[Quantitative skin test and inhalation provocation test in asthma using platinum salts].

In this article, the in vivo test results obtained from workers of two platinum separating plants are described. A total of 30 out of 102 workers in two platinum separating plants and 0/40 control subjects showed a positive skin reaction on being provoked with platinum compounds. Twelve out of 15 workers and none of 5 control subjects showed a positive reaction to the bronchial provocation test; this indicates that both tests are highly specific. Three workers with negative skin test reactions showed a clearly positive immediate reaction to the bronchial provocation test with platinum compounds.

Why are nasal and bronchial symptoms mostly perennial in patients with monosensitization to Olea europaea pollen allergens?

In the last few years interest in the clinical aspects of Olea europaea (O.e.) pollen allergy has increased. For many years we have observed in our geographical area a perennial pattern of clinical symptoms in subjects with monosensitization to O.e. allergens without any worsening during the olive pollen season. We tried to demonstrate the clinical relevance of O.e. sensitization in our patients and, moreover, to determine why this pattern is elicited. We selected a group of 26 patients with rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma and an immediate positive skin reaction only to O.e. pollen extract. Using commercially available extracts and reagents, the following diagnostic procedures were performed: Skin prick tests (SPT), specific O.e. IgE assays, nonspecific bronchial provocation tests (NsBPT) and specific nasal provocation tests (sNPT), respectively, in patients with bronchial asthma and rhinitis. Pollen counts and a statistical analysis using Spearman's correlation test were also carried out. 21 of 26 O.e. monosensitive patients showed perennial type of clinical symptoms without any particular worsening during olive pollination season. We found a high degree of statistical significance between the results of SPT/sNPT and serum specific IgE determination. Many patients exhibited a late response after sNPT. No definitive data were derived from our findings, even though the occurrence of many late reactions after sNPT could in part explain the perennial type of nasal symptoms. We would like to emphasize the necessity of better purification and standardization of diagnostic materials and, moreover, suggest further studies with a greater number of O.e. monosensitive patients living in different geographical areas.

The perennial pattern of clinical symptoms in children monosensitized to Olea europaea pollen allergens in comparison with subjects with Parietaria and Gramineae pollinosis.

Because the pediatric age represents a good model to study the correlation between the exposure to allergens and development of respiratory allergy, we investigated the occurrence of a perennial type of symptomatology in children monosensitized to Olea europaea (O.e.) pollen allergens compared with subjects with monosensitization to Parietaria (P) and Gramineae (G) in order to confirm our previous observations in adults. We selected a group of 52 children with rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma and a SPT positivity only to pollens (30 to P, 15 to G, and 7 to O.e.). Using commercially available allergenic extracts and reagents, the following diagnostic procedures were performed: skin prick test (SPT), specific IgE assays (RAST), nonspecific bronchial provocation test (NsBPT) and specific nasal provocation test (sNPT), respectively, in patients with bronchial asthma and rhinitis. Pollen counts and a statistical analysis using Spearman's correlation test were also carried out. Six of seven children with monosensitization to O.e. allergens showed a perennial pattern of symptoms in comparison to 7 of 23 and 3 of 12, respectively, in subjects with P and G pollinosis. All patients with perennial nasal symptoms of O.e. group exhibited a late nasal response after sNPT. Although these findings on nasal response may partially explain the occurrence of a prolonged inflammation of the nose induced by O.e. allergens, we think that other possibilities could be investigated. In our opinion, further studies are necessary using better purified and standardized diagnostic materials and, moreover, a greater number of O.e. monosensitized children living in other geographical areas need to be examined for a comparison of our results with theirs.

Standardized allergen provocation test. Variation in bronchial response.

Standardized bronchial allergen provocation with the same individual allergen dose was performed 3-9 times in 20 symptomless adult asthmatic patients at intervals of 1 week or more during 1/2-22 months in order to study variations in bronchial response. The immediate type reaction was recorded by monitoring FEV1, FVC, PEFR and MEF50% for 30-40 min after provocation. FEV1 was highly significantly correlated to the other variables. The coefficient of variation corresponding to maximum decrease in FEV1 was 23%. All provocations were followed by a bronchial reaction within clinically acceptable limits. There was no indication of hypo- or hypersensitization. It is concluded that although many different factors influence the bronchial response, careful standardization of the provocation procedure leads to a moderate variation in bronchial response, making the allergen provocation test suitable for pathophysiological studies and clinical evaluation of anti-asthmatic drugs.

