rural home situations].

This is a study of qualitative and dialectical approach, which subject is to analyze the working conditions of the traditional birth attendants, in a reproductive perspective of work, and for this reason, economically undervalued. The analysis has been constructed having as central category the work, under marxist and feminist premises. Obtained results permit us to state these traditional birth attendants do their work in material and financial poor conditions, related to transportation, access, and still, working environment. The analysis of this practice has given us a possibility to present a discussion on some traits of the traditional birth attendant's work, which is characterized as a reproductive work, economically undervalued, autonomous and eminently feminine. It still configures as a social practice of popular health, legitimated by the community. In the rural domestic obstetrics practice, unequal relations were in evidence since men and women play different roles in the same occupation, being women's responsability the reproduction of the feminine role.

[Exploration of workers' opinions as a source of knowledge of working conditions and their impact on workers' health].

The present system and the range of assessing working conditions with their historical background do not reveal reality as they neither cover the whole working population nor take account of a growing importance of psychosocial and organizational factors characteristic of the work environment and affecting workers' health. The studies carried out on representative samples of different occupational groups may substantially contribute to the advancement of knowledge in this area. This kind of studies have already been carried out in a number of West European countries. The author tries to justify the need for performing such studies in Poland.

[Characteristics of work conditions and evaluation of health status of firemen].

Hygienic evaluation of fireman's work conditions revealed that smoke generation zone near ignition source contains a complex of toxic chemicals in concentrations hundreds of times exceeding the MACs. Staffers are exposed to noise and vibration, levels of which exceed the normal values. Those who more frequently participated in fire extinguishing and therefore faced more toxic factors demonstrate higher levels of disablement.

[Work conditions and health status of workers engaged in nickel production using carbonyl method].

Work conditions in modern production of nickel (carbonyl way) are characterized by high concentrations of sodium tetracarbonyl in the industrial compartments, so the acute and chronic intoxications in the workers could occur. Data on biologic control of the exposure (according to nickel level in the urine and carbon dioxide content of the expired air) prove considerable load of sodium tetracarbonyl in the workers and the inadequate protective means. The workers are characterized by increased prevalence of chronic respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, endocrine and dermatologic diseases.

[The working conditions during the prototype commercial operation of continuous-output equipment in KATEK coal stripping and sanitary improvement measures].

Work conditions were analysed in workers engaged into realization of the new coal extracting line technology producing 5250 m3 of coal per hr in KATEK open-cast mine. Hygienic standards appeared to be followed mainly on the constant working places and in the mining machine cabs, but noise dust parameters were not evaluated in the transloaders, microclimate parameters of excavator and transloaders were not assessed during the cold season. High concentration of dust appear in the air due to mining machines cleaning with the pumped air. Workers engaged into the coal transportation and its intermediate storage appeared to work in more hazardous conditions. Sanitary measures are suggested.