Tolerance to the protective effect of salmeterol on allergen challenge.

Long-term treatment with inhaled beta 2-agonists may be associated with a deterioration in asthma control, potentially due to tolerance. Regular use of short-acting beta 2-agonists has been shown to induce tolerance to allergen or adenosine 5'-monophosphate challenge. The aim of the study was to detect the efficacy of a single dose and a short-term treatment with salmeterol, a long-acting beta 2-agonist, to protect against early asthmatic reaction (EAR) to allergen. Eight subjects with mild allergic asthma underwent two treatment periods in which subjects performed an allergen challenge (specific bronchial provocation test) protected by a single dose (50 micrograms) of salmeterol (Salm-1) followed by a second specific bronchial provocation test after regular treatment with salmeterol for 1 week (Salm-2), or a single dose of placebo (Plac-1) and regular treatment (1 week) with placebo (Plac-2). Each subject performed both treatments in a randomized order. Each time allergen challenge was performed 1 h after last drug inhalation and it was stopped when the same provocative dose of allergen of a previous screening allergen challenge was achieved. The maximum decrease in FEV1 and area under curve in the first hour after allergen inhalation were significantly lower in Salm-1 (max delta FEV1 %, median [range]: 4%[0 to 9]) with respect to Salm-2, Plac-1, Plac-2 (24%[13 to 38], 31%[19 to 50], 30%[6 to 44], respectively, p < 0.001); there was no difference among Salm-2, Plac-1 and Plac-2. In Salm-1, all subjects were protected against EAR, whereas in Salm-2 only 2 subjects showed a partial protection. In conclusion the protective effect of a single dose of salmeterol against allergen-induced EAR was lost after regular treatment with salmeterol for 1 week. The clinical relevance of this mechanism remains to be elucidated.

Perception of respiratory sensation assessed by means of histamine challenge and threshold loading tests.

BACKGROUND: Some asthmatic patients perceive the severity of their disease rather poorly. These patients may not receive optimal therapy because of underpresentation of their respiratory symptoms. It is therefore important to identify these patients. The present study evaluates a new threshold loading device for measuring the perception of respiratory sensation. This method for measuring the perception of respiratory sensation may be a viable alternative to the bronchial provocation test. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the assessment of the perception of respiratory sensation based on a threshold loading test (inspiratory and expiratory) identifies the same subjects as poor perceivers as compared to assessment by histamine bronchial provocation test. METHOD: In 36 subjects, the perception of respiratory sensation through a threshold loading device was compared to the perception of respiratory sensation during a histamine provocation test. Each test was performed with scoring of the magnitude of the respiratory sensation on a visual analog scale (VAS). The magnitude of the stimulus intensity was indicated by the percentage of decrease in FEV(1) during the histamine challenge test and by the percentage of the subject's maximum mouth pressure (percent maximal inspiratory pressure and percent maximal expiratory pressure) during the threshold loading test. The relationship between VAS values and the stimulus intensity was analyzed by determining the linear regression coefficient between the two parameters. RESULTS: No relationship was found between the perception of the sensation induced by the histamine challenge and that during breathing through a threshold loading device for both inspiration (Rs = 0.15; p = 0.40) and expiration (Rs = 0.13; p = 0.47). We did find a significant relation between the perception of respiratory sensation during the inspiratory and expiratory threshold loading test (Rs = 0.67; p = 0. 0001). Furthermore, we defined a subgroup of patients of special interest: those with low symptoms of breathlessness and high bronchial responsiveness. Compared to the inspiratory and expiratory threshold loading test, the histamine challenge test identified more patients in the special interest group as poorest perceivers. CONCLUSION: The measurement of perception by means of a threshold loading device and a histamine provocation test did not identify the same subjects as poor perceivers, probably because we did not measure the patient's perceptiveness for exactly the same stimuli. In the population with relatively more severe asthma and very low symptoms of breathlessness, the histamine-induced bronchoconstriction test identified more patients as poorest perceivers compared to the threshold loading test.

New in vitro method for detecting asthma allergen. Counting reactive basophils after addition of allergen.

Changes in the morphology and number of basophils were examined after the addition in vitro of house dust extract in cells from seventy-seven patients with bronchial asthma. Morphological changes (reactive basophils) showed a close relation to the end-point titrations of antigen in skin tests, RAST score and bronchial provocation tests, but changes in number of basophils did not. With a RAST score of 2 or greater the change in reactive basophils varied from 40 to 80% (mean 58.1%), which was much greater than seen in persons with no RAST, score 0. Patients with positive bronchial inhalation tests, showed 40 to 80% (mean 57.8%) reactive basophils, whereas persons with a negative bronchial challenge test showed a range of reactive basophils from 0 to 50% (mean 28.9%). The difference in percentage of reactive basophils between the positive and negative groups of persons tested by bronchial inhalation was statistically significant.

Platelet function: aggregation by PAF or sequestration in lung is not modified during immediate or late allergen-induced bronchospasm in man.

Among the mediators involved in the pathophysiologic mechanisms that underly the reactions of the acute and delayed phases of bronchospasm induced by allergens in man, platelet-activating factor (PAF) could play an important role, in particular by its effects on platelets. In animals, inhalation or injection of PAF causes a platelet-dependent bronchoconstriction that is blocked by prior administration of an antiplatelet antiserum and accompanied by platelet accumulation in the pulmonary vessels. In man, inhalation of PAF causes a bronchospasm and induces a bronchial hyperreactivity. Abnormalities of platelet aggregation and the secretion into plasma of platelet factor 4 and beta-thromboglobulin have been described in patients with asthma during induced bronchospasm. Platelet functions have been studied in 15 patients with asthma before and after allergen bronchial provocation tests. There was no difference between platelet counts, plasma concentrations of platelet factor 4 and beta-thromboglobulin, and platelet aggregation induced by several agonists (adrenaline, arachidonic acid, or PAF) before and immediately after the allergen bronchial provocation test. There was no platelet pulmonary sequestration as studied with 111Indium-labeled platelets during 24 hours after the antigen challenge, and the life span of circulating platelets was normal. Our results do not support an important direct role for PAF in the pathophysiology of asthma. It is still possible that the current methodology is too insensitive to detect amounts of PAF in the circulation or that PAF is acting locally.

Pulmonary outcome in adolescents of extreme preterm birth: a regional cohort study.

AIMS: The pulmonary outcome of extreme prematurity remains to be established in adults. We determined respiratory health and lung function status in a population-based, complete cohort of young preterms approaching adulthood. METHODS: Forty-six preterms with gestational age < or = 28 wk or birthweight < or = 1000 g, born between 1982 and 1985, were compared to the temporally nearest term-born subject of equal gender. Spirometry, plethysmography, reversibility test to salbutamol and methacholine bronchial provocation test were performed. Neonatal data were obtained from hospital records and current symptoms from validated questionnaires. RESULTS: When entering the study at a mean age of 17.7 (SD: 1.2) y, a doctor's diagnosis of asthma and use of asthma inhalers were significantly more prevalent among preterms than controls (one asthmatic control compared to nine preterms, all but one using asthma inhalers). Peak expiratory flow (PEF) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) were decreased and the discrepancies relative to controls increased parallel to increased severity of neonatal lung disease. Parameters of increased neonatal oxygen exposure significantly predicted FEV1. Adjusted for height, gender and age, FEV1 was reduced by a mean of 580 ml/s in subjects with a history of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Fifty-six percent of preterms had a positive methacholine provocation test compared to 26% of controls. CONCLUSION: A substantially decreased FEV1, increased bronchial hyperresponsiveness and a number of established risk factors for steeper age-related decline in lung function were observed in preterms. A potential for early onset chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is present in subsets of this group.

Occupational asthma and immunologic responses induced by inhaled carmine among employees at a factory making natural dyes.

Carmine is a natural red dye widely used as a food coloring agent and for cosmetic manufacture. It is extracted from the dried females of the insect Dactylopius coccus var. Costa (cochineal). Although it has been reported that inhalation of carmine may give rise to occupational asthma and extrinsic allergic alveolitis, there is little evidence of its immunogenic capacity. We studied nine current employees at a factory making natural dyes and one former employee who had left this plant after occupational asthma developed. A current employee had work-related symptoms of rhinitis and asthma that were confirmed by bronchial provocation tests, and another worker had rhinitis. Immunologic sensitization to carmine and cochineal was evaluated by means of skin testing and determination of serum-specific IgE and IgG subclass antibodies by RAST and ELISA, respectively. The specificity of the RAST assay was investigated by RAST inhibition with different fractions of carmine. The three workers with respiratory symptoms had positive skin prick test reactions to both carmine and cochineal. An immediate response to the bronchial provocation test with carmine and cochineal was observed in the current employee with asthma. Specific IgE antibodies against carmine and cochineal were found only in this worker. RAST inhibition studies indicated that the main allergen had a molecular weight between 10 and 30 kd. Specific IgG antibodies against carmine and cochineal, mainly the subclasses IgG1, IgG3, and IgG4, were found in the 10 subjects surveyed. These findings suggest that carmine may induce immunologic responses, most likely IgE mediated in workers with symptoms of occupational asthma.

Occupational asthma in a hairdressing salon.

Occupational asthma among hairdressers has been recognised for some years and cases of work related asthma due to hair bleaches containing persulphates and hair dyes have been reported. The extent of the disease among hairdressers remains unknown. An investigation was carried out on an entire hairdressing salon, which specialised in hair bleaching and colouring and which employed 23 staff. On the basis of history and specific and non-specific bronchial provocation testing, four out of 23 staff were found to have occupational asthma due to the persulphate salts contained in hair bleaches. Only one of these had a positive skinprick test response to persulphate salts. Tests for non-specific bronchial reactivity to histamine in this work force were more sensitive for the diagnosis of asthma than simple lung function tests or recordings of peak flow rates performed four times daily for three weeks. The response to these agents was studied in greater detail by specific bronchial provocation tests in 14 members of the salon as well as one hairdresser from elsewhere with occupational asthma, three individuals with non-occupational asthma, and four normal subjects. Only those with a history of work related asthma and bronchial hyperreactivity responded positively, confirming that the response to bleach powders was specific. Studies of pulmonary mechanics after challenge showed that the response arose from changes in airway calibre not lung volumes. Measurement of neutrophil chemotactic activity after challenge showed significant rises in those affected, suggesting that mast cells may play a part in the pathogenesis of occupational asthma due to persulphates.

Occupational asthma due to glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde in endoscopy and x ray departments.

BACKGROUND: Glutaraldehyde is the best disinfectant for fibreoptic endoscopes. It is also used in the processing of x ray films. A number of studies have reported eye, nose, and respiratory symptoms in exposed workers. Three individual case reports of occupational asthma in endoscopy workers and a radiographer have also been published. We describe a further seven cases of occupational asthma due to glutaraldehyde in endoscopy and x ray departments, together with exposure levels measured during the challenge tests and in 19 endoscopy and x ray departments in the region. METHODS: Eight workers were referred for investigation of suspected occupational asthma following direct or indirect exposure to glutaraldehyde at work. They were investigated by serial measurements of peak expiratory flow (PEF) and specific bronchial provocation tests. Glutaraldehyde levels were measured using personal and static short and longer term air samples during the challenge tests and in 13 endoscopy units and six x ray darkrooms in the region where concern about glutaraldehyde exposure had been expressed. Three of the workers investigated with occupational asthma came from departments where glutaraldehyde air measurements had been made; the others came from other hospitals or departments. RESULTS: The diagnosis of occupational asthma was confirmed in seven workers, all of whom had PEF records suggestive of occupational asthma and positive specific bronchial challenge tests to glutaraldehyde. Bronchial provocation testing was negative in one worker who was no longer exposed and who had a less clearcut history of occupational asthma. Three workers also had a positive specific bronchial challenge to formaldehyde. The mean level of glutaraldehyde in air during the challenge tests was 0.068 mg/m3, about one tenth of the short term occupational exposure standard of 0.7 mg/m3. The levels obtained in the challenge chamber were similar to those measured in 13 endoscopy suites and six x ray darkrooms where median short term levels were 0.16 mg/m3 during decantation in endoscopy suites and < 0.009 mg/m3 in darkrooms. CONCLUSIONS: Glutaraldehyde can cause occupational asthma. The exposure levels measured in the workplace suggest that sensitisation may occur at levels below the current occupational exposure standard.

Occupational asthma in hairdressers: results of inhalation tests with bleaching powder.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To analyze the extent to which the clinical diagnosis of bleach-induced asthma can be confirmed by laboratory tests and to determine the role of work-related exposure to bleaching powder in a group of hairdressers with respiratory complaints. METHODS: The study population consisted of 55 female hairdressers who had regular contact with various hair products and a clinical history of job-related rhinitic and/or asthmatic symptoms. We divided the individuals into two groups: group I, with asthmatic symptoms (n = 38), and group II, without asthmatic symptoms (control group, n = 17). All subjects underwent immunological, pulmonary-function, and nonspecific bronchial provocation tests, and 46 study participants were subjected to a standardized bleaching-powder test in a designated chamber. RESULTS: There were 13 positive responses to bleaching powder in the skin test, and 32 individuals showed positive bronchial responsiveness to acetylcholine; positive responses to the challenge with bleaching powder occurred in 9 women (22% of those tested). None of the women in group II reacted to bleaching powder. There was no significant difference between persons with a positive or a negative bronchial provocation test with regard to the evaluated parameters. CONCLUSIONS: In the diagnostic workup of hairdressers with work-related respiratory symptoms, bleaching powder is one of the products that need to be tested. As not every patient with an asthmatic response to bleaching powder shows a positive response to the acetylcholine challenge test, in doubtful cases a specific exposure test may be recommendable.

Predictive value of airway resistance in patients affected with pollen rhinitis.

We selected 38 symptomatic pollen-sensitive rhinitic patients without bronchial pathology and with normal pulmonary functional study (volume flow curve). A control group consisting of 10 individuals was studied adjacently. The study was performed within the pollen season. The determination of Raw value was carried out through increasing doses of histamine challenge employing the Apta-Jaeger apparatus. The results were expressed in PC20 wherein 26% of the pollen-affected patients presented bronchial hyperreactivity (positive histamine bronchial provocation test). In this group the values of basal Raw were found to be increased with respect to the control group (p less than 0.025) and pollen-sensitive patients with negative histamine bronchial provocation test (p less than 0.01). On the other hand, the pollen-sensitive group with negative response to histamine bronchial challenge presented Raw values which were similar to the control group.

[Relationship between levels of intercellular adhesion molecule-1, interleukin-6 and airway hyperresponsiveness in patients with allergic rhinitis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between levels of intercellular adhesion molecule-1, interleukin-6 and airway hyperresponsiveness in patients with allergic rhinitis. METHODS: Fifty-four patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and 20 controls were included in the study. The levels of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in nasal lavage fluid, gathered 1 hour after specific allergen nasal provocation test (SANPT), were detected by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. The pulmonary function (FEV1) and nonspecific bronchial provocation test were measured in 54 patients with AR, 36 patients with AR and bronchial asthma (BA) and 20 controls. At the same time, the correlation between levels of ICAM-1 and IL-6 in nasal lavage fluid and pulmonary function (FEV1) was studied. RESULTS: The levels of ICAM-1 and IL-6 in nasal lavage fluid from patients with AR were (272.75 +/- 32.25) pg/ml and (52.11 +/- 16.54) pg/ml, significantly higher than those the controls, which were (158.82 +/- 33.88) pg/ml and (25.64 +/- 10.14) pg/ml (P < 0.01). The pulmonary function (FEV1) in patients with AR and BA was (78.82 +/- 7.41)%. It was obviously lower than that in patients with AR [(83.90 +/- 4.87)%], much lower than that in normal controls [(90.25 +/- 4.69)%]. The difference among them was significant. In patients with AR, the positive percentage of bronchial provocation test was 64.81%, in patients with AR and BA, it was 83.33% in normal controls, it was 0. The differences among them had very significant meaning. The levels of ICAM-1 and IL-6 in nasal provocation fluid had closely negative correlation with pulmonary function (FEV1), r = -0.7071, -0.6248, P < 0.01. CONCLUSIONS: The close correlation was observed in upper and lower airway for allergic inflammation. The pulmonary function of patients with AR was lower, and 64. 8% of them had airway hyperresponsiveness, so that they had the potent possibility to have bronchial asthma.

Efficacy of leukotriene receptor antagonist in bronchial hyperresponsiveness and hypersensitivity to analgesic in aspirin-intolerant asthma.

BACKGROUND: Albeit its exact pathogenesis is still ambiguous; aspirin-intolerant asthma is one of several types of asthma for which antileukotriene therapy is useful, because it is widely accepted that bronchial over-production of leukotrienes may be involved in its pathogenesis. Pranlukast (8-[p-(4-phenylbutyloxy) benzol] amino-2-(tetrazol-5-yl)-4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran hemihydrate), a selective cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist, is now widely used in the treatment of asthma. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to investigate the protective effect of pranlukast on airway sensitivity to sulpyrine provocation testing, bronchial responsiveness to methacholine provocation testing, and to investigate whether this protective activity is associated with a reduction in aspirin-induced excretion of urinary LTE4 (uLTE4), a marker of the cysteinyl leukotriene (LT) overproduction that participates in the pathogenesis of aspirin-induced asthma. METHODS: We assessed the effects of pretreatment with pranlukast on bronchoconstriction precipitated by inhalation of methacholine and sulpyrine in 16 adult patients with mild or moderate aspirin-intolerant asthma; those who were in stable clinical condition and were hypersensitive to sulpyrine provocation testing were allocated to this study. A double-blind, randomized, crossover design was used. uLTE4 was measured using combined reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (rp-HPLC)/enzyme immunoassay. RESULTS: Pranlukast protected against analgesic-induced bronchoconstriction through mechanisms that were not related to the bronchodilator property, but were related to the improvement both of bronchial hyperresponsiveness and hypersensitivity to analgesic (P < 0.005 and P < 0.0001). Pranlukast showed little effect on excretion of uLTE4. CONCLUSION: These results support the hypothesis that cysteinyl leukotriene is one of the most important components in the pathogenesis of aspirin-intolerant asthma. Pranlukast improves not only hypersensitivity to analgesic, but also bronchial hyperresponsiveness in aspirin-intolerant asthma. It is also possible that pranlukast has another anti-asthmatic effect besides that of a leukotriene receptor antagonist.

Housewives with raw potato-induced bronchial asthma.

Allergy to white potato has rarely been described. We report two cases of atopic patients, housewives, in whom peeling raw potatoes precipitated rhinoconjunctivitis and asthmatic attacks, and, in one of them, contact urticaria. Type I hypersensitivity to raw potato antigens was demonstrated by means of immediate skin test reactivity, specific IgE determination by RAST, basophil degranulation, histamine release test and an immediate bronchial provocation test response to raw potato extract. The controls did not react to any of these tests. Potato allergenic constituent is currently being investigated but, as far as we know, it is heat-labile and has an MW of more than 10 Kd.

A 1-year, placebo-controlled, double-blind house-dust-mite immunotherapy study in asthmatic adults.

Thirty-one adult patients with asthma caused by house-dust mites (HDM) were included in this placebo-controlled, double-blind study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of specific immunotherapy (SIT) with biologically standardized extracts of HDM. The specific diagnosis was confirmed by skin prick tests, specific IgE, and bronchial provocation tests with HDM allergens. The patients were randomized to receive active treatment with extracts of either Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dpt) or D. farinae (Dfa) (Alutard SQ, ALK, Denmark) or placebo injections. Twenty-three patients completed the study. After 1 year of treatment, we found a clinically important and significant reduction in both asthma medicine consumption (inhaled steroids 38% and beta 2-agonists 46%) and symptom score (57%) in the actively treated group, but not the placebo group. These findings were confirmed by a significant decrease in skin and bronchial sensitivity to HDM in the active group. Additionally, there was a significant difference in the patients' scores for effect in favor of the actively treated group. Total IgE and specific IgE to HDM showed no significant changes before and after treatment for either group. Spirometric lung-function measurements showed a significant increase in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) from 85% before to 89% of predicted values after treatment for the actively treated group. Peak-flow measurements at home showed no significant changes during the study. It is concluded that allergen SIT is an effective treatment in adult patients suffering from asthma due to HDM.
